The next day in class Jacob and I sat next to each other. Ever since the whole "altercation" with Riley and his gang no one dared to even talk to him anymore.
"Uh, Titus and Jacob. Looks like you guys are here again. It's been a while. What's your excuse?" Our teacher said mid-lecture.
Jacob didn't know what to say so he stumbled over his words and played with his pencil.
"Well, teacher sir. We had a lot of....personal matters to attend to." I said with a smirk.
"What the hell? You make it sound like you're butt buddies." A random kid in class said in our direction. The whole class busted into laughter like he was at the peak of comedy. Jacob on the other hand got embarrassed and clenched his fist under his desk.
"No. And even if we were Raymond why is that any of your business? Say something else and your teeth will be at the back of your throat before you can get another word in." The class went quiet after that and waited in intense silence. Raymond didn't know what to say so he just huffed and face the front of the class again but not before I blew a kiss in his direction.
"Mr. Jones! Watch what you say in my class boy." The teacher yelled at me while pushing his glasses upon his face. Raising both of my hands up in mock surrender and let out a laugh.
"Okay teach. But, tell your student to watch his mouth." Jacob was still sitting as still as a rock now clenching on his pencil trying to copy the notes on the board. placing my hand on his lap I gave him a reassuring squeeze on his thigh. He let out a breath and smiled at me.
"Now as I was saying-" he was cut off by the sound of the school bell dismissing us to our next class. We packed up our things and walked out while the teacher kept trying to tell us about the homework for tonight.
"Well, I'm off to bio. I'll see you later?" I nodded at him. "Oh and before we take any drastic measures I think you should talk to Tony again maybe-"
"Jacob Welshman to the principal office. Jacob Welshman. Principal's office now." The intercom blasted. This was new because Jacob was never once called to the principal's office for any reason. He looked nervous and I for one was curious.
"What do you think it's for?" I asked while I followed him down the hallway and to the office.
"I have no idea." He gripped the straps of backpack and did a little jump as he adjusted his straps. You could tell he was nervous. From the small movements of his hands and constant fidgeting.
When we made it to the front office there was a cop and a man in a suit waiting for us and accompanying them was the principal. Jacob froze in his tracks and his breathing started to pick up. The officers have yet to notice us so I put my hands on his shoulder.
"Listen. Calm the hell down and take a deep breath." I slowed my breathing down and encouraged him to copy me and he did. "Just keep your cool and follow my lead. I'll be with you so there's no way you should fuck the both of us over." He nodded his head and I squeezed his shoulder again. We walked closer to the desk and Jacob made his presence known.
"Um, I was called here?" It was more of a question than a statement.
"Oh yes, Jacob Welshman. We have things to talk about." She looked over towards me and sized me. "And you are?"
"I'm Titus Jones ma'am. I'm here to accompany Jacob. He's nervous since he has never been called here." I smile.
"And what exactly is your relationship with Mr. Welshman? As you can see this is a very serious matter-" she gestures to the police. "your presence isn't needed."
"Well, I think it is. You see he's my boyfriend and we spend every waking moment with each other." I put my arm around Jacob's shoulder. "Without me by his side, especially at a time like this? He'll completely lose his shit."
"Boyfriend?" He was shocked to hear those words come out of my mouth but I didn't pay attention to him.
"Well-" The one officer in a well-kept suit said to us. "What's the harm in letting him sit in. He might be more helpful." The other officer in a regular blue uniform nodded at him and shrugged his shoulders. I was more surprised that no one questioned the fact that we were in a 'relationship.'
The principle let out a deep sigh and rubbed her eyebrows. "Fine. Do what you want." The officers nodded.
"Well if you boys will just follow me to the station. We have a couple of questions to ask you." We nodded and followed them as they led us to the back of the police car. There were people who were walking to class looking at us.
When we got to the station the officer in the suit led us to a secluded back room. He sat both of us down at a cold metal table. He crossed his arms over his chest and leaned back in the old chair.
"Well, I am Detective Marshall and that gentleman behind you is Officer Peters. We need to ask you, boys, a few questions." I nod and Jacob nodded after me.
"Yeah, no problem anything, " I told him. I had to be the one to keep my cool since I knew that if I didn't Jacob would break and I don't need him doing that. For my sake of course.
"Well-" His partner hands him an envelope and he releases the contents out on the table and Jacob gasps. There were pictures; pictures of the old hag who lived right across the street from Jacob. "This is Marg Evergreen. She lives on the same street as you Mr. Welshman. We got a call from a family member that came to visit her and they found her just like this on her living room placed neatly on her sofa." Jacob swallowed and gave a slow nod.
"Yeah, I see that. But what does this have to do with Jacob?" I press.
