The hallway hummed with snarky digs at Georgia, but Noelle smirked, savoring the moment. 'Georgia, you think you're still hot stuff?
'With your rep in the dirt, you're delusional if you think you're bouncing back. Not while I'm around.'
Interviews started quick. Georgia waited calmly in the corridor as caregivers got called in one by one.
This was the job: ER caregiver at Saylor Hospital, the best gig out there. Thirty-plus applicants, only five spots.
Georgia wasn't dumb—she knew Noelle had this locked down to shut her out.
Her name rang out, and Georgia strutted into the room.
Besides Noelle and some medical staff, there sat Professor Edmond Cummings, a sketchy clinical "expert," and his assistant, Andrew Brown.
Edmond's dull eyes turned sleazy the second he saw Georgia.
Georgia dropped ER nursing know-how like a boss, smooth and sharp.
Andrew watched, gutted. 'She's a slam dunk—if this wasn't already rigged.'
When she finished, Edmond adjusted his glasses with a fake sigh. "Kids today, all talk, no game. For a real pro, check out our girl Noelle."
He waved lazily. "Bring everyone in. Let's show 'em how it's done."
"Noelle," he nodded, "work your magic."
Once the crowd packed in, Noelle flashed a smug grin, rolled out an ER crash cart, and ran a demo.
A minute later, the room blew up with applause.
Edmond clapped like he'd seen a Super Bowl touchdown. "Killed it! That was smooth as butter!"
"See that?" he crowed. "That's Saylor Hospital's queen. Take notes, people."
Georgia barely stopped herself from gagging. 'Killed it? Three years, and Noelle's still stuck in neutral.'
"Georgia, tough break, but you didn't cut it," Edmond said, dripping with fake sympathy. "Still, I'd love to see you again, Ms. Murray."
His eyes crawled over her, gross and bold. Three years ago, he'd drooled from a safe distance. Now? He thought she was desperate.
Georgia saw it coming. She flashed a frosty smirk, nodded politely, and walked out.
Noelle watched, thrown off. 'Why's she so chill? It's like she doesn't care.' It was like punching a cloud.
Minutes after leaving, Georgia's phone buzzed with an unknown number. She raised a brow and answered.
"Ms. Murray, it's Professor Cummings," oozed Raymond's slimy voice. "You know, from earlier?"
"Professor Cummings," she said, ice-cold. "What do you want?"
"Look, I saw you today. Life's been rough since that divorce screwed you over, huh? A pretty thing like you? Roll with me, and I'll hook you up at the hospital. Plus, I can… y'know, take care of you."
Georgia's lips curled into a mocking grin. "Hard pass, sir. I don't mess with crusty old pervs. Try again."
"What—" Raymond's voice turned nasty. "Don't play coy. I'm your shot at a comeback. Louis was young and loaded, but he left you with zilch, didn't he?"
Georgia hung up mid-tantrum. 'Gotta move faster,' she thought. 'Can't let these clowns think I'm down and out.'
It was nearly noon, time to meet Lila for lunch.
Georgia walked into the diner, spotting Lila waving from a booth.
Before Georgia could sit, Lila unloaded. "Girl, I heard about that interview! What's your deal? There's a ton of hospitals out there, and you're still chasing Saylor Hospital? It's not what it used to be. It's all who you know now, not what you can do."
Lila leaned in, fuming. "And Noelle? That two-faced snake! You bailed her out when she was drowning in debt. You taught her that fancy Art of 24 Needles yourself.
"And she has the nerve to hold a press conference claiming she invented it? Then she shacks up with that old creep Edmond and gets hailed as some medical goddess? Total BS!"
"If I'd been there, I'd have chewed her out," Lila growled, slamming her glass down.
Georgia smiled, cool as ever. "Lila, you're killing it at the Health Authority. Don't jump into my mess."
"But Edmond screwed you over! What's next?"
Georgia's eyes twinkled. "Waiting on a call."
ila blinked. "A call? You think Noelle's gonna play nice and invite you back?"
Georgia just smirked, sipping her juice.
Lila shook her head. 'She used to be so easy to read, but now? She's a damn mystery.'
"Oh, wait," Lila added. "There's a big medical conference next month, on the 10th. I'm working every angle to get you a spot. You'd crush the finals and clear your name. I'll fight like hell to get you in."
Georgia laughed softly. "No need, Lila. I'm already in the finals."
Lila choked on her juice, staring at Georgia's calm smirk. "You're what? The finals?!"
Georgia nodded, and Lila cackled, smacking the table. "You sly little rockstar! Still pulling surprises!"
"With that conference locked in, who needs that dumb interview?" Lila grinned. "Go wreck 'em, girl!"
Georgia sipped her juice, a cunning glint in her eye. 'This interview? It's not over by a long shot.'
