Georgia smirked bitterly, her eyes flicking away from Louis's fading silhouette. She crouched back down, scrubbing the floor's stubborn water stains.
She and Louis were on totally different tracks now—ships passing in the night.
Her real focus was clear: get Phillip Crawford in the ICU to warm up to her. That was the key.
Louis paused at the hallway's corner, Georgia's slight frame mopping the floor stuck in his mind.
He'd seen her earlier, taking crap from those nurses without a word.
He always figured her for a spoiled rich girl who'd scheme her way to the top. But today, her quiet strength hit him like a ton of bricks, burrowing deep.
After a moment, he pulled out his phone and dialed Daniel.
In Saylor Hospital's ICU, Georgia froze as Noelle strutted in, all smug.
Noelle? Doing Phillip's therapy? With her status, that screamed how big a deal this guy was.
"How's it hanging, Mr. Crawford?" Noelle asked, "accidentally" shoving Georgia aside.
"You seriously asking that?" Phillip snapped from his bed. "Five years of daily therapy, and you don't know what's up?"
Noelle's face flushed, but she was glad only Georgia, the lowly aide, saw her slip-up.
She clammed up—nobody in Journ City was dumb enough to cross Phillip. Former military district big shot, even retired, the Crawford family's clout was untouchable.
Everyone knew: the Rathbone family owned the business world, the Crawfords ran the military game.
Noelle started wiping Phillip down for his massage and acupuncture, but spotting Georgia still there, she barked, "What're you gawking at? Wait outside."
Seeing Phillip was fine, Georgia slipped out to the hallway and sank onto a bench, catching her breath.
Just as her eyes started to close, a jacket draped over her shoulders.
She looked up to see her dad, Vance, smiling down.
"Dad? What's up?" Georgia asked, standing.
"Chill if you're beat, kid," Vance said softly, easing her back down. "You haven't been home in two days, so I swung by.
"Also, Louis's assistant dropped this off. I ain't in your business, so here—you deal with it."
He handed her a folder. Georgia opened it and stopped cold. 'A property transfer from Louis? What's he up to?'
He was still mulling it over when a yell exploded from the room,"Georgia! Who're you jabbering with? Get in here!"
Shaking it off, Georgia grabbed the papers and rushed back. "What's wrong, Mr. Crawford?"
Phillip didn't even look at her. His eyes were locked on Vance in the hallway.
The second he recognized him, he erupted. "Get your sorry butt in here, you worthless bum!"
Georgia's eyes narrowed. "Mr. Crawford, I'll take your grumbling 'cause you're old, but that's my dad. He's never crossed you."
Before Phillip could fire back, Noelle swooped in like a guard dog. "Georgia, watch it! You're an aide—keep the patient happy. Can't do that? Hit the bricks!"
"Shut it!" Georgia and Phillip snapped in sync.
The room went silent. Noelle's cheeks burned—she couldn't risk pissing off Phillip.
She turned with a fake grin. "Sorry, Mr. Crawford. Didn't mean to jump in. Your health's too important to let some aide mess it up."
"Get out!" Phillip roared.
Noelle smirked at Georgia, thinking she'd won. "You heard him. Why're you still here? Scram!"
Georgia glared at the cranky old man and headed for the door.
"Hold it!" Phillip's sharp tone stopped her cold.
