Inside the military sedan, Georgia glanced at the distinguished and refined Colin, gratitude welling up within her.
"Mr. Crawford, thank you so much for today..." Georgia said softly.
Colin cast a sidelong glance at Georgia, a doting look in his eyes.
He said softly, "In my heart, you're just like a little sister. Why don't you call me 'Colin,' just like Iris does?"
Hearing Colin's words, Georgia finally relaxed. 'So he really just sees me as a little sister. Thank goodness!' she thought.
She was genuinely afraid he might develop romantic feelings for her.
For some reason, whenever Georgia was with Colin, she always felt a certain warmth and familiarity—but it was definitely not romantic.
As Colin's car pulled into the slums, Vance was standing at the intersection, anxiously peering into the distance.
Georgia knew
When Vance saw his daughter Georgia step out of a high-end military sedan, he was momentarily stunned before quickly regaining his composure.
He had never metColin... But he had certainly heard of him. 'How did Georgia end up with someone like that?' Vance wondered.
Georgia had just gotten out of an unhappy marriage—the last thing Vance wanted was for his daughter to rush into another relationship, especially with someone from a powerful military-political family like the Crawfords.
Vance said politely, "Thank you, Mr. Crawfords, for bringing my daughter home..."
He added, "It's already quite late, so we won't trouble you to come in."
Before Vance could finish his polite refusal, Colin smoothly interjected, "It's no trouble at all, Mr. Murray. Why not invite me in for a cup of tea..."
Vance choked back his words, thinking, 'How can this well-mannered young man be so socially oblivious? Can't he tell I don't want to invite him in?'
But since Crawford had already made his request, refusing him now would only make Vance appear impolite.
Seeing that his daughter offered no objection, Vance made a gesture of invitation and led the way inside.
Upon entering their humble home, Colin noted its bare walls and sparse furnishings, yet Georgia and her father showed not the slightest hint of shame. Instead, they warmly offered him a cup of hot water with genuine hospitality.
A faint smile touched Colin's lips, but inside, a sudden pang of sorrow rippled through his heart...
Colin sat with Georgia and her father, nursing his hot cup as they chatted about everyday matters for nearly an hour. Yet throughout, his gaze remained fixed on the small dining table where Elena's memorial portrait stood.
Georgia couldn't help but wonder, 'Colin is supposed to be a hardened military man, so why does he always enjoy chatting with me about mundane daily matters? He was like this even when he took me out to dinner, and now again. He never seems to get tired of it.'
After nearly an hour, Colin finally, though a bit reluctantly, brought himself to leave. Georgia escorted him out of the narrow alley.
Deep within the labyrinthine alleys of the slums, a discreetly luxurious car lay silently parked, blending seamlessly into the darkness—like a predator lying in wait.
"Georgia, you can stop here. Sorry to have troubled you tonight—get some rest early." Colin stopped in his tracks, the night discreetly veiling the tender concern in his eyes as he gazed at Georgia.
"It's okay, Colin. You're not familiar with the roads here—I'll walk you to the intersection and then head back."
To someone, watching from inside the luxury car, their interaction seemed laced with an unbearable reluctance to part. The tension in the car thickened, his mood growing darker as he witnessed the scene.
After watching Colin's car disappear, Georgia finally turned to head home. Yet she couldn't shake the feeling of a cold, piercing gaze on her back, as if someone were watching her like a hawk. She cast a wary glance around, but saw no one. 'Guess I'm just being paranoid,' Georgia thought, finally relaxing enough to go home.
