I waited five long hours until the last office light flickered out. Only then did Corey finally emerge. The second he spotted me, he grabbed my hands, his voice thick with concern. "Why didn't you come inside? How long have you been out here?"
"Not long," I lied. "Just got here. I made you some meals—figured you'd be swamped. Your secretary said you were in meetings, so..."
"Don't ever do this again." He pulled me into that familiar embrace, lips brushing my forehead. His touch was gentle as ever, but the warmth was gone. How far would someone go for a lie?
As he helped me into the car, he dropped the casual bomb: "Jennie's getting out soon. You two were close once, and she's paid her dues. Plus, the Sterlings are key partners now, so maybe—"
"It's fine." I cut him off, staring at passing streetlights. "Ancient history. I won't cause trouble."
The relief in his exhale was palpable. "You're amazing, you know that? God, I'm lucky to have you."
I turned toward the window, silent tears cutting tracks down my cheeks.
Home. Shower sounds. His laptop blinked at me.
Password? Jennie's birthday.
The desktop wallpaper—Maldives. Where she'd been "exiled" for three years.
His socials? Single follow: Jennie. Profile pic: them together. Bio: "Waiting."
I'd once asked about that word. "Just random," he'd shrugged. Now I knew.
Bank records spilled across the screen like poison—$1M transfers. Monthly. For three years.
The jewelry in her posts? Gail Corp's line. That villa she tagged? Our only overseas property—built the month she left.
Our wedding photo hung alone on the wall. No other pictures existed. "We see each other every day," he'd say whenever I begged for keepsakes. Now I understood—I wasn't worth remembering.
Three clicks. A one-way ticket booked. Three days to erase three years. I set the countdown as my lockscreen.
He emerged from the shower, mistaking my stillness for sleep. I stared at the ceiling until dawn.
My phone rang at first light. "Winona?" Corey's confusion crackled through. "Why's there a cancellation request for your—"
"Expired ID," I interrupted smoothly. "Just renewing. Don't you have that merger meeting?"
His arms wrapped around me, lips at my ear. "You're perfect. Marrying you was the best decision I ever made."
I smiled hollowly.
"Let me make it up to you. Big surprise tonight."
"I'll be waiting."
