"Georgia, this is your favorite. Here, have some more..." Elsie beamed as she kept piling food into Georgia's plate, until it was mounded high like a small hill.
Sidelined and forgotten, Louis and Gemma now felt rather awkward.
At the dining table, seemingly only Charles and Joel were welcoming toward the couple.
"Gemma, it's so wonderful you could come! Mom and I were absolutely thrilled when we heard about your engagement to Louis!" Joel said deliberately, even name-dropping his mother, Phoebe, to lend weight to his words.
"Shut up and eat!" Phoebe snapped at Joel, unceremoniously.
Joel had thought that name-dropping his mother would give Gemma an easy way out, but instead of saving her face, his attempt backfired and he ended up getting himself scolded. After Phoebe's sharp rebuke, he fell silent and just buried his face in his plate.
Under Elsie's relentless serving, Georgia found herself stuffed to the brim.
Poor Gemma barely touched her food, forcing down a few tasteless bites before the awkward dinner finally came to an end.
Seeing everyone gathered in the living room, Gemma, wary that Georgia might steal her thunder, promptly approached Elsie with a gentle, practiced smile on her lips.
"Elsie," Gemma said sweetly, "This is my first time visiting the family estate as Louis's fiancée, so I made sure to ask him about your preferences and brought you a special gift."
Louis gave Gemma a cold look, his eyes darkening. She had never once asked about Elsie's preferences, not even once.
Elsie gave Louis a skeptical look. She didn't believe Louis knew what she liked.
Completely disregarding Gemma's saccharine smile, Elsie turned warmly to Georgia and asked, "Georgia, when I called you, didn't you say you were getting me a gift? I've always treated you as my own granddaughter. There's no need for such formal fuss, we're family."
Before Georgia could respond, Louis coolly interjected in Gemma's defense: "Grandma, this is Gemma's way of showing she cares…"
Shooting a guarded glance at the composed Georgia, Louis added in a measured tone, "And mine as well..."
Georgia couldn't help but glance at Louis. 'Does he really believe the pendant Gemma snatched from me is supposed to be his heartfelt gift?'
Seeing Georgia's gaze turn toward him, Louis's mood instantly lifted.
She still cared about him after all.
Hearing Louis speak up for her, Gemma shot Georgia a triumphant glance. Then, eager to show off, she quickly took out an exquisite gift box and slowly opened it in front of everyone like she was presenting a treasure.
"Elsie," she purred, "Louis and I painstakingly picked this out for you after much deliberation! Look at this pearl pendant. Its flawless luster and perfect roundness make it absolutely ideal for someone as graceful and dignified as you..."
Gemma hadn't even finished speaking when Elsie's face suddenly flushed crimson and she began gasping for breath.
"You... you..."
Seeing Elsie's face flush red from labored breathing, Gemma stood there, utterly bewildered.
Georgia quickly supported Elsie's head, applying pressure to her philtrum. A twinge of guilt shot through her. She made a mental note to give Elsie a proper acupuncture treatment later.
Thinking this, Georgia hurriedly helped Elsie into the bedroom.
As soon as they entered the room, a sharp slap cracked through the air as Phoebe struck Gemma hard across the cheek.
"Gemma!" Phoebe snarled, her voice trembling with rage. "Did you do that on purpose?"
Gemma clutched her stinging, slapped cheek as tears of distress instantly streamed down.
"Phoebe, I swear I don't know what happened! Honestly…"
