The Sterling estate security tossed me out like yesterday's trash. Two agonizing hours later, my phone finally buzzed with Corey's message.
[Jennie just got discharged. She's still emotionally fragile, so cut her some slack. Making you apologize today was just theater for the Sterlings. I'll smooth everything over and come home tonight to make it right, okay? Remember that gift I promised you? Don't stay mad at me.]
The performance wasn't for the Sterlings - it never had been. For three years, Corey had been acting out this loving husband charade just for me. Well, the curtain was about to fall.
I sat waiting with the divorce papers until sunrise, but he never showed. Instead, my social media exploded with headlines: "Gail Corporation CEO Causes Hospital Scene for His Mistress."
Jennie barely had a scratch, yet Corey had mobilized an army of top specialists, dropping over a million dollars just to check her out. The paparazzi shots showed him cradling her like precious cargo, his eyes dripping with adoration - a look he'd never once given me.
At dawn, I finally called. He didn't even say hello before barking orders at his assistant.
"Sir, are you absolutely sure about transferring the overseas hotel to Mrs. Steinfeld? That's a billion-dollar loss. Please reconsider."
"No discussion. Do it. That's her compensation." I heard papers shuffling. "And draft new contracts giving Jennie half my company shares."
Only then did he notice my call. "Winona? Sorry to keep you waiting. I'll be home soon. Did you need something?"
I stared at the unsigned divorce papers. "Nothing important. You're clearly busy."
"Be a good girl and wait for me, okay?"
But I was done waiting. I signed the papers, packed my bags, and walked out.
At the police station, I requested a certain document - the smoking gun I'd suspected existed all along. After making copies, I overnighted it to Corey's office. With perfect timing, he'd receive it as my plane left the ground.
Twenty-four hours passed without either of us returning home. When my boarding alert chimed, his text finally came through.
[Winona, my assistant dropped off your gift. Why aren't you answering the door? Still giving me the silent treatment? Come on, be reasonable. I'm on my way.]
Meanwhile, Jennie's Instagram showed Corey spoon-feeding her hospital soup. I didn't respond. When the confirmation came that my IDs had been terminated, I erased every remnant of him from my existence.
Back at the hospital, Corey's secretary came sprinting in, waving the documents I'd sent. "Mr. Gail! Emergency! Your wife found the falsified records from three years ago! She's ghosted all my calls!"
His face went sheet-white. The game was over.