"I'm glad you asked. With the recent events going on, Mr. Jones we have the right to be suspicious. Neighbors are pretty far apart in Jacob's neighborhood and it's very confusing to me how a murder took place right across the street from where Jacob lives and yet nothing was reported until now."
Jacob and I both nod. He was still very nervous so I put his hand in mine while under the table and gave a slight squeeze.
"When exactly did this happen?" I question the detective.
"Well, from the looks of it the body's been dead for a week now. So, we can only suspect that it happened on October 17th." He looks between the both of us and leans on the table."Do you boys have any idea what could've happened."
"Well I-"
"No, we don't know what could've happened. Jacob is always at my house." I cut off Jacob.
"Quiet boy." The officer said to me. "I'm talking to Jacob."
Jacob didn't know what to say and started to play with the hem of his shirt while looking down.
"Well, like Titus said, I'm always with him." He mumbled out.
"Well, where were you during the time of the murder?" The detective asked Jacob once again.
"Well, um I was with Titus of course." He looks away from the officer while talking. Bad move.
The officer took a moment to respond and looked at his partner.
"Hm..okay. Anyways, how's your father Jacob?"
"What?" He was surprised that his father was even brought up.
"Yeah, me and him have a bit of history, as of late I haven't heard much from him. Used to see him at the bar almost every other night now no one has seen him. Well, I mean he his a drunk but still. Have any clue as to where he'd be?" Jacob didn't know how to respond, he really sucks at this.
"What does his father have anything to do with the dead lady?" I interjected.
"He doesn't per se but it didn't hurt to ask. Now, do you know Jacob?" He waited a moment until answering the detective.
"No, um I haven't. He's been gone for a while and I don't know where he is." He tells the officer.
He nods his head again. "Now back to the topic of discussion. The woman, your neighbor, Ms. Marg. She was found in her house bloody and dead. Her throat was slit and she was placed on her living room sofa as though nothing was wrong. She has no neighbors except for you and she goes no we're but from the looks of it, it wasn't a forced entry almost as though she let her intruders in." He takes a deep breath. "The bottom of the door was broken off; liked chipped away like she was trying to close it but the person wouldn't let her."
"I'm still trying to figure out why we are here? You're not asking us specific questions regarding why we're here and why you're questioning us." I cut him off. He smiled at me but you could tell that it was fake.
"Yes, right. Well since you're so eager to know-" yeah no shit. "The reason we decided to call you here is that, before her death, Ms. Marg came to the station on October 13th and filled a report on both of you. The main focus of course was Jacob but she also included a young man who for your description right along with him. She reported hearing loud yelling one night and then complete silence and not too long later she reported seeing you boys carrying what looked like a body in trash bags."
Fuck
"A body!? You've got to be kidding. Anyone who knows Jacob knows he wouldn't hurt a fly. That woman was crazy for saying shit like that." I burst out.
"You're probably right. But you look like you'd fit the description of someone who would. Now if he was forced on the other by..let's say someone he's close with-"
"Are you trying to say that I—even though I have nothing to do with this—persuaded Jacob to kill someone. Major bull." I leaned back in my chair, folded my arms over my chest, and looked away.
"Jacob, any thoughts?" His breaths were shallow. They were trying to get him to break. Trying to get him to spill secrets, secrets they didn't know he had but they knew something was there. I had to calm him down one way or another or we would both be in deep shit.
"Babe?" Tell them the truth. Tell them that you don't know anything, hm." I looked him dead in the eye hoping that he caught my drift and lie.
"Babe?" He asked. Confusion was written all over his face.
"Yeah baby, tell them." I grabbed his hand under the table and squeezed his hand. He took a deep breath and looked the officer head-on.
"No sir, whatever she reported wasn't correct. She probably heard my father and I arguing, which is a common occurrence but after that, I called Titus to come and get me. The bags she probably saw us with were my clothes and duffle bags." I nodded at the officer to show that I agreed with what Jacob was saying. Who knew this goody-two-shoes could lie so well. I'm impressed.
"Well officer, we told you what we knew and so can we go?" I asked while standing up and making sure Jacob got up with me.
"Yeah, but one more thing. Why is that, when not even a whole week passes from making the report about you two she comes up missing?" He questions us.
"I have no clue, sir. We didn't even know about the report against us."
"Hm. Just be careful out there boys there's a killer on the loose."You could tell that he didn't mean what he said.
"Yes, we will sir."
When we finally left the station and was inside of my car, Jacob let out a long breath.
"Oh my God! I thought we were done for! Did you know she made a report against us!? Why were they asking so many questions!? And Babe!? We ain't never say that before! And why-"
"Jacob, for one second will you shut the hell up!?" I seethed. He stopped talking and looked at me. "They are onto us and we have to tread lightly now. They didn't believe a word we said, and now they gone be on our asses."
"So what do we do now?" He asks me.
"The only things we can do."
