Corey finally exhaled, the tension leaving his body. After instructing his secretary to book his flight, he headed straight for the airport. Halfway there, his phone rang - Jennie, impatient after getting no response to her messages.
"What do you want?" Corey snapped, his irritation palpable through the phone.
There was a beat of silence before Jennie's voice came through, trembling with fake hurt. "Corey? What's wrong with you? My wound's infected and Sebastian's swamped with work... I've got no one else to turn to." Her voice hitched with practiced sobs. "Are you busy? I-I can manage alone if-"
The unspoken plea hung in the air, the phone line still open. Old Corey would have U-turned immediately for her. New Corey just scowled. "See a doctor then. I'm not a medic. Got things to do." He moved to hang up.
"Corey!" Her voice turned sharp, then instantly sweetened with concern. "This isn't like you. Is this about Winona's return? Did she tell you something? I know she's grieving Aunt Edna, so if she's accusing me of faking my fall, just let it go. I'll apologize when-"
"Enough!" Corey's grip tightened on the wheel. "Stop dragging Winona into your drama. She's never said a word against you - unlike you, constantly whispering poison about her. That banquet was three years ago. What exactly do you want to hear? That Winona forgives you? That she admits to something she didn't do? You know damn well how you 'fell' that night."
His voice turned icy. "And clean up those online rumors. You've got three days. After that? Lose my number." He ended the call mid-protest, blocking her contact with satisfying finality.
The next morning, I was heading to a job interview when I spotted him outside my building. Snow dusted his jacket like powdered sugar - how long had he been waiting? Not my problem. I turned away.
"Winona!" He caught my arm, his travel-weary face pleading. "Please. I know I failed you. Just let me explain-"
I shook him off. "Explain what exactly?" My laugh was bitter. "That you didn't write that forgiveness letter? That the Swiss hotel wasn't for Jennie? That those monthly million-dollar transfers were for charity? I left to set you two lovebirds free. Why hunt me down now? Hoping to find me broken?"
He blanched, clearly unprepared for my knowledge of his files. "N-no, it wasn't like that! Jennie had no support overseas, I just didn't want her starving. The hotel was pure coincidence - I never thought she'd-"
His words dissolved into the winter air as I walked away, the snow crunching like bones under my boots. Some explanations come three years too late.
