Teresa and Jonathan were in Chicoham when the guy from the photo suddenly grabbed Jonathan's hand. He said Jonathan was his idol, took a photo with him, and even bought all their roses.
At first, the guy wanted to take a photo with Teresa. He even tried to put his arm around her shoulder, but Jonathan, totally jealous, shoved him away.
He seemed just like a random guy, but Teresa stared at the document Irene had handed her, her expression darkening.
The guy was a total scumbag with a criminal record. He'd done time for fraud and even got locked up a few years back for assaulting a woman.
But when the photo was taken, Teresa had no clue about his past. Jonathan probably didn't know either. He wouldn't have let himself be in a photo with a criminal if he had known.
"You've really ruined my son. If that photo leaks, people will think the CEO of Horizonlead Group is buddy-buddy with a criminal.
"In this day and age, where rumors spread faster than wildfire, what do you think the public will think of him? You're practically destroying his future." Irene's voice was like a knife.
"Who sent it to you?" Teresa asked urgently. At this moment, she was even more anxious than Irene, desperate to protect Jonathan's reputation.
"If I had known, do you think I'd be sitting here talking to you?" Irene snapped, not even sparing Teresa a glance. 'Troublemaker, that's all you are. A curse in my son's life,' Irene thought.
Irene had always prided herself on her judgment of people, and Teresa had never passed the test. 'Three years ago, she was a burden, and three years later, nothing has changed. She's still dragging Jonathan down,' Irene thought to herself.
"If it weren't for you, my son's path would've been so much smoother." Irene's words echoed from three years ago. Back then, the divorce had seemed like a relief for everyone involved.
But who could've guessed that Jonathan would come back to Nareigh and get tangled up with Teresa all over again? It was enough to drive Irene up the wall.
"I even asked his assistant about his schedule those days. He was with you the whole time, off in Chicoham and ignoring his work. It's like he owes you from a past life or something, falling all over himself for you." Irene's frustration was clear as day.
Teresa didn't respond. She quietly finished reading through the document. "If the person behind this was targeting Jonathan, they would've leaked the photo by now. Sending it to you instead makes it clear—they're after me. They'll definitely reach out to me, and I'll be waiting."
"Waiting? Are you sure about that?" Irene's skepticism was evident.
"In three days, they'll get in touch with me. If anything pops up, I'll let you know." With that, Teresa reached for the car door, ready to head out.
"Hold on a sec," Irene called out. "Teresa, I'm only saying this because we used to be family. Stay away from my son and stop dragging him down. If he gets hurt because of you, I won't let it go."
Teresa froze. Without a word, she slammed the car door shut and stormed off.
Back home, Teresa leaned against the door, her fingers gently massaging her temples. Her eyes were clouded with guilt and self-blame. The calm and pride she'd put on in front of Irene had been just a mask.
"Mommy, what's wrong? Are you upset?" Michael's soft, sweet voice broke through her thoughts as he hugged her tightly.
Teresa put a hand on her forehead. "I hurt... I hurt a friend I care about because I wasn't careful. If only I'd been more careful... It's all my fault."
Michael kissed her cheek, his small arms wrapping around her. "Mommy, don't be sad. Just say sorry, and your friend will forgive you, okay?"
Teresa dropped her eyes, feeling her heart sink with every thought that crossed her mind. She'd dragged Jonathan into this mess, and the more she thought about it, the more it seemed like it had been done on purpose.
Whoever sent those photos to Irene and Evelyn had to know Teresa inside out—her personality, her habits. How else could they have timed everything so perfectly, like having a criminal show up to buy flowers from them?
It was like they could predict every move she made. Teresa couldn't stop overthinking it all.
Jonathan was nothing like her—he was a famous business legend, always careful with his words and actions, even when signing autographs. Yet, because of her, he had ended up in an unfamiliar city, dragged into unnecessary trouble. And now, he was paying the price for her recklessness.
If Jonathan's reputation were to suffer, potentially impacting his company's growth, Teresa would feel deeply guilty.
Just as Teresa was feeling lost and overwhelmed, her phone rang. She glanced at the screen—it was Miriam calling. Miriam explained that Sherry had just returned from her hometown. Since Sherry couldn't reach Teresa, she had called Miriam instead.
Sherry had flown back alone; Christian hadn't come with her.
Teresa had just lied to Jonathan, saying Michael's mom had come to pick him up, and as if fate were playing tricks, Sherry actually showed up.
Teresa went to Miriam's house but left Michael at home, promising she'd be right back. As always, Michael leaned against the window, his little face pressed to the glass as he watched Teresa's car disappear down the road.
As usual, Michael leaned against the window, his little face pressed to the glass as he watched Teresa's car disappear down the road.
"Mommy, I wish I had a little brother or sister," Michael mumbled to himself, his small hands resting on the windowpane, his voice soft and filled with longing.
Sherry stayed in her hometown for quite a while. She was doing okay, but her stay had been stretched out because of the mess in Christian's family.
Christian's father died of advanced-stage lung cancer around Christmas, and he had to rush back home. It delayed his return to Nareigh. To be on the safe side, Christian took his mom to a tertiary hospital for a full checkup.
Even though his mom didn't want to spend the money, Christian was firm about it. During the checkup, they found out she had breast cancer. The good news was that they caught it early, and they scheduled her for surgery right away.
All this stuff was really weighing on Christian. He'd always been super disciplined, working as a CEO's secretary after college.
His plan was to save up enough cash to go back to his hometown and take care of his parents. But life had other ideas—his dad passed away before he could even enjoy a family reunion.
