Samuel's grip was shockingly strong—no matter how hard I struggled, he wouldn't budge, dragging me relentlessly toward—
"Can't you hear Natalie saying she doesn't want to?"
Matthew finally snapped. Normally so composed, he couldn't stand seeing me treated this way. Before I knew it, he was trading punches with Samuel.
This wasn't some halfhearted scuffle. Both men went all in, each hit landing harder than the last as they grappled for dominance.
When things escalated beyond control, hotel staff had no choice but to call the cops.
Two officers arrived quickly. Along with some bystanders, they barely managed to pull Samuel and Matthew apart. After two hours of giving my statement, I walked out behind Matthew.
Since it was just a mutual fight without serious consequences—and both being first-time offenders—the cops let them off with warnings.
To prevent round two, Samuel got held back at the station for an extra thirty minutes after we left.
"I lost my cool back there," Matthew apologized, running a hand through his disheveled hair. "I'm sorry, Natalie."
I shook my head. "Thank you, actually. I really appreciate you stepping in."
Seeing I wasn't angry, Matthew visibly relaxed. He drove me home safely, but hesitated before leaving. "Can I... keep seeing you?" he asked cautiously. "You were my first crush, but today proved it's more than that. You're even more incredible than I remembered."
Facing his earnest confession, I paused. "I need time to sort things out. But thanks for tonight, Matthew."
Guilt prickled at me—until now, I'd only considered him as decent company to pass the time with.
Matthew read me perfectly. With an understanding smile, he said, "Your pace, always. It's getting chilly—head inside. Goodnight, Natalie."
Home at last, I chugged a full glass of ice water straight from the fridge. The brain-freeze shock made me laugh despite myself.
Then my phone buzzed—a WhatsApp request from "Richard Lee." The name took me a second to place.
"Oh, you've got to be kidding me." I video-called Sarah immediately.
Sure enough, she'd given him my contact. "Natalie, he's a rising star now! Not just that theater kid from college. When he asked, how could I say no?"
"You absolutely got bribed. Spill it—what'd he promise you?"
"Okay fine, some impossible-to-get concert tickets! Look, if you're not interested, just ghost him in a few days."
Before I could tear into her for this betrayal, Richard messaged: [Hey Natalie—free this weekend? Still owe you those dinners.]
