Mom died when I was young. Dad only had me. And I wasted all my time chasing Alex.
The noise from next door went on forever. Morning till afternoon. The whole damn house could hear them.
I sat in the dining room, mechanically shoving food dowm.
They finally came downstairs when I was almost done.
Chloe's legs looked wobbly, but she had that post-sex glow and shy smile.
I put down my fork to leave.
"What, feeling guilty about your little stunt?"
Alex grabbed my arm.
He genuinely believed I drugged him.
That's how low he thought of me.
I forced a polite smile.
"Nope. Just finished eating. Didn't want to disturb you two."
Alex's expression darkened.
"You know how ugly you look when you're being fake like this?"
Chloe was giving me the same disgusted look.
I gripped the tablecloth tighter. He never bothered hiding how much he hated me.
"Mrs. Rodriguez, make an extra portion from now on. Chloe's moving in."
Mrs. Rodriguez shot me a worried look.
This was my house. Alex only lived here because of me.
Now he wanted to move his girlfriend in?
"Chloe's the lady of the house now. You should call her sister-in-law."
Chloe lifted her chin smugly.
My throat felt tight.
"My parents only had me. No brother, no sister-in-law."
Alex's expression turned ice cold.
Cause I used to tell people he was my brother to keep other girls away.
My phone buzzed. The family lawyer.
I grabbed it and headed upstairs.
"Alex, does Evelyn hate me? I'm sorry you have to deal with her attitude because of me."
"Not your fault, babe. I spoiled her rotten."
Right before I got to my room, I glanced back and met Alex's cold stare.
"Miss Steven, the paperwork's been submitted. VIP processing, so your visa should come through in two days."
"Thank you so much."
Two days and I'm gone.
I scanned my room one last time.
Ten years I'd been stuck in this place, all because I wanted to be near Alex.
"Evie, I'm gonna bust my ass to make your dad proud. I'll work at the company, take care of you, make sure you live like a princess forever."
ack in college, Alex was dirt poor but his eyes... God, when he talked about our future, he was the most beautiful thing I'd ever seen.
My door suddenly flew open.
Alex.
"Stay out."
"What's your problem now? Mad about me and Chloe?"
He walked in anyway.
"What you two do is none of my business."
I kept packing with my back to him.
"Right, you're just throwing a tantrum. Acting like you don't even know me."
"Who called you?"
He didn't even like me, but he still had to control everything I did.
Years of this shit, Alex never let me talk to any guys.
"Not your concern. I can talk to whoever the hell I want."
His jaw tightened.
"Evelyn, cut the crap. I know you're still hung up on me. I'm with Chloe now. You could chase me for another decade and it's never gonna happen."
"Thank fuck you bailed this morning. Just thinking about touching you makes my skin crawl. Total boner killer."
My hands froze over the clothes.
I didn't get why he had to be so cruel.
So what if I liked him? Was that some unforgivable sin?
Why did I have to put up with this humiliation?
"Get out. Now."
My voice was shaking.
When he didn't budge, I shoved him toward the door.
Right before I slammed it shut, Alex's eyes went cold.
"Evie, you better be nice to Chloe."
"Treat her like family, or we're done. Forever."
