The litigation was canceled.
Because Ryan signed the divorce agreement I'd given him.
The law office's AC was cranked up high, and the man sitting across from me was so disheveled I barely recognized him.
Stubble, dark circles under his eyes, messy hair.
He reeked of alcohol.
The lawyer sat between us, going through the final property division details.
The terms were actually simple—I took back what was originally mine, while he kept his meager savings and that failing company.
After the lawyer finished reading everything, he looked at me to see if I had any other demands.
I glanced at the broken man across from me.
Then signed my name.
Ryan's hand shook as he held the pen. Maybe remembering better times, his eyes welled up, and after a long pause, his voice came out strained.
"That house—could I buy it from you? It holds all our memories. We put our hearts into decorating it together. I don't want to—"
"No."
Precisely because that house held memories of Ryan and me, it couldn't be allowed to continue existing.
I wanted to completely erase this chapter that had become nothing but a shame to me.
Finally, the man signed his name with trembling hands.
The lawyer efficiently gathered all the documents, and I stood up to leave.
Ryan clearly wanted to say more, but I didn't give him the chance.
Just as I was getting in my car, I heard him call out from behind me.
"Elena, whether you believe it or not, I still love you."
I paused for a moment, then let out a bitter laugh.
I told my driver, "To the airport."
My best friend had arranged an overseas trip for me, and I gladly accepted.
My days abroad were blissfully peaceful—shopping, lounging on cruise ships, watching the ocean and soaking up the sun.
Occasionally I'd hear news from back home.
Ryan's company was facing its biggest crisis since startup, with cash flow problems forcing massive layoffs.
Maria had successfully divorced her husband, with custody going to her.
But no one expected that when she showed up at Ryan's place with the kid on day one, she'd be greeted with a wine bottle to the head.
She lost the baby on the spot.
Maria called the police and demanded an astronomical settlement.
But Ryan wasn't about to roll over—within days, he'd run Maria out of town.
The whole turn of events happened so fast it surprised even me.
I'd thought he had at least some feelings for her.
But none of it was my problem anymore.
At the end of the month, I posted a photo of my divorce decree on Instagram to an outpouring of congratulations.
At that moment, I was on a cruise ship on the other side of the world, watching a friend propose to his girlfriend.
Million-dollar fireworks, lavish feast, mountains of flowers and a diamond the size of a pigeon's egg.
Everything was beautiful as a fairy tale.
I smiled genuinely and raised my glass, toasting their eternal happiness.
And toasting myself—to regaining the ability to create my own happiness.
