His shoulders visibly loosened as he waved his secretary over to personally see me out. Before I left, he casually reminded me about tomorrow night's banquet at the Sterlings' mansion—a grand celebration for Jennie's glorious return.
Of course, as the company's president, he had an image to uphold. Officially, Jennie had been studying abroad all this time. No one dared breathe a word about her stint behind bars.
I nodded, playing the dutiful wife, assuring him I'd keep my composure and not embarrass him in front of the elite crowd. Only then did the tension leave his expression as he dismissed me.
Back home, I yanked our wedding photo off the wall, methodically slicing it to ribbons with scissors before dumping the remains in the trash.
That night, Corey didn't come home. Instead, Jennie resurrected her long-dead social media with a post—a cozy candlelit dinner for two.
The man's face was cropped out, but his wrist wasn't. A pale band of skin stood out where a wedding ring should've been. Corey.
Just as she wanted, I hit like. Then I powered off my phone and started packing.
The next morning, Corey's secretary delivered my "banquet attire"—a dress from last season's reject pile.
By the time I arrived that evening, Sebastian had just wrapped up his speech, announcing Jennie's new role overseeing all collaborations between his company and Gail Corporation.
The room buzzed with envy. Two childhood sweethearts, both worshipping the ground she walks on. When I stepped in, the chatter died. Every pair of eyes locked onto me, hungry for drama.
Corey was too busy schmoozing to notice me. Jennie, ever the gracious hostess, swooped in, steering me toward the rooftop terrace.
The second we were alone, her mask slipped. Malice twisted her lips. "Winona, after all these years, you're still pathetic. Three years 'abroad'—thanks to your husband, I lived like royalty. Did you actually think he married you for love?" She leaned in, venom dripping. "Let me spell it out—if not for your lawsuit, he wouldn't have glanced your way. You're a joke."
Rage burned through me. My hand flew before I could stop it—crack—her cheek snapped to the side.
She smirked, stepping back—too deliberately—then tumbled down the stairs.
Screams erupted below.
Corey was the first to reach her, cradling her like shattered glass. When his eyes found me, they were pure fire. "Winona, what the hell is wrong with you? Jennie was trying to be kind! Why'd you push her?"
I stared back, voice icy. "Me causing trouble? Corey, don't you owe me the truth about what really happened?"
Panic flickered in his gaze. "What truth? She's paid for her mistakes! Nothing excuses this! Apologize. Now."
Before I could speak, Jennie was already sobbing into his chest. "Don't… blame Winona. It's my fault. If she hates me this much… maybe we should just stay away from each other. I don't want to make things harder for you."
My nails bit into my palms, drawing blood. As they walked off, tangled in each other's arms, I knew—we were done.
