As he spoke, Victor snatched up the ashtray from his desk and hurled it at Vance.
Fortunately, his aim was off. The ashtray whizzed past Vance's head, missing by inches.
Victor barked, "When you had nowhere else to go, it was me who threw you this fucking lifeline. Don't you appreciate it? Then get the hell out!"
Seeing Vance standing there in stubborn silence, Victor's anger boiled over. The sight reminded him of the recent scandal when he and Cora were caught trying to steal Georgia's phone verification data, leaving both of them utterly humiliated.
If it weren't for the recent news of Gemma and Louis's engagement bringing some reflected glory to the Murray Group, the company would surely have suffered losses in business.
Victor's rage burned hotter the more he thought about it.
He snapped, "I don't give a damn why you hit him. The fact is, James is in the hospital now. If you want to keep this job, you'd better get your ass over there after work and beg for his forgiveness. Even if you have to kneel and grovel, you'd better make damn sure he calms down. If he calls the cops, I swear to God, I'll make your life a living hell!"
Victor was well aware of how James bullied Vance day in and day out. In fact, he took more pleasure than anyone in watching Vance be humiliated.
Victor always thought. 'Why is it that even though we both grew up in poor families, he got to marry someone as beautiful, gentle, and graceful as Elena? Why is he the one who built such a large and successful company from scratch? Why does he get to have such an outstanding daughter too?'
Vance stared at Victor in stunned silence. Never in his wildest dreams had he imagined Victor would make such a demand.
'How could he ask me to beg that brute James?'
Victor snarled, "What? Not fucking going? Then get the hell out! And don't you dare come crawling back to me, you worthless good-for-nothing!"
Trembling with rage, Vance stared at Victor, the brazenly arrogant usurper who had stolen everything from him and now strutted around like he owned the place.
For three years, everyone called Vance a worthless loser, even he began to believe it himself. Yet despite it all, Georgia still came back to him. For her, he would give up everything.
Though he couldn't bear losing this job, if keeping this little bit of income meant selling out his own daughter, that was something he simply couldn't do no matter how worthless he might be.
Vance turned and strode away. For the first time in three years, his back was ramrod straight.
Back home, Vance dug out a photo of Elena when she was alive and pressed it tightly to his chest.
"Elena," he whispered, "How can I protect our daughter?"
The only bedroom had been given to Georgia, so he had been sleeping on the living room couch ever since.
When Georgia came home, she saw her father gently caressing her mother's photo with his now-roughened hands.
Seeing his daughter come home, Vance got up with a warm smile.
"Georgia, you're back! Let me whip up some noodles for you," he said.
Noticing that her father, Vance, seemed preoccupied today, Georgia didn't rush into the kitchen as she usually did.
Soon, Vance quietly served a bowl of noodles and watched as Georgia finished eating. Only then did he finally speak, his voice tinged with disappointment.
"Georgia, Dad lost his job today. Tomorrow, I'll go out and start looking for something else."
Georgia had no idea what her dad had been through that day. When she heard what he said, she deliberately pouted and teased.
"Dad, you know my studio's short-handed! Instead of helping me out, you're off looking for other jobs? That's so irresponsible of you, Dad!"
Even though Vance knew his daughter was just trying to cheer him up, it still warmed his heart.
"Dad, I have to start working at Royal Dawn Sanatorium tomorrow, but my studio's just getting off the ground and there's so much to set up and prepare. How am I supposed to find time for all that?"
Listening to his daughter continue to talk about her studio, Vance finally couldn't hold back and said, "Georgia, Dad knows you want to take back the Murray Group. But right now, we're completely outmatched by your uncle family. How can we possibly compete with them?"
He sighed, his voice gentle but firm. "Sweetheart, just listen to my advice, okay?"
Hearing this, Georgia's eyes gleamed with determination as she met Vance's gaze through his glasses.
"Dad, just consider this as helping your daughter out for now. The annual Wedding Expo is on August 8th. If our studio can secure a spot to exhibit our designs there, will you take charge of running the studio?"
Seeing the unwavering determination in Georgia's eyes, Vance felt his confidence surge. Yet the harsh realities of the past few years had beaten him down hard.
In the end, though he agreed to his daughter's request, deep down he still couldn't quite believe that their modest studio could ever make it into the Wedding Expo.
