Louis frowned, hanging up the phone while simultaneously grabbing his jacket and pulling up the news.
Seeing the photos of him and Georgia online, his eyes turned icy. He shot Georgia a look of cold derision. "This is what you wanted?"
Georgia was also stunned by the online story. Hearing Louis's accusation ignited her anger. "What I wanted? Louis, what exactly did I do to deserve this baseless blame?"
Seeing her defiant refusal to admit fault only deepened Louis's scowl. "You'd better pray Gemma is fine. Otherwise, you'll regret it."
"Daniel will be here shortly to take you home." With that, he turned to leave.
Georgia grabbed his arm, her gaze cold and piercing. "Louis. You've never believed me."
Not three years ago, not when she was caught in that bed, not even now with this news. Never even a moment to hear her explanation.
Louis pulled his arm free, his expression frigid. He couldn't respond to her accusation. Driving away, Georgia's words echoed in his mind: "You've never believed me." Louis murmured, 'No. Never.'
His car soon pulled up to the Kirkland residence. The Kirklands were accustomed to his visits. Entering Gemma's room, he saw blood staining her wrist bandage.
Tears welled in her eyes as she spotted him. "Louis, do you regret divorcing her?" Gemma asked, pale and fragile.
"Don't overthink. Of course not," Louis replied. He thought, 'How could I regret divorcing that woman?'
Hearing Louis's words, Gemma felt much more at ease. "Louis, I know you were with her tonight. You're divorced. Why would she do this to hurt me?"
She continued, "Did you divorce because of me? If so, it's only right for her to target me. After all, I just can't let you go."
Seeing Gemma's submissive and fragile demeanor, unlike Georgia's defiant nature, Louis patted her back gently. "It's not like that. Stop worrying."
Gemma snapped, "But how can I not? She knows Noelle is my friend. Yet she plagiarized her work and tried to steal her identity. She's deliberately targeting me!"
She continued, "Her actions recently have already angered the authorities. She will be kicked out tomorrow.
"Knowing she's finished, she set this up tonight, getting close to you. Everyone knows a word from you could decide her fate in this competition."
After hearing Gemma's words, recalling the bowl of soup Georgia had made for him, Louis's eyes suddenly turned icy.
'So that's why she revealed tonight that she'd been making my lunch for three years? A calculated move?' he mused.
"Gemma, you have my word. I will take no part in this competition. For either side," Louis said firmly.
Hearing his promise, a flash of triumph lit Gemma's eyes. His taking Georgia away tonight had worried her; she feared old ties might sway him. But his explicit vow not to help Georgia was a relief.
After calming Gemma, Louis left the house. Sitting in his car, he silently lit a cigarette.
It wasn't until Daniel called to report that Georgia had been safely sent home that his heart regained a trace of calm.
He couldn't explain why being with Gemma felt increasingly exhausting. A weariness of the heart.
The next morning, Georgia hailed a taxi early and got to the competition venue. She thought she'd arrived early enough but underestimated the mob's fervor.
The area outside the venue was packed with a dense crowd. Banner after banner in the crowd caught the eye.

Camera crews swarmed, their flashes illuminating the pre-dawn darkness, casting a harsh light on the scene while masking its ugliness.
Online, live streams of today's event dominated screens. Self-proclaimed guardians of medical ethics flooded comments with vitriol, each trying to outdo the other by kicking Georgia while she was down, burying her deeper in the mud.
Gemma sat in front of the computer, watching the result of her manipulation, and gradually a smirk spread across her face.
She murmured, "Kicking someone when they're down. How delightful. Dared to hit on Louis, huh? Let's see you crawl out of this."
Then she dialed another number. "Noah. Make the headlines more explosive. Post that video of Georgia getting beaten yesterday.
"Frame it as 'Georgia Incites Public Fury, Mobbed in Street.' A plagiarizing, identity-stealing parasite who trades on her looks has no place in medicine."
She added, "And remember, Noelle will win. If you want to get a head start, after reporting Georgia's scandal, start working on a press release praising Noelle."
"Y-yes, Miss Kirkland! Consider it done." the Editor Noah Miller stammered, overcome with excitement. At that moment, he was especially grateful to Gemma for giving him this opportunity.
If today's matter went smoothly, his small news agency would gain more wealth and fame than he had earned in the previous ten years combined.
Georgia observed the raging crowd with detached calm, then simply turned and entered the competition building through a rear entrance.
"These people have endless energy. Camped out all night? If I were Georgia, publicly shamed like this, I'd never show my face again," someone inside the lounge said.
Another echoed, "Serves her right! Who told her to act like scum? Plagiarizing Miss Faulkner, stealing her identity? Karma's a bitch."
"Fucking disgusting. Competing with someone like her is such a disgrace," someone else chimed in.
A voice cut in, "Don't be jealous. She's just got connections, that's all."
"Come on, Jealous? Of what? Her looks? Or that she lets men use her for free?" Janice Swfit smirked.
"Hey, Janice, that's harsh!" someone replied.
Janice said, "What? I'm just telling the truth."
A group of people hid their envy and resentment, their eyes filled with mockery and disdain.
They wondered why they had slaved away in the medical field for over a decade, only to be outshone by a young, disgraced lady.
Georgia pushed open the lounge door. Her gaze swept over the group before she silently walked past them into her private preparation room.
Caught gossiping, they flushed with momentary embarrassment. But the certainty of Georgia's imminent downfall bolstered them.
They thought in unison, 'However flawed we are, we're still better than her.'
Inside her room, Georgia closed her eyes for a brief rest. When she walked out later, dressed in her white coat with her medical kit ready, she ran straight into Noelle, who was just arriving.
Recognizing Georgia, Noelle instantly plastered on a sweet smile. "Georgia, so early! Whatever happened to your head?"
