Teresa gave Benny a sharp glare. "You're so annoying. Just leave already."
Benny chuckled, unfazed by her glare. By then, Jennifer had stepped out of the car, catching his attention. His gaze shifted to her as she stood next to Teresa. "And who's this lovely lady? Did you get the new car for her?" asked Benny.
"She's my sister," Teresa replied.
Benny raised an eyebrow, clearly surprised. "I thought you were an only child."
Teresa gave him a light shove, clearly not wanting to elaborate. "All right, just go. Thanks for the help today. I'll treat you to dinner sometime."
Furrowing his brows, Benny glanced back at Jennifer several times before finally leaving. Once he was gone, Teresa handed the car keys to Jennifer.
"Hannah," Teresa said, smiling at her. "You can drive this to work from now on. Don't argue; it's yours now. I'll even get you a better one—"
Before she could finish, Jennifer narrowed her eyes and jabbed her finger at Teresa's forehead. "Are you trying to make me mad? I was planning to get a second-hand car, and now you pull this on me? I don't want it! Tell your friend to return it."
Jennifer shoved the keys back into Teresa's hand.
Teresa sighed. "Hannah, some things are worth spending money on, and over 100 thousand dollars isn't that much."
Jennifer shot back, "Not much? You've been struggling financially since your divorce because you never plan ahead. You're always splurging—no wonder you can't save a dime!"
Teresa took a deep breath, her eyes briefly flickering away. "I'm sorry," she said, her voice softening. She was stung by Jennifer's harsh words. She'd only wanted to help her long-lost sister in the best way she knew.
Jennifer sighed, her expression softening. "Teresa, I'm not blaming you. I know you meant well. It's just... after all these years, I've gotten used to being frugal."
"I know," Teresa said, emotion creeping into her voice. "That's why I wanted to do this for you. I've already bought it, so please, just keep it."
Jennifer hesitated before relenting and giving Teresa a warning look. "Fine, but don't do this again. No more buying me things."
When they arrived home, Michael ran over from the balcony, holding a pair of binoculars. "Mommy! Mommy! I saw it all! Who was that guy you were talking to?"
Teresa replied, "That was Benny."
Michael's eyes widened. He said, "So that's him! I didn't think he'd be so good-looking."
Teresa shrugged nonchalantly. "Yeah, he's all right. A little handsome, I guess."
After helping Jennifer settle in, Teresa moved the rest of her things with Michael's help. She then handed back the rent money Jennifer had tried to give her.
"This house was left to me by Grandpa and Grandma," Teresa said softly. "If they knew you were alive, they'd be over the moon. From now on, we're family. No need to act like a guest."
Jennifer smiled. "Okay, but while I'm staying here and recovering, I'll come up with some recipes and cook delicious meals for everyone."
Teresa chuckled and shook her head. "You don't have to do that. Just focus on recovering."
Jennifer crossed her arms. "I can't just sit around doing nothing all day. That's worse for me."
Teresa sighed, saying nothing more.
Later, Teresa decided to visit Evelyn, unsure if she had been discharged from the hospital yet. Jennifer declined to join her.
"All right, I'll go alone," Teresa said. "She doesn't have anyone to look after her."
"Just don't mention me to her," Jennifer replied.
Teresa nodded. Leaving Michael at home with Jennifer, she headed out. Meanwhile, Jennifer was in the kitchen, preparing a meal for him.
"Aunt Hannah, your cooking keeps getting better!" Michael exclaimed. "When Mr. Lime gets back from his trip, you two should have a cook-off to see who's the best!"
Jennifer gave a faint smile. "Mike, do you really like Mr. Lime that much?"
Michael nodded, his eyes sparkling. "Mommy says she likes him too, but she also says that liking someone doesn't mean they'll end up together. But I really hope they do."
Jennifer's smile faded, and her tone turned serious. "Mike, if you had to choose between your mom and Mr. Lime, who would you pick?" she asked.
Without hesitation, Michael answered, "Of course, Mommy! Mommy only has me. I can't leave her."
Jennifer reached out and gently pinched his cheek. "That's the right answer. You're such a good boy. Be there for your mom. She works so hard to take care of you. If you ever left her, it would break her heart. And as for Mr. Lime..."
She paused, her voice soft but firm. "Forget about him. He's not part of our family. You've got your mom, and you've got me. The three of us will take care of each other."
Michael nodded, but a hint of sadness crossed his face. Jennifer noticed it and sighed inwardly. It was better to rip off the band-aid now. She was doing it for Teresa and Michael's sake.
Jennifer said gently, "Mike, you should tell your mom that you want to move to another city. Let her know you want us to start fresh somewhere else."
"Why?" Michael tilted his head, confused. "But I really like it here."
Jennifer gave him a thoughtful look. "What's so great about this place? The winters are freezing, and the summers are unbearably hot. Wouldn't it be nice to live somewhere warmer?"
Michael's eyes lit up with understanding. He said, "Oh, I get it! Like birds flying south for the winter and coming back in the spring."
Jennifer ruffled his hair and shook her head. "Not exactly. We're not like birds. Once we leave, we're not coming back."
