ANITA HAD ALWAYS LOVED AND HATED THE MOVIE CINDERELLA. SHE HATED IT SINCE SHE WAS BASICALLY LIVING IN THE FAIRYTALE - JUST WITH A FEW DIFFERENCES. But she also loved it since at the end everything was okay. The girl found her prince and escaped her family
But Anita knew that was unlikely for her
"ANITA GET DOWN HERE!" The brunette woke up from her sleep from the sound of her stepmother shouting through the intercom. The noise was deafening to her ears so early in the morning so young girl groaned and lifted her head up, her messy hair sticking up in multiple directions
She moved her hand over and pressed a button on the device
"Coming" she called down
"NOW!" She grunted at the noise and unwillingly pulled the covers off herself to started to get ready for the day
Once she was ready she finally rushed downstairs ready for the day she saw her stepmother sitting at the kitchen table, tapping her foot impatiently on the floor
"What have you been doing? You overslept" Anita's eyes widened as she heard her words. She hadn't had time to look at a clock since she woke up and she definitely didn't know she was late for school
"Overslept!?" She quickly turned around, her eyes meeting the clock
"Oh my gosh! I'm gonna be late" she quickly went to pick up her school bag
"Oh no you don't. I still need breakfast" Anita stopped moving and turned open mouthed to Prism
"Prism, I really need to go to school. I'll get an hour detention if I don't make it to school on time"
"That's not my problem, you shouldn't have overslept-"
"I overslept because I was working at the diner. You told me I had to take the late shift-" Anita cut her off which made Prism grit her teeth in anger
"Don't interrupt me!" The woman shouted, standing up out of her chair which loudly squeaked at the abrupt action. She stalked forward whilst the younger girl moved back
"You have to work if you want to live in this house! Otherwise you can leave!" Anita looked down at the floor and nodded submitting to the woman who has held power over her for the past 5 years
"Good. Now make me breakfast. Then you can go to school"
Anita had missed the first bell after having to cook breakfast for her stepmother so she was currently running through the halls of the school to try and make it to her class before the second bell rang
She thought she would probably make it, just about, with seconds to spare but that was thrown out of the window when she bumped into someone
Anita dropped to the floor whislt the other person she bumped into stood up straight and was mostly unaffected by the force. Anita looked up in shock, her eyes slightly widening when she realised who it was she had hit
"Oh my gosh I'm so sorry" she muttered picking her things up off the floor
"Are you alright?" The quarterback, Ryder questioned Anita. Ryder was the most popular guy in the school. He was not only the quarterback of the football team but he had also had a few musical albums released which Anita and everyone else loved. She had listened to a few of his songs and they were amazing
He was thinking of helping her pick up her books from the floor but with the speed she was moving in by the time he would've bent down she would've been finished
She nodded, and stood up quickly and embarrassed
"Yes- I'm good. I'm so sorry for bumping into you. I wasn't looking where I was going and-" she sighed
"I'm sorry" the boy in front of her let off a small chuckle whilst he shook his head
"It's alright, are you okay? You took quite the fall" she smiled sheepishly and nodded
"Just supporting a concussion" she muttered which caused them both to laugh. He looked down at her once he calmed down only then taking in her features. She was beautiful, he realised. He knew who she was. Anita miller. He has had his eye on her since 6th grade when she handed him a pencil when he didn't have one. He found her stunning then, and even more beautiful now
But he wasn't the only one who knew about her. Anita was known around the school. She wasn't popular or anything but if she walked down the hall people would know who she is
The bell rang, making the girl in front of him jump and her eyes widened
"I'm guessing you're late" he said with a small smile and she nodded mutely still looking stunned from the fact she was late
"Aren't you?" She muttered and he shook her head
"Nah. I've got football training in 5. My first period starts after" she nodded and he realised she kept her eyes trained on the floor for most of their conversation. It made him eager to see her eyes again
"Well I better go" she muttered and he nodded moving to the side slightly so she could walk past. She sent him one last small smile before she speed walked to the class she was now late to. But for some reason she didn't seem to care that much anymore
