The person I left behind put out the fire at the crucial moment.
From the outside, it looked almost the same as before, except for the sudden thick smoke seeping through the window frames and the black marks on half the wall.
But our master bedroom was now nothing but a burnt-out shell.
I looked at the photos my team sent me and took a sip of champagne.
My phone kept buzzing nonstop—Ryan calling over and over again.
The guy who was usually so composed had apparently lost his mind.
I finally answered. His voice was shaking.
"Elena, no matter what, you shouldn't have burned down our home. Can't you just listen to my explanation? You're a grown woman—can't you control your emotions?"
I let out a cold laugh.
"Have you signed the divorce papers yet? If not, we're going to court."
The man who'd just been lecturing me about emotional stability completely snapped.
"You know I could have you arrested for arson, right?"
Like I'd heard the funniest joke ever, I snorted.
"Go ahead and try."
"I didn't threaten public safety, I didn't destroy anyone else's property, and it's my house. I accidentally burned one room. What's the problem?"
Long silence on his end, then a low, furious growl.
"You're absolutely insane."
He hung up, and I immediately blocked his number.
What I didn't expect was to run into him again at the hospital during my follow-up appointment.
When my name was called, I walked into the examination room and came face-to-face with two familiar figures.
The woman had her arm linked through the man's, and he was holding what looked like test results, his brow still furrowed with worry.
When he saw me, his expression went slack.
This time Maria didn't let go of his arm like before—instead, she held on even tighter.
"You—what are you doing here?"
I looked them both up and down slowly, not particularly surprised.
"Pregnant?"
Ryan immediately pulled his arm away from Maria, his face going pale.
He was about to deny it when Maria's defiant attitude kicked in.
"Yeah, I'm pregnant. So what?"
"You're not the only woman in the world who can give the Thompson family children. If you want to threaten Blake with a baby, I'll eliminate that threat for you."
I was surprised by her boldness and couldn't help but smile.
The woman had deliberately put on bright red lipstick today—if you ignored how dry and cracked her lips were, she looked pretty fierce.
I turned to the man beside me with a mocking smile.
"Ryan, you really couldn't control yourself, huh? Didn't even have time to use protection?"
Ryan's face went from white to green, and after a long pause he finally managed to say:
"I won't keep the baby. Don't worry."
That set Maria off completely. She stared at him in disbelief.
"Ryan, what are you saying? This is our child! At my age, getting pregnant isn't easy, and now you want me to have an abortion?"
"You gonna let this bitch destroy you? I'm not having it."
Ryan acted like he hadn't heard her, his eyes locked on me.
"Elena, this was just an accident. I never meant for—"
"An accident? You've got to be kidding me."
"With your history together, shouldn't she have gotten pregnant back when you were hooking up in the dorms?"
All the noise around us faded into silence.
I watched their expressions change and suddenly laughed until tears came out.
"Wait, seriously?"
"So she did get pregnant back then?"
Ryan's pressed lips and the way he couldn't meet my eyes told me everything.
Fighting through the pain tearing at my chest, I started clapping sarcastically.
"Ryan Thompson, you're truly a magnificent bastard."
My name echoed through the hallway over and over as the man finally seemed to register what was happening, his gaze dropping to my flat stomach.
"Elena... is our baby okay?"
"The baby's gone."
The man's face went completely pale, and seeing my silence, he forced out a strained smile.
"Elena, that's not a funny joke."
I pushed open the examination room door and said quietly, "I don't think our relationship is close enough for jokes."
I went inside, and when Ryan tried to follow me, the doctor stopped him.
"Family members of other patients need to wait outside!"
As the door closed, I saw Ryan standing there, still tall and imposing but somehow diminished, looking lost and helpless.
Like a child who'd done something terrible.
But I felt no pity for him.
People who are rotten to the core never deserve forgiveness.
