His voice gradually softened as my words sank in, thick with desperate pleading.
"I don't want a divorce, Natalie. I know I messed up. Just give me one more chance? I realized... I've always loved you deeply."
I studied him with amused detachment.
"Plenty of people love me, Samuel. Quit acting like a child. Facing reality will be better for both of us."
Of course I knew why he'd come crawling back.
Just like he knew exactly what it meant when I started being seen with other men.
But logic and emotion rarely align. Samuel had spent a full week holed up in some hotel, torturing himself over how I could coldly abort our daughter without telling him - then start dating Matthew within days, letting another man's hand linger on my waist at our reunion like it belonged there.
"Natalie, did you ever love me at all? Or did you just marry me out of habit?" When I stayed silent, Samuel's mouth twisted bitterly before he buried his face in shaking hands.
"I don't get it. One month. Just one fucking month! You erased a decade of my devotion like it meant nothing. How could you? Were we just some joke to you?"
"Our ten years weren't a joke. I don't regret marrying you."
I crouched before him, tilting my head playfully as I pried his damp hands away to meet his bloodshot eyes. My sweetest smile bloomed.
"Feel better now, Samuel? Stop the waterworks. It's just divorce - not the end of the world. You've still got your career, your doting parents... oh, and all those women panting after you. Really, you're quite the catch."
Sugarcoated knives cut deepest.
My divorce-motivated kindness left him shell-shocked.
"Natalie... do you hate me that much?"
"Don't flatter yourself. You're not even worth hating."
No love. No hate.
Samuel was already part of my past.
When his phone rang with Emily's name flashing, I moved to give him privacy - but he grabbed my wrist, sliding off the couch to his knees as he answered.
Emily's hysterical sobs poured through the speaker, begging him to come to campus or she'd jump from the highest building. Samuel's response was glacial:
"I'm back with my wife. Live or die - that's your choice."
He hung up, wrapping around my waist from behind. Soon I felt hot tears soaking through my blouse as he trembled against me.
"Natalie, I've loved you since we were kids. Twenty years..."
"You'll never know how it destroyed me when I found out about our daughter."
"Remember what you promised? Samuel Lewis is Natalie Moore's little brother - you're my safe place."
"You don't get to throw me away now."
I turned and kicked him flat on his back.
My heel pressed over his heart, grinding deliberately as I looked down with a cold smirk.
"You're not my only little brother. The problem was always you just... not being good enough. Can't blame anyone but yourself."