Ryder stood in his place for a moment but as he went to walk he saw something on the floor
He knelt down and picked it up realising it was the girl he had just spoke to's homework
"Hey- wait!" He shouted as he turned around, ready to give it to her but once he did he realised she was already gone
It was lunch time and Anita was stressing to her 2 friends about how she had a detention for being late. She was a worried, they both knew. But they also knew with the family she lives with, she had to be. The type of punishments they've heard from Anita was insane
"Prism is going to be so mad" she said putting her head in her hands, the school food completely disregarded on her plate which was in the middle of the table whislt adam ate some of the fruit off
"But it was her fault in the first place" Adam pointed out. Anita had met both Adam and alexis in third grade and had been inseparable ever since. But after the death of Anita's father, her friends had started to wonder why she couldn't hang out with them anymore
She continued to lie but they caught up to her at one point and the pair realised which meant Anita had to come clean
They were appalled that the mayor of their town was acting so inhumanly to her stepdaughter and they wanted to help her get out of it. But after weeks and weeks of trying to find ways they came out empty handed
"I know" Anita sighed
"But it's okay. I'll get some homework done in detention then I won't have to do it at work. Which means I won't have to have a break and I'll get to go home earlier" she smiled in triumph and looked over to her friends but they weren't looking in her direction.
She frowned once she also realised that the cafeteria had become silent in only a few seconds and once she looked around she noticed why
Anita and her friends usually sat at the far back tables since she had always felt uncomfortable being in the middle of the room - and her friends respected that- so when Ryder started walking in their direction she knew it wasn't normal
Anita didn't know if he was definately going in their exact direction since there was others around but the fact that his eyes met hers once she saw him was a bit of confirmation
"Uh- Anita? Why is Ryder coming over here?" Alexis whisper yelled but got a shrug in response by the short girl. Anita had as much of a clue as everyone else
The room was loud enough you could hear a pin drop. It wasn't usual that Ryder would get up from his seat at the lunch table and go to someone else's so everyone kind of made it into a big deal- which it wasn't
Once Ryder reached the table he smiled down at Anita and got one in return from her. Thankfully the talking and whispering had started to pick up so there wasn't an awkward silence they had to worry about filling
He nodded in greeting at both of Anita's friends before his attention was fully directed to her
"You dropped this in the morning" he went into his backpack and pulled out a sheet of paper and then handed it to Anita
"Oh my gosh" she muttered reading over it
"I've been looking for this all morning. I have biology literally next lesson and I would've gotten another detention. Thank you so much"
"2 in one day? Does this happen all the time?" He asked as he leaned on his bag
"Gosh no" she laughed softly
"It's my first one. And I'm not looking for another"
"Lucky I saw your sheet then" she blushed a bright red and turned away from his gaze but nodded anyways
"Yeah, I guess so" he stood up and placed his bag back on his shoulder
"I better go. I just got moved to AP biology. I'll see you there" she nodded and he turned around before making his way back to his usual table. Once Anita's friend had got out of their initial shock they turned to her
Alexis: "Oh my gosh-"
Adam: "Ryder Caddel-"
Alexis: "Just spoke to you" anita looked over with a small smile. They weren't that much caring about the fact he was one of- the most popular guy in school. But the fact that anita has had a crush on Ryder since 6th grade. She even gave him a pencil when he broke his, though she probably would've gave it to anyone who needed it
"Girl- you've been in love with him forever, and you're not even stunned he's talking to you"
"Oh I'm stunned" anita muttered
"But I think I'm having a stroke" she placed her hand on her forehead and pretended to faint on Adams' lap
They all laughed as she got up but that didn't stop the reality of the situation
Anita's life long infatuation with the quarterback of the football team had spoken to her twice in one day
But Anita knew that was unlikely for her
