Donald grew serious. He said, "Jennifer is your sister-in-law. You shouldn't treat her like that. It's not right."
Cheryl snapped, "What did I do wrong? Jennifer has only been married to you for a few days, but she accused Dad of cheating and made Mom paranoid and suspicious. Is she satisfied now? Is she happy seeing our perfectly good family fall apart?"
Donald said, "Jennifer just speaks her mind. She doesn't mean any harm."
Cheryl talked back, "She means no harm? Of all the people I know, she is the most selfish, cold-hearted, self-righteous, self-centered, calculating, mean, and sharp-tongued—"
Before Cheryl could finish her words, Donald cut in and said, "Stop it. None of that applies to Jennifer."
Cheryl retorted, "What? Are you seriously saying she's not selfish and cold-hearted?"
"Everyone is selfish. Don't act like you're above it all." Donald still sided with Jennifer. "Jennifer had a tough childhood. She is just guarded, and we should try to understand her."
Cheryl shot back, "Don't you dare guilt-trip me, Donald. Why should I understand her? In my book, Jennifer isn't even fit to be my sister-in-law. Selfishness doesn't give her the right to hurt others."
Donald snapped, "That's enough. You're completely off track now. Who exactly has Jennifer hurt?"
Cheryl said, "Her actions are tearing our family apart. If she really causes our family to break up, what are you going to do then, Donald?"
"It won't happen," Donald said, giving Cheryl a reassuring pat on the shoulder. "See? Everything has settled now. Mom won't dwell on it anymore, and neither should you."
Cheryl said, "I'm not dwelling on it. I just want you to keep your guard up around Jennifer—"
Cheryl suddenly stopped.
At the very least, when Cheryl was giving birth, Jennifer knew exactly what she was going through, yet Jennifer still left her. Even when Cheryl fainted from heatstroke, Jennifer didn't save her.
Cheryl hadn't forgotten any of it. She had never accepted Jennifer as her sister-in-law.
The taxi arrived, and Cheryl got in.
Donald, still trying to play peacemaker, told her, "Don't misunderstand Jennifer. She's really not that kind of person. She is just straightforward and kind-hearted at heart."
Cheryl rolled her eyes and said, "Alright. Your wife is the kindest person. She is a perfect angel. Happy now?"
Donald replied, "Alright. Take care of yourself, and let me know if you need anything."
Donald watched as the taxi drove away. Only then did he finally step back inside the house.
Teresa hadn't slept well these past few days. Last night, she had a nightmare.
In her dream, everyone pointed at Michael, stared at him with strange, judgmental looks, and called him an illegitimate child. She also dreamed that Jennifer walked past her, fixed her with a condescending gaze, and said, "See? I told you so."
Teresa woke with a start and realized it was a nightmare.
The sun was shining brightly outside. She opened the curtains, but the light couldn't pierce the gloom in her heart.
It was already past eight when Teresa was on her way to the office. On the way, she unexpectedly spotted Jonathan's car as he inspected a nearby project site for Horizonlead Group.
Teresa bought a sandwich and a box of milk from a convenience store and was about to get into her car.
However, Jonathan had already stepped in front of her car door. He said, "I was hoping to run into you, and here you are."
Teresa replied coldly, "What for?"
Jonathan studied her face and raised his brows. "Did I do anything wrong again?"
"No, you didn't." Teresa finally glanced at him. "My hormones are all over the place, alright? Get away. I need to get to work."
Jonathan frowned. After Teresa opened the car door and got in, he swiftly settled into the passenger seat.
Teresa was confused. "What are you doing?"
Jonathan picked up the sandwich she had set aside and frowned. "This is no proper breakfast. Let me take you out for a real meal."
