The moment Teresa finished speaking, there was a sharp slap. Then Jennifer snapped back to reality—she'd lost control and actually slapped Teresa across the face.
Jennifer had never hit her. Teresa's hand also flew up, trembling with the urge to hit back.
Jennifer stared at Teresa in disbelief. "Are you really going to hit me back?"
Teresa took a deep breath, eyes locked on Jennifer. After a tense moment, she finally lowered her hand. "Move. Don't block my way," she said coldly, then turned to leave.
Jennifer stood frozen for a moment, then rushed after Teresa and caught her at the corner.
"Teresa, I lost my temper just now. I shouldn't have hit you, but you provoked me. You know how hard it's been for me, how much I've struggled. I'm your sister, your family. How could you talk to me like that, even push me?"
Jennifer had been raised by Genevieve after being adopted. Genevieve was strict about her manners. Teresa's behavior just now made her feel rude, which was why she lost control and hit her.
Teresa turned around with a cold laugh. "So, what have I said wrong? What have you actually achieved on your own, Jennifer? If you were half as capable as you pretend, you'd have been in Shaville and made a name for yourself. I'd respect you then.
"But you're the one who said you wouldn't leave, told me to go, and then asked me back. Now you're enjoying all the perks at Nareigh, but none of it is because of your own effort. You want my respect? No way."
Jennifer's temper flared as she let go of Teresa. "Oh, you've got some nerve calling me out. How do you think Teresouth Group got started? Your ex-husband didn't help at all, is that it?"
Teresa shot back, "He definitely helped me a lot, and I've never tried to hide that. But I always thought you were so amazing, Jennifer. Turns out you had to ask Donald for money just to buy a house."
Jennifer's brows knitted together. "What do you mean, I asked him for money? He gave it to me on his own, and I told him I'd pay him back, even if it takes a while."
"Oh, sure, you'll pay him back. Funny, because Donald's mom already called me, saying he bought you a house before you two even got married. If it weren't for that, Donald could've bought himself a better car instead of settling for an Audi A7."
Jennifer finally pieced together—why Teresa was so upset. First, Sanford proposed to her, for reasons no one could figure out.
Second, Teresa found out Donald paid for Jennifer's house, and it was Cathy who spilled the beans. But she didn't know how Donald's parents found out. There was no way Donald would've told them himself.
Jennifer snapped back to her senses. "Sanford proposed to you? I had no idea. I'll ask him about it later.
"And I didn't know Cathy would call you. I don't want anyone looking down on me—I do have my pride. I'll pay Donald back right away, okay?"
"Fine," Teresa shot back. "Evelyn gave you about 295 thousand dollars—just in time to pay back your future husband. Talk about perfect timing."
"Have you said enough? Do you have to keep tearing me down like this? I'm your sister. Could you be kind to me?"
"So, besides relying on others, what else can you do? Tell me, what are you actually good at?"
"Huh? Who do you think I did all that for?" Jennifer shouted.
Teresa didn't back down. Jennifer was furious, but Teresa was just as mad—years of pent-up anger and resentment finally boiling over.
She pulled out her phone right in front of Jennifer and questioned, "You wanna settle accounts with me right now? Go ahead, now!"
