Cedric sat among the judges with his usual gentle composure. His gaze swept over Noelle's expectant eyes, then darkened slightly. He wrote a number on his scorecard and raised it.
"Don't bother to look. Dr. Benneth comes for Georgie, and Miss Faulkner is Georgie. Seven perfect scores for sure," someone said.
"Absolutely! No suspense left," another echoed.
Riding the wave of audience excitement and soaring online viewership, Liam remained excited. He silently thanked the official who had swapped Georgia and Noelle's orders.
Liam sneered inwardly, 'Trash like Georgia couldn't possibly anchor the finale.' Then he announced dramatically, "Dr. Benneth's final score is—zero! Wait, zero?"
Silence crashed over the arena. After a long while, people rubbed their eyes in disbelief, looking again at Cedric's score. Zero. Still zero. Unmistakably 0.
Noelle stared at the glaring number on the scoreboard, almost losing her balance. If the operating table hadn't supported her, she would have fainted. "How could it be?" she murmured.
Aron demanded. "Dr. Benneth, do you have some prejudice against Miss Faulkner? Her flower-twisting needling technique was witnessed by all. Such brilliance can never deserve a zero!"
"Perhaps, a mistake, Dr. Benneth?" another judge offered weakly, trying to provide an out. This was a cataclysmic reversal for everyone.
"But Dr. Campbell came for Noelle, right? He gave Georgia full marks but Noelle zero?" Janice whispered frantically to others.
In the audience, Gemma's hired trolls erupted. "Explain yourself, Dr. Benneth! Why give Noelle a zero? Did Georgia sleep her way into your bed too?"
With that shout, the audience stirred again.
"I swear those two definitely have an affair!" someone shouted.
"Eww, some doctor, huh? Just a beast in human skin!" another echoed.
"Don't get worked up. Record this. So even national-level races have shady deals. Expose it; we must expose it!" someone else sneered.
Hearing the anger from the audience, Liam intervened, his voice thick with disapproval. "Quiet, everyone! Please! Dr. Benneth is a distinguished scholar. Let's hear his comments first."
"Wait!" Before Cedric could speak, Aron grabbed the microphone. "As far as I know, Georgia never formally signed up for this competition. She was a direct insertion.
"Moreover, she was involved in plagiarism during the qualifiers and later attempted identity theft. Despite this notorious misconduct, she wasn't kicked out. Clearly, she has powerful backing."
"The medical profession is founded on healing. Yet we harbor such black sheep? Today, even if the highest authority violated the rules, I would not allow it," he added.
Aron's declaration caused another uproar. They thought in unison, 'The uncompromising Aron strikes again.' It took several shouts from Liam before the venue finally quieted down.
Aron's words boosted Noelle's confidence again. Her expression shifted from serene confidence to wronged resignation.
Whether it was the audience on the scene or those watching on TV, everyone felt that Noelle was the victim of gross injustice.
As discontented murmurs rippled through the crowd, Cedric finally lifted his microphone. "Miss Faulkner," he asked, "first, I must ask you a question. Please answer seriously."
Not expecting Cedric to ask a question, Noelle tensed up instantly.
"Are you truly Georgie?" Cedric continued.
The question slammed into Noelle. Her mind went blank. She clutched the table again, a cold sweat breaking out all over her body. For a full 20 seconds, Noelle didn't react at all.
Cedric pressed on. "Miss Faulkner, is my question hard to answer?"
Panic surged anew in Noelle. Just as she didn't know what to do next, a voice from the audience shouted indignantly, "What's the point? Miss Faulkner is Georgie by verification. That can't be fake, right?
"And she just demonstrated the Flower-Twisting Needling Technique from On Traditional Medicine Acupuncture. Isn't that enough to prove she's Georgie?"
Hearing this, Noelle gradually pulled herself together. 'He's right. I've got the name, the proof, the timing, the evidence, and the public support. What is there to fear?'
