Truman rubbed the back of his neck awkwardly. "I just hope you can understand."
"Understand?" Teresa admitted to misfortune. "I have plenty of contacts, but fewer than ten can see all my Facebook updates. You were one of them. I misjudged you. It was my fault for being so trusting and sharing my location. What an idiot I was."
There was some guilt added in Truman's eyes. He said, "I'm sorry. I don't know what to say. I'm not defending myself, but I've told Simona countless times to move on, but now she is fixated on your ex-husband.
"I owe her, so if this is what she wants, I have to go along with it."
Teresa listened quietly as Truman spoke and suddenly felt he was seriously creepy.
She wondered, 'You have to go along with it if this is what she wants? What if Simona asks you to commit murder or arson? Will you go along with that too?'
Teresa claimed, "I must have been crazy about coming to you for therapy. Honestly, the one who needs it the most is you, Truman."
Truman's previously calm expression darkened instantly, as if her words had struck a nerve.
Teresa drove off. She kept driving, far, far away, until she finally arrived at the company.
When an employee greeted her, Teresa responded with a faint smile and headed straight to her office. Once inside, the smile vanished from her face. She opened a drawer, revealing a ring that gleamed under the light.
Her mind wandered back to the past, to one of those fights with Jonathan after they got married. Back then, in a fit of anger, she had grabbed his hand, yanked off his wedding ring, and thrown it into the river.
"Jonathan, marrying you was my biggest regret," she had claimed.
The ring hit the water and disappeared into the river.
With his eyes burned with anger, Jonathan clenched his fists, but he said nothing and stormed off in the end.
The moment Teresa threw his ring, she regretted it. She alone had waded into the icy river, searching for hours until her legs and hands were numb from the cold. Finally, she found the ring.
That night, Jonathan had called her. "Where are you? Why aren't you home yet?"
"I'm at Miriam's place. I don't want to see you. Go spend time with Yvonne and your mother," Teresa had snapped.
"You're out of all reason. Fine. You just stay at Miriam's place forever," Jonathan had retorted.
Actually, Teresa didn't go to Miriam's. Having gotten soaked to the bone from retrieving the ring, she didn't want Miriam to worry about her or mock her. That night, she stayed at a nearby motel.
The next morning, Teresa took off her own wedding ring and placed it alongside his. She even considered selling them. After all, diamonds didn't hold much value recently, while gold would be a smarter choice.
When she returned home, Jonathan's face was pale for some reason. He stared at her and asked, "Where's your wedding ring?"
She stubbornly lied, saying that she had thrown hers away too.
"Teresa, you're so ruthless," Jonathan said before leaving, coughing as he went.
That night, Jonathan didn't come home, and Teresa didn't care. She curled up at home with a cold, not caring about where he went at all.
After that, she had never worn her wedding ring again. Neither had she told Jonathan that she had retrieved his ring from the river long ago.
When they divorced, she didn't take anything.
Nevertheless, she kept those two rings till now. They became symbols of their failed marriage, a constant reminder that love and marriage were unreliable.
Teresa's thoughts snapped back to reality, and she collapsed onto her desk, with her sobs shaking her entire body.
Jennifer had been searching for Teresa everywhere. When she finally pushed open the office door and saw Teresa, Jennifer let out a sigh of relief. But the sight of Teresa crying made her chest tighten with a mix of guilt and unease.
Jennifer wondered, 'Is it because I pressured her into abortion?'
When Teresa looked up and saw Jennifer, Teresa frowned, clearly uncomfortable with being caught in such a vulnerable moment. She hastily wiped her tears away, trying to compose herself.
"Jennifer, why didn't you knock before entering my office?" Teresa asked.
"I was worried sick. Didn't we agree you'd go to Miriam's to deal with your friend? You never went, and you weren't answering your phone," Jennifer said.
"I had my phone muted," Teresa muttered, clearly uninterested in going to Miriam's place because of what had happened. "So, what did you tell Benny?"
"I had Miriam and Sherry put on an act. Sherry pretended to be Miriam's cousin, and Mike was introduced as her son," Jennifer explained.
"Did he buy it?" Teresa asked. "Benny is sharp. He might not believe it."
"What else can we do? We're leaving anyway. I've started wrapping up my work at the hospital. Let's leave by the end of the month," Jennifer said.
"Alright," Teresa agreed. "I was just about to tell you the same thing."
With over a week left until the end of the month, Teresa thought about finishing her work at hand.
She wondered if Jonathan would return from his business trip by then, but she wouldn't ask him. She guessed he'd figure it out when he realized that she had gone.
Seeing that Jennifer was still standing there, Teresa stood up and said, "I'll book the air tickets now. Is there anything else?"
Jennifer pressed her lips together and said, "We need to talk calmly, about the baby you're carrying."
