The second I crossed the threshold, I dipped my head in a quick bow to Tiffany's husband, Vincent, then launched into my rehearsed story. "Tiffany did sleep outside the building last night. We got into a fight, so I got her drunk and left her out there in the cold."
I spun the tale—how we'd hit up some bar where I was totally into this guy, but of course, he only had eyes for Tiffany. He got handsy, left bruises on her, and I had to pull him off before it went too far. But honestly? I was pissed. Pissed that the guy I wanted barely glanced at me when she was around.
So yeah, I drowned her in tequila and dumped her downstairs, let her figure it out on her own. She blacked out, didn't remember me dragging her home later, so she just assumed we'd partied till dawn.
Vincent knew me well enough. He listened, skepticism flickering behind his polite nod, then ushered me out. I figured that was that.
Then, a month later, Tiffany's voice trembled through the phone. "I'm pregnant."
"Whose? Dominic's or your husband's?"
"Vincent hasn't touched me since that night. He's still weirded out by what you told him. It's Dominic's."
"Not even once?"
"We did it before the birthday party, but if that was it, I'd know by now. It's Dominic's."
I pinched the bridge of my nose. "You had an affair and didn't even use protection?"
Her voice cracked. "It was my first time actually sleeping with someone else! I flirt, but I never went all the way before! How was I supposed to know one time would do it?"
I let out a sharp breath. "I can't clean this up for you."
Just as I was about to hang up, her voice shattered.
"Then come with me to get a D&C. Please. I can't go alone."
I agreed. Tomorrow. No point in dragging it out.
