The next day at school was pretty uneventful. The teacher was talking my ear off about how much school I missed. Not that I cared anyway. The only reason I'm here is because of my mom, she could go to jail If I continue to miss school. I pretty much ignored most of my teachers. They all kept saying the same thing about my tardiness but I could only imagine how Jacob felt.
School was literally his life. He strived to be a scholar and he never missed a day. Well, that was until he got involved with me. It was now lunchtime and I decided to sit outside under this random tree and rest. What they had in the cafeteria shouldn't even be considered food so I didn't even bother eating.
While I was close to dozing off I heard a voice in the distance coming my way.
"Titus? Funny seeing you here." It was Tony. We haven't talked as much as we used to since he moved in with us. Not because I don't like him anymore but I've just been busy.
"Yeah, I decided that I should come back and learn," I say with a smile. He sits down next to me and pulls out two apples and two sandwiches from a brown paper bag. He handed me one of each and bit into his apple.
"So...have you heard about Sora? She's pretty banged up right now." He asks me while taking another bite of his apple and side-eyeing me.
"Yeah, mom told me about it. Since I haven't really been around she called and told me and I went to see her the other day." He nods at me and takes a bite of his sandwich.
"Hm. She was pretty responsive from time to time, did you guys get to talk at all?" He scoots and turns so he's facing me directly and looking me head-on.
"Yeah, I guess. I just told her that we'll find whoever did this to you and hope she got better." I shrug my shoulders and lean back on the tree and look up at the sky as I take a bite of the turkey sandwich.
"You know Titus...me and your sister talked a while back and for some reason, she thinks that all the murders that are happening in this town are related to you."
"Does she now?" I say unbothered. "Now why would she think that?" I asked side-eying him.
"I'm not sure. She said she saw it happen but I didn't believe her at first but for some reason, after she told me that not too long after, she ended up in the hospital."
"So you suspect me also is what you're saying right?" I threw the core of the apple in the nearby field and finished the rest of my sandwich. He didn't say anything after that so I got up and stretched. "Word of advice Tony. Sometimes there are things you should keep out of. You know, curiosity did kill the cat."
He couldn't say anything after that. Not that I wanted him to. I'm just giving him a fair warning so he can take the hints and get on with his life before it's cut short.
"Was that a threat?" He asked while standing up with me and looking me in the eyes. You could see the fear In them but he tried to mask it behind this tough guy front.
"No. It is not a threat. Look, I'm your friend, your family. I'm just trying to look out for you and don't want you to get hurt. The bastard that did all of this will be brought to justice." I pat his shoulder and walk away from him and towards the spot that I knew Jacob would be.
"This is a small town Titus. Pretty soon there will be nowhere for them to hide!" He yells at my back which caused me to stop in my tracks. Turning around I gave him the biggest smile I could give.
"You're right Tony, this is a small town. So small that anything that happens here will go unnoticed by the rest of the world. So small that if there was a tip given to the police about who could be responsible the killer would know exactly who it was and set out to end that person's life. Well, at least that's what I think." With that, I waved at him and continued on my merry way.
A few minutes later, I finally reached where Jacob was. My peaceful lunch was cut short so now I had to cut short someone else's. Jacob was sitting under a pavilion alone like always reading a book. In class, he was more quiet than usual, probably because of what happened yesterday.
Sneaking up behind him I lean close down to his ear and whispered:
"Hey."
He screamed so loud and covered his ear and I couldn't help the laughter that escaped me. His cheeks were red, well as red as they could be for a black male but it was still kinda cute.
"Titus! That wasn't funny. You almost gave me a heart attack." He placed a hand on his chest and tried to slow his heavy breathing.
"Eh, you'll be just fine." Sitting down next to him on the bench I take the book that he's reading and look at the cover. It was called 'Plum Island'. I read this book a year ago for an assignment. If I remember correctly it's something about a detective trying to find out who's behind some murderer in a city or something.
"What're you doing here Titus?" He asked reaching for his book but I pulled back before his hands could reach. "Can I please have my book back?" He huffs.
"Uh, no. I'm here for two things actually. One, we might have a problem with Tony and two I just wanted to bother you." I cheesed.
He ran his hair through his tight curls and let out a deep sigh. His hair was nice though.
"What do you mean?"
"Exactly what I said. He suspects me. I'm not sure what he's gonna do now and I don't want to wait to find out. He's a liability that needs to be dealt with."
"Isn't he like your best friend?"
"And Sora is my sister. Your point is?" I laughed. He pouted and I pinched his bottom lip. "Stop all that pouting."
"Okay. So how are we supposed to go about this?"
"Easy. We'll kill him if we have to." He freezes up at that. Not that it really mattered.
"I don't think I can do that again Titus. It really messes up my mind and I-"
"Well, you have no choice. Listen-" I place my hand on his shoulder and squeeze, hard. "You have no say in this because now you're a part of it. You're a murderer and if we get caught no one will listen to a word you say. If you're lucky you might get the death penalty, but if not you'll spend the rest of your days rotting in prison being someone's bitch. Understand?" I let go of his shoulder and he immediately placed his hand on the hurting area and nodded.
"What about you? You didn't mention yourself in this equation."
"Oh? Who said I'm going with you? Listen, it's either you or me and I chose you. If you play your part the way you're supposed to we'll be fine. Okay?" He nods once again. "You do want to please me right?" He nods and I push up his chin so he can look me in the eye.
"Yes. Yes, I do." I smiled at him and placed a kiss on his lips. It was a short one but he enjoyed it anyway.
"Good. Now, after school, you're coming home with me. Mom wants to see you again. She's making lasagna so it should be edible." He nodded at me and I finally gave him his book back.
"Okay."
