Teresa wanted to refuse. She couldn't stand the bitter taste of the traditional medicine. But Jonathan had already shown her his schedule and booked an appointment with the doctor Benny recommended. "My mom's getting discharged Friday, so I'm busy," she said.
"I'm talking about the weekend, not Friday. You think you can handle it all by yourself? I'll send my driver to pick you and your mom up on the discharge day," Jonathan replied.
"No need. I'll drive, and Jennifer's coming too," Teresa insisted.
Seeing her firm stance, Jonathan decided not to push further. After all, the last thing he wanted was to stir up more trouble with Jennifer.
When they arrived at Rosary Estates, Teresa's movement as she carried the child out of the car woke him. Michael rubbed his sleepy eyes and mumbled softly, "Mommy."
Teresa froze for a second. Jonathan, already out of the car, stopped in his tracks. He glanced back at the kid, his brow arching slightly, curiosity flickering in his eyes.
Quickly regaining her composure, Teresa said softly, "You must still be sleepy. I'm not your mommy, remember? Your mom's not back yet."
Michael seemed to understand something. He rubbed his eyes again and stayed quiet.
Jonathan didn't dwell on it. Like Teresa, he figured Michael was just groggy from sleep. 'Poor kid, always being left with others. No wonder he misses his mom so much,' he wondered.
"Whoa, look who's here." Benny's voice rang out as his car pulled into Rosary Estates. He parked quickly and hopped out.
"Ah, it's Bunny." Michael clung tightly to Teresa, eyeing Benny warily. Benny finally noticed the child.
Even though Benny wasn't great at recognizing faces, those eyes and the words suddenly reminded him of the little boy he'd bumped into on his way back from the hospital.
"It's you, boy. Bunny? Where is it?" Benny asked, looking around.
Jonathan, equally curious, turned to look as well. The two grown men scanned the area but found no sign of a bunny.
Michael pointed at Benny. "It's you. Mr. Bunny. I thought you'd be a chubby bandit bunny, but you're actually a tall, skinny, cool bunny."
Benny burst out laughing, clearly entertained. Seeing the confusion on Benny and Jonathan's faces, Teresa finally explained, "Benny sounded like Bunny, so that's what Michael calls him."
"Oh, so I'm the Bunny? That's interesting. But who's this kid? And how does he know my name?" Benny asked, his curiosity piqued.
"He's my colleague's child, staying at my place for a while. I have no idea how he knows your name," Teresa replied calmly.
"Interesting," Benny said, though a playful glint flashed in his narrow eyes. "Your colleague's kid, huh? Funny, he's got Jonathan's eyes and maybe even a little of you, Teresa."
"Are you blind? You can't even tell roses from lilies, and now you're saying this kid's mine? Hey, not a chance," she teased.
Benny stared at Teresa for a moment, then shifted his gaze to Jonathan, who remained calm and expressionless, as if the child had absolutely nothing to do with him.
Benny was a bit stunned. 'Wait, could it really be true that this kid wasn't Teresa and Jonathan's?' he wondered.
Jonathan broke the silence, asking, "What are you doing here? Got nothing better to do than poke your nose into my business?"
"I was driving back after a haircut and saw your car at the Riverbuss Road intersection. I wondered what you are doing at Rosary Estates. So I came to check it out. Who knew I'd run into your son?"
"He's not my son," Jonathan corrected.
"Alright, fine, not your kid. My mistake," Benny smiled.
"You two keep chatting. I'll take the kid upstairs. Thanks for giving us a ride today." Not wanting to dig herself into a deeper hole, Teresa quickly turned to leave with Michael in her arms.
