The screech of brakes pierced the air as Donald made a desperate, last-second turn. The car slammed into the guardrail with a thunderous crash, the windshield shattering into a jagged, concave mess. The hood crumpled and flipped open from the impact.
Jennifer's body lurched forward, only to be yanked back by the seatbelt. As her mind cleared, she realized that Donald had instinctively shielded her, taking the brunt of the collision to protect her.
Jennifer called out, "Donald! Wake up! Please, wake up!" Donald remained unresponsive, his head slumped against the seat. Trembling, Jennifer reached out and touched the blood trickling from his forehead. The warm, sticky liquid stained her fingers red.
Jennifer forced herself to take a deep, steadying breath. She couldn't afford to lose her composure. Her hands trembled as she fumbled with the car door, finally managing to push it open and step out into the chaos.
Just then, the piercing headlights of a black Audi A8 cut through the foggy weather as it slowly came to a stop, hazard lights blinking. Jonathan stepped out of the car.
Seeing Jonathan, Jennifer forgot all past grievances. She cried, "Please, help me! It's all my fault. Donald can't be in danger, he just can't!"
Jonathan glanced at the car that had crashed into the guardrail. When he saw Donald slumped in the passenger seat, he seemed to piece things together. He pulled Donald out of the passenger seat and carried him to his car.
Jennifer had already climbed into Jonathan's car. Just as Jonathan was about to start the engine, he suddenly noticed the elderly man trembling by the roadside. He exclaimed, "Grandpa, what are you doing here in Nareigh?"
Hearing Jonathan's voice, Gordon slowly turned around. His sunken eyes locked onto Jonathan, and he clung tightly to Jonathan's arm. He said, "Fiona. Have you seen my Fiona? Where is she?"
Jonathan said, "Grandpa, just get in the car first."
"You're trying to take me back, aren't you? I'm not going back. I need to find Fiona," Gordon cried out, pounding on Jonathan's arm.
Worried about Donald's condition, Jonathan snapped, "Grandpa, I'll help you find Fiona, but you need to get in the car first. Please!"
Finally, Gordon climbed into the car.
Jonathan drove toward the hospital with all three passengers in the car.
Donald, still unconscious, was placed on a stretcher. Jennifer followed closely, almost running, until Donald was wheeled into the operating room. As the doors slowly closed, an overwhelming sense of helplessness washed over Jennifer.
Jonathan leaned against the window, talking on the phone to someone. Meanwhile, Gordon kept hitting Jonathan, angrily calling Jonathan a liar and demanding to know where Fiona was.
Jonathan let Gordon strike him without resistance. He looked down and found that Gordon's shoes were on the wrong path. After finishing his call, Jonathan crouched down and carefully fixed the shoes for Gordon.
With his shoulders slumped, Jonathan endured another round of blows from Gordon. Yet, he remained silent, quietly bearing it all.
Jennifer witnessed the entire scene. For a fleeting moment, she thought, 'Jonathan seems like a good man. In a world full of pretense and superficiality, it is rare to see such genuine filial devotion.
'No. If he were a good man, Teresa's marriage wouldn't have fallen apart.'
Heidi arrived shortly after and told Jonathan that Irene was on her way. Jonathan handed Gordon over to Heidi, finally able to catch his breath.
Jennifer walked up to Jonathan and said, "Thank you for saving Donald."
Jonathan frowned and said, "Today is the anniversary of Teresa's grandparents' passing. I thought she'd come back."
Jennifer said firmly, "She's not coming back. Stop bothering Teresa. It's time for both of you to move on."
Jonathan's expression darkened. He said, "Maybe the men in the Lynn family are just too stubborn. Donald's like that, and so am I."
