He'd stop at nothing to keep me from going after Jennie. This three-year-long farce had to end. The second he walked out the door, I marched straight to cancel my ID card.
After filling out the paperwork, I went to see a lawyer. When I asked about the letter of understanding, he shrugged and said a family member's signature was legally binding—no take-backs. I didn't press further. Instead, I had him print two copies of a divorce agreement. With the papers in hand, I headed straight to Corey's company.
The moment I stepped inside, I caught snippets of hushed gossip.
"Isn't that Mrs. Gail? Rumor has it she just flew back from overseas. Look at her—no wonder she snagged Mr. Gail. Even I'm a little jealous."
"It's definitely her. That Hermès bag? Brand new, one of ten in the world. I saw Mr. Gail handpicking it in his office. He bought it just for her. So romantic…"
"You think that hotel abroad was built for her? They've been childhood sweethearts. Even soap operas wouldn't dare write a love story like theirs!"
By the time I reached the top-floor office, I could hear a familiar voice drifting through the door.
"These past three years… how have you been?"
"Honestly? Amazing. Waking up to the ocean every morning, breathing in freedom. I should thank you—if it weren't for you, I probably would've—"
"Don't. It's over. I know you never meant to hurt anyone. Helping you was helping myself."
Jennie's laugh was light, almost musical. "You haven't changed. If Winona knew you were secretly helping me, she'd throw a fit." She paused, feigning innocence. "This bag is too much. You should give it to Winona. If I take it, she might sue me again."
Classic Jennie—playing the victim while twisting the knife.
Three years ago, I'd exposed her as a murderer at our wedding, only to have the entire room turn on me, calling me petty and dramatic. Corey had been my saving grace back then. Now? He was the one shoving me into the fire.
A secretary swung the door open, nearly colliding with me as she rushed in with contracts. Corey's eyes widened. "Winona? When did you—? Don't overthink this. Jennie just got out. We were just catching up."
"Winona, long time no see," Jennie chirped, rising from her seat. She was draped in a brand-new couture piece from Gail Corporation's luxury line—flawless skin, glowing, like she'd spent the last three years at a spa, not behind bars.
I forced a smile, swallowing the bitterness. "It's nothing. I was shopping nearby and thought I'd drop by. Since you're busy, I'll head out."
Corey chased after me, babbling excuses. "Don't be like this. I was just asking how she held up in prison. She's a woman—it couldn't have been easy. It's been three years. Shouldn't we let go of the past? Weren't you the one who just said it's over?"
I almost laughed. He'd sacrificed our marriage to save Jennie, played this elaborate charade with me. Now that she was free, who was he performing for?
"You're right. It's over. Don't worry—I keep my word." I turned, flashing him a smile that didn't reach my eyes. "Go ahead. I'll wait for you at home."
