She had always known she was Samuel's one true love and the one he could never forget. Whenever she wanted something, Samuel would drop everything to make it happen for her.
Whenever he was around her, Samuel would move heaven and earth to please her.
This was the first time Gemma had seen Samuel so distant and distracted.
'Is it because the news about my engagement to Louis went viral online these days?'
That couldn't be it. The news about her engagement to Louis had been out for age. There was no way Samuel's only just finding out now.
After all, he had personally vowed that whether or not she married, she would forever remain the goddess he would always worship.
Under the pretense of fetching academic materials, Gemma stepped out of the office.
After stepping out of the office, Gemma immediately called Samuel's assistant.
"Welly, where did Mr. Maxwell go before returning to the hospital?"
Welly said, "Dr. Kirkland, Mr. Maxwell said he went to the sanatorium to pick up the medical staff for you, but he ended up coming back alone."
"After he got back, he asked me to look into any connection between the Kirkland family and the Crawford family..."
"The Crawfords?" Gemma blurted out.
'What connection could my family possibly have with the Crawfords? If we really did, that would be a dream come true. They're in a league we could never hope to reach,' Gemma thought to herself.
After hanging up, Gemma returned to her office, her expression growing somber.
Seeing Samuel was still preoccupied, Gemma didn't bother engaging him further. Instead, she shot her assistant a meaningful glance.
Catching her cue, the assistant put on a professional smile and turned to Samuel.
"Mr. Maxwell, Dr. Kirkland's surgery is scheduled to begin in two days. Are all the medical staff you arranged for her in place?"
A pang of self-reproach struck Samuel. 'How could I have forgotten something so crucial when visiting the sanatorium?'
.With a guilty glance at Gemma, who remained perfectly composed, Samuel answered weakly, "They're short-staffed over there too, Gemma. You already have over twenty medical staff. Isn't that enough?"
Upon hearing this, Gemma maintained her poised, graceful smile, but inside she was absolutely fuming.
She sent him to snatch someone from Georgia team as a show of power. She wanted Georgia to understand that anything she set her sights on, Georgia would have no choice but to hand over obediently.
But, instead of putting Georgia in her place, she had only ended up upsetting herself.
This was the first time Samuel had ever turned her down. Gemma never imagined he would actually refuse her, and for a split second, a wave of sheer panic washed over her.
Though Gemma was seething inside, she maintained a calm, composed smile.
"True," she said smoothly, "My medical team is one of the top in the country. You may leave now."
Gemma deliberately put on a poised and gracious act in front of Samuel, aiming to dispel the disappointment she had just seen in his eyes.
Sure enough, seeing Gemma so graceful and understanding, Samuel felt another pang of guilt.
"Gemma, I'm so sorry!" Samuel said, his apology heartfelt and sincere.
'He still treats me differently,' she thought smugly, though she put on a show of concern.
"I noticed you skipped breakfast again this morning. Is your stomach acting up? I had my assistant get you some breakfast, did you eat it yet?"
Seeing Gemma still caring for him, Samuel couldn't help but see her as the radiant little girl from his childhood.
"Gemma," he asked softly, "Could you make me that special herbal porridge you used to make when we were kids?"
