The car sped through the streets. Louis indifferently tossed a box of Band-Aids into the back seat.
Georgia wiped the blood from her forehead and applied a few. "Mr. Rathbone, thank you for showing up in time to save me earlier. I owe you one.
"Please pull over now. People might gossip if they see you and your ex-wife sharing a car."
Hearing Georgia address him as "Mr. Rathbone", Louis's knuckles whitened as he tightened his grip on the steering wheel. "You're worried about gossip?"
The retort left Georgia speechless for a while. "Of course I don't care. My reputation couldn't get much worse. I'm just thinking of yours, Mr. Rathbone."
Louis's eyes turned icy, but he had no intention of stopping the car.
Georgia sighed inwardly, 'Anyway, I wasn't afraid of him now—he'd have to stop eventually.' With that thought, she calmed down.
Suddenly, her phone rang. Seeing the caller ID, she answered quickly. "G-Georgia?" Lila's voice, usually sharp and steady, was hesitant.
"What's wrong, Lila?" Georgia frowned.
"G-Georgia, it's getting worse. It's impacted the whole Journ Health Department. Today, rioters showed up at the Authority gates with banners, blocked the entrance, and even injured the guard.
"The officials are furious. They're revoking your medical license. I tried to explain for a long time, but it didn't help," Lida said.
Lila felt truly helpless about this. Even if she knew Noelle was a fake, the fact that she'd signed a contract under Georgie's pen name was unchangeable.
At her words, Georgia fell silent. This outcome was beyond her expectations.
After a long pause, Lila said hesitantly, "Maybe, if Mr. Rathbone is a dead end, you could try asking Samuel?"
The phone volume was loud; Louis heard every word clearly. At the mention of her asking Samuel, the temperature in the car dropped further.
Georgia shivered. "Samuel and I only ever had a bet, remember? And tomorrow's the final deadline for that bet."
"What?" Lila shrieked.
Georgia said, "If I can clear my name in medicine by tomorrow, Saylor must restore all the rights I had when I was champion of the top doctors ranking."
Lida snapped, "But right now, you're not even close to clearing your name—you're being torn apart from all the infamy. I mean, have you lost your mind? How could you make such a stupid bet?"
Lida added, "Georgia, can you at least give me a hint? What exactly are you trying to do? These wild ups and downs—you're either going to give me a heart attack or drive me crazy."
The oppressive atmosphere in the car remained. Georgia looked out the window, a faint smile touching her lips. "I want my job back, that's all."
Lida answered quickly, "Your job? Are you naive or just stupid? With how badly you're being slandered, or how much people are trashing you?
"If the Health Authority revokes your license, forget being run out of medicine—Noelle, as Georgie, could sue you into bankruptcy."
Listening to Lila's nonstop rambling, Georgia sighed. "Chill it. Saylor will soon restore my position."
"But you said you have no pull with Samuel. How are they going to restore it?" Lida asked.
Georgia said casually, "Tomorrow is the last day of the bet. Who knows? Maybe there'll be a huge reversal. Right, Lila?"
Lila was lost for words for a while. "Fine, you blow me away. I'll watch your final showdown tomorrow."
Then she added, "But Georgia, brace yourself tonight. The mob's getting worse. They hurt you today; who knows what they'll try tomorrow?"
Lida continued, "They're demanding the committee kick you out. Stay away from the crowds. Maybe I should go with you tomorrow."
"It's okay, Lila. No need to go to the trouble." Hanging up, Georgia realized the car had stopped. They were at Malibu Villa.
'Wasn't this the house he'd prepared for Gemma? For three years, I'd never set foot here,' she thought. A bitter smile touched Georgia's lips.
She never thought Louis would bring her here. During their three-year marriage, he'd mostly come here, living with Gemma in this so-called "nest of love."
While she'd been left in the Rathbones' mansion, ignored, letting Phoebe and Joel bully and humiliate her.
'But now, we're divorced, and he brings me here?' She glanced at Louis, his expression darker than ever. 'It's not like I offended him, right?' she mused.
Georgia tried to open the car door, only to find it was locked. Resigned, she met Louis's gaze in the rearview mirror.
His eyes were icy, burning with suppressed anger. Finally, his lips parted. "Georgia. To get your championship back, have you lost even the very basic principles of decency?"
Georgia froze. His words felt like a knife twisting deep inside, a dull ache spreading. "I have no principles? Afraid I'll affect Gemma by returning to medicine, are you?"
She sneered, "Mr. Rathbone, you spare no effort for your sweetheart. All of Journ knows Noelle is Gemma's lapdog.
"The night before the prelims, you helped Gemma by injuring my wrist. Tomorrow is the final. What new trick do you have planned for me this time, Mr. Rathbone?"
Louis's gaze turned arctic, his lips pressed into a thin line. Suddenly, he flung his door open, got out, and slammed it shut with a bang.
His polished dress shoe kicked the tire viciously. "Damn it!" He couldn't explain the suffocating frustration that rose in him when she accused him of helping Gemma target her.
Pulling out a cigarette, he lit it and took a harsh drag. As smoke curled upward, the stomach pain he'd ignored for days flared sharply.
Irritated, he tossed the half-smoked cigarette away, yanked open the back door, and pulled Georgia out. "You said you owed me. Fix me a meal."
The mocking smile froze on Georgia's face. She hadn't expected Louis to change his attitude so quickly.
At the mention of cooking, she suddenly noticed he looked thinner. His slightly pale face and furrowed brows all indicated that his stomachache was flaring up.
'I'm so pathetic,' she thought, 'one moment shattered by his words, the next softened by seeing his pain.'
Seeing her hesitation, Louis said flatly, "Don't overthink it. I got you out of that crowd. You cook me a meal. Even Stevens."
'Even Stevens? How fitting.' Georgia shoved down her moment of weakness and walked towards the house. 'Just one meal. If it severs this connection for good, it's worth it,' she thought.
Georgia wiped the blood from her forehead and applied a few. "Mr. Rathbone, thank you for showing up in time to save me earlier. I owe you one.
