As the workday was drawing to a close, Daniel walked in and said, "Boss, Miss Kirkland has been waiting for you in the next room for over two hours. She insists on accompanying you back to your family home."
At these words, Louis's sword-like brows furrowed slightly.
Ever since his divorce from Georgia, Elsie had been giving Louis nothing but cold looks. He wasn't keen on going to the family home just to invite a snub.
Daniel reported, "Mrs. Rathbone invited Miss Murray to your family home today. When Miss Joel and Mrs. Phoebe heard about it, they also went over. As you're aware, your mother has never really liked Miss Murray..."
Upon hearing that, Louis's headache, which had just started to ease, returned again.
"Get back home right now!"
Daniel hesitated, "And Miss Kirkland...?"
Louis replied indifferently, "Let her come if she wants. She'll have to meet them sooner or later."
For some reason, when Daniel heard his boss say those words, he couldn't help but feel a pang of bitterness.
Gemma's heart leapt with joy when she heard Louis was going to take her to his family home himself, even though she'd already resolved to go there tonight by hook or by crook.
"Georgia, I'll make you regret tonight!" Gemma vowed through gritted teeth, her eyes burning with determination.
When Louis and Gemma arrived at the Rathbone family manor, they found the dining table already full, everyone dining with practiced elegance.
As everyone watched Louis enter the dining room with Gemma, Elsie shot a worried glance at Georgia, thinking to herself, 'That wretched boy! How could he be so thoughtless by bringing that woman here? Isn't this just a direct slap in the face for Georgia?'
But before Elsie could voice her anger, Phoebe, seated nearby, suddenly demanded, her voice sharp. "What are you two doing here?"
Louis fell silent.
And so Georgia.
Gemma felt utterly humiliated. Just as she forced a painfully awkward smile and was about to speak, Elsie's thunderous voice boomed again, "Louis, take that woman of yours and get out of here!"
Georgia was stunned.
'Since when did the Rathbone home start shutting Louis out?' She thought in disbelief.
"Mom! Don't let that rascal upset you. Calm down!" Phoebe hurried to pat Elsie's back. For all her usual aloofness, her concern for Elsie was completely genuine.
"Mom, I had Mabel prepare this herbal porridge especially for you. Please try some."
"Dad, please have some as well."
With that, paying no heed to Louis and Gemma still standing at the dining room entrance, Phoebe coolly ordered, "Mabel, serve Georgia a bowl too. She also enjoys this herbal porridge."
In that instant, Gemma felt a resounding slap in the face.
She didn't know since when Phoebe, a high-and-mighty ice queen, started treating Georgia so well.
She convinced Phoebe was obviously just trying to embarrass her.
Gemma was seething with rage, itching to flip the table over, yet on the outside, she forced a perfectly wronged expression onto her face.
Georgia just couldn't figure out what Phoebe was up to with this weird move. 'What on earth is she playing at?'
Soon, a bowl of herbal porridge was placed in front of Georgia. Cold sweat broke out on her forehead as she thought, 'Is Phoebe trying to make me a target?'
"Mabel, what's with today's dishes? Why are they all to Georgia's taste?" Joel joked, trying to ease the tension.
But his remark only drew another icy retort from Phoebe.
"If you don't want to eat, then get out!"
Joel immediately clammed up and started eating, though it was clear he was doing it grudgingly.
It was then that Georgia realized every dish was to her taste. Just as she was trying to figure out why, Elsie's warm voice chimed in again.
"Georgia, my dear, eat more. Look how thin you've gotten. Put some meat on your bones so I can introduce you to some nice young men…" Elsie urged affectionately.
Georgia was stunned.
Standing at the dining room entrance, Louis's face darkened upon hearing his grandmother planning to set Georgia up with a new boyfriend. He took Gemma's hand and led her to the table.
"Grandma, you don't need to worry about it. She doesn't need you to set her up with a boyfriend!"
With practiced ease, he picked up a pair of spoons and forks for both Gemma and himself.
At these words, Louis's sword-like brows furrowed slightly.
