Phoebe shot Gemma a scathing look, then turned sharply to Louis and demanded, "Is this the 'carefully chosen' gift you two picked out for your grandmother?"
Louis's eyes turned chillingly cold as he looked from the pearl pendant in Gemma's hand to Gemma herself.
"Louis, what's wrong with you? You know perfectly well that Grandma gets sick whenever she sees pearls. How could you still buy them for her? This time, even I can't help you." Joel chimed in.
Stunned by Joel's harsh words toward Louis, Gemma froze once more, her innocent, pleading gaze fixed on Louis.
Joel said bluntly, "When Grandma was young, before my dad was born, she had a daughter who died young after accidentally swallowing a pearl. Grandma blamed herself terribly and always felt responsible for her daughter's death. She had a complete breakdown back then, and though she got better over the years, she's never been able to bear the sight of pearls since. And yet today, you actually brought her a pearl pendant? Are you deliberately twisting the knife in her wound?"
After hearing Joel's explanation, Gemma frantically tried to defend herself:
"No, no... That's not it... I truly had no idea..."
"It was Georgia. She tricked me into buying the pearls!"
"Phoebe, Louis, you have to believe me! It was really Georgia! She was the one who tricked me into buying them..."
Finally, she'd walked right into Georgia's trap.
No wonder she handed over that pearl pendant so easily.
The most pathetic part was that, in that moment, she actually thought she had won against Georgia.
The more she thought about it, the angrier she got. 'How dare that scheming bitch set me up!'
Just then, Georgia slowly emerged from Elsie's bedroom.
She glared at Gemma and snapped, "Gemma, it was your pearls that triggered Grandma's attack, and now you're trying to pin the blame on me? Did I force you to buy those pearls?"
Hearing this, Gemma's eyes blazed with barely contained fury.
"Georgia, it was you! I heard you telling Lila this pearl pendant was perfect for Elise. That's why I..." Gemma abruptly cut herself off.
Georgia let out a soft laugh, her red lips curving mockingly.
"What? Why aren't you saying anything now?"
"It's fine. If you're too embarrassed to say it, I'll say it for you. You snatched this pendant from me at double the price, didn't you?"
"You thought the pearl pendant I was holding was for Elsie, so you deliberately took it from me, thinking that would win her approval."
"But what you didn't know is, this pendant wasn't for Elsie at all. It was for Lila's grandmother."
"Gemma, if you truly wanted to give Elsie a gift, you should have taken the time to find out what she actually likes, instead of being so sneaky and insincere!"
"Georgia, you set me up...!"
Gemma's lips trembled with fury as she pointed an accusing finger at Georgia, tears streaming down her face.
Georgia let out a mocking laugh. "Me? Set you up? Gemma, how can you even say that with a straight face?"
"Enough! Both of you, silence!" Phoebe's icy command cut through their argument.
She then turned to Gemma with a frosty glare and said, "Miss Kirkland, I suggest you leave now. And unless specifically invited, don't bother coming back to this house."
Hearing Phoebe's blunt dismissal, no matter how much Gemma wanted to curry favor with the Rathbone family, she could no longer bear the humiliation. Clutching her face, she suddenly bolted from the house.
Watching Gemma flee in tears, Louis's gaze darkened once more. He fixed an icy stare on Georgia, a mocking triumph playing at the corners of her lips.
Frozen by Louis's icy gaze that seemed to see right through everything, Georgia turned and slipped back into Elsie's bedroom, unable to meet his chilling stare.
