For the first time in years, someone had truly stepped forward to protect her. A wave of emotion instantly washed over Georgia's heart. It would be a lie to say she wasn't touched.
'No wonder Gemma has Louis completely wrapped around her finger,' Georgia thought. 'So this is what it feels like to be protected. How blissful!'
Watching Colin shield Georgia so protectively, Louis narrowed his eyes, a wicked smile playing at the corners of his mouth.
"Mr. Crawford," Louis warned coldly, "you'd do well to stay out of things that don't concern you."
Hearing this, Colin smiled back coolly. "Georgia is the one I've sworn to protect for life. If I don't look after her, do you really think that duty falls to you—her ex-husband?"
The words "ex-husband" struck Louis like a sledgehammer to the chest.
For three years, Louis had grown so accustomed to being the only one in Georgia's eyes, taking her silent devotion for granted. But now, right after their divorce, she was already with another man.
This realization was utterly unacceptable to him.
Seeing Louis and Colin locked in a standoff over her, Georgia grew worried that if the argument continued, it might damage Colin's reputation. She stood up and said to Colin, who was protecting her,
"Mr. Crawford, since we've finished eating, let's go. There's no need to waste time on people who don't matter."
Hearing Georgia's words, Colin flashed Louis a triumphant smirk, then turned to shield Georgia as they headed out.
To Louis, Colin's smile was nothing short of a provocation. But what stung even more was hearing Georgia repeatedly call him "someone who didn't matter."
'After three years of her saying she loved me, was it all just a lie? Was she ever really the woman I thought she was?' Louis couldn't help but question everything, bitter disbelief twisting inside him.
"Miss Murray, how could you say that? Old affections die hard between spouses. Even though you and Louis are divorced, the Rathbone family still cares so much about you. If you want to blame me, that's fine—but how can you say Louis means nothing to you?" Gemma's grating voice rang out again
Georgia, clearly annoyed, snapped back, "Gemma, stop being such a drama queen when you've got nothing better to do. What happens between me and the Rathbone family is none of your business.
"Honestly, I've never even considered you worthy of my attention. Typical of someone from a nobody family—always so petty and small-minded. Instead of meddling here, why not focus on how you're going to climb the social ladder?"
The disdain and mockery from Georgia made Gemma's fury blazed. Georgia had always looked down on her—whenever people mentioned Georgia, she was the most envied socialite among Journ City's elite, a dazzling star forever out of Gemma's reach.
Three years ago, she and Cora had joined forces to push her into the depths, thinking Gemma would be left to wallow in the dark and never recover. Yet even now, she was still nothing more than a punching bag for Georgia's casual ridicule.
At that thought, Gemma finally snapped. She lunged forward, blocking their path.
"Georgia, explain yourself! Who are you calling trash?" Gemma spat angrily.
Before Georgia could fight back, Colin pulled her into his arms and turned to Louis.
"Mr. Rathbone, please keep your mis—" Colin said. He paused, as if realizing he'd said something inappropriate, then quickly 'corrected' himself, "MSG."
Colin gave Louis a deliberate once-over and added with a smirk,
"Just a friendly reminder, Mr. Rathbone—too much MSG isn't good for your health."
With that, Colin wrapped his arm around Georgia and swaggered away triumphantly, not sparing a single glance back.
Only then did Georgia realize that beneath Colin's refined gentlemanly demeanor lay such biting wit—what a perfect wingman! 'Now that's my kind of man!' she thought, utterly smitten.
Louis clenched his fists so tightly his knuckles turned white, his eyes blazing as he stared at the two figures embracing as they walked away. Only when they had completely disappeared from view—after they'd walked out of the restaurant—did he finally unleash his fury, delivering a violent kick that sent the table where Georgia and Colin had just been sitting screeching a meter across the floor, drawing shocked stares from the other diners.
"Fuck!" Without another word, he stormed out, slamming the door shut with such force that it nearly hit Gemma in the face as she hurried after him.
"Louis..." Gemma called out plaintively, her voice full of grievance.
But Louis, his expression icy, strode coldly to the car without so much as a glance in her direction.
A wave of panic washed over Gemma. 'This has never happened before,' she thought. 'What's wrong with Louis? Has he really developed feelings for Georgia over these three years?'
The more Gemma dwelled on it, the more frightened she became. She hurried to catch up with Louis, not daring to let him out of her sight.
Louis slammed the car door with a deafening bang, making Daniel—mid-bite of his takeout—jump in surprise.
'Didn't Mr. Rathbone go to dinner with Dr. Gemma?' Daniel wondered. 'Why is he coming out fuming like this?'
"Drive," Louis commanded icily as Gemma settled into the car.
Though his voice sounded calm, Daniel felt an oppressive, suffocating weight descend upon him—like a storm about to break.
Just then, a military sedan cruised past. Through the window, Daniel caught sight of Georgia and Colin inside, laughing and chatting animatedly.
Seeing Georgia laughing so radiantly, Daniel finally understood the source of his boss's rage.
He found his boss dramatic. Daniel thought. 'Now that Georgia has another suitor, he just can't let her go!'
Daniel could already picture the hellish journey Louis would have to reclaim his wife.
As the neon-lit night streamed past the car windows, Louis sat shrouded in darkness, his inky-black eyes radiating a grim and ruthless intensity. "Take Gemma home first."
Hearing Louis's command, Gemma was utterly unwilling. But she knew he was furious—if she threw a tantrum now, she'd be walking right into his line of fire. So she meekly agreed.
But deep down, Gemma harbored a renewed grudge against Georgia. "It's all that bitch's fault—she ruined my date with Louis!"
