It wasn’t the same as the beginning.
It wasn’t supposed to be.
This wasn’t the awkward tension of first glances, or the careful sidesteps of two people too afraid to speak the truth. No—this was different. Softer. Wiser.
Earned.
Jade sat across from Leah in the small café they used to pass by on their evening walks. The same one they never went into. The kind with scratched wooden tables, mismatched mugs, and windows fogged slightly from the rain outside.
They hadn’t said much since sitting down. But sometimes silence wasn’t distance. Sometimes it was grace.
Leah reached across the table, brushing her fingers against Jade’s hand. Jade didn’t flinch. She didn’t look away. She just smiled—small, tired, but real.
“I don’t want to go back,” Leah said finally. Her voice didn’t shake. “I don’t want to pretend nothing happened.”
Jade’s fingers curled gently around hers. “Good. Me neither.”
Leah exhaled. “But I do want to move forward. With you. If that’s still something you want.”
Jade looked down at their hands, then up again. Her eyes were clear. Grounded.
“I’ve always wanted that,” she said. “Even when it hurt. Even when we didn’t know how.”
They both smiled—quietly. As if they didn’t want to scare this moment away.
There had been pain. Distance. Words unsaid and words said too sharply. But they had made it through the storm. Not untouched. But unbroken.
And now, they were here. Not to erase the past—but to build something better from it.
Leah lifted her coffee. “To starting over?”
Jade clinked her mug gently against hers. “To starting over—without starting from scratch.”
Outside, the clouds began to part.
Inside, so did they.
