It’s been a little over thirty minutes since I, or rather, we, left the dungeon. The moment those words left Brian’s lips, everything in me froze, and I could not concentrate on questioning him further.
Raven, seeing my distress, followed me out, while Alec, Micah and Jason stayed behind. Alec had requested I wait in his office for him so we could discuss what to do with Brian.
I am still in his office waiting for him, while deep inside my insides are raging with a consuming panic and anxiety. Raven and I haven’t spoken. Each of us lost in our thoughts but probably thinking of the same thing.
It can’t all just be a coincidence. There is just no way I had a dream, probably a premonition of a woman with black wings killing me, and then it turns out that the person making hybrids has similar wings.
Just as I thought that, I remembered when Alec and I were attacked. Didn’t that hybrid say something along the lines of ‘She’ is going to kill me? At least now I know the 'She' he was referring to.
That alone cements the idea that it wasn’t just a dream, but a prediction. It’s too much to be a coincidence, and I refuse to believe that it is.
Unable to sit down any longer, I stand up and start pacing the room. My whole body is trembling as I think of all the things that could go wrong. The worst-case scenario is dying and if that happens, who is going to take care of Aspen? Should I leave her care to Raven and King or to her father, Alec?
I’ve never thought of dying. Never been faced with my own mortality, but after questioning Brian, it’s right there in my face. Taunting me. I am forced to face the fact that I may not be there to see Aspen growing up.
The more I thought about it, the more melancholy I became.
I stop in my tracks when the door opens, revealing Alec, then Micah and finally Jason.
My eyes follow him as he walks past me and sits down on his chair with a tired sigh. I witnessed him with Aspen today. I saw the love in his eyes. If things don’t go as planned, would it really be fair to leave Aspen with Raven instead of him?
“Do you mind telling me why you ran from the dungeon as if the fires of hell were after you?” his deep voice cuts through my thoughts and the panic that was surging inside me.
I shake my head to try and clear the depressing thoughts that were fighting for dominance inside.
“Something in what he said,” I murmur, not really sure whether to reveal everything to him or not.
He raises an eyebrow, probably wondering what Brian could have said to get me running with my tail tucked between my legs.
“Care to elaborate?” he leans forward on his desk, his eyes expressing his interest.
We are in a staring contest as I think it over and as he challenges me. Eventually, I decide to tell him everything. After all, there really is no need to hide it.
“I had what I think is a premonition,” I started slowly. “I know it sounds totally crazy, but after considering everything, I am more than sure that I wasn’t just a dream.”
Micah, who was leaning against a wall, pushes himself off it before he drops on the couch right next to Raven.
“Honestly” he begins “I don’t think it’s as farfetched as you make it seem. We have seen crazier staff these past few weeks.”
Jason, who was quiet, joins. “Yeah. The existence of hybrids to start with, and I mean, you have wings for goddesses’ sake. That’s the craziest shit I’ve seen in my entire life.”
I only smile because he is right. Having wings is crazy.
Jason continues, making me question more of who I am. “You are a werewolf, but that’s not the only thing you are. So, what exactly are you?”
I pause, because honestly, I have never thought about it. I am something more. I just don’t know what the ‘more’ is.
“I’m not sure,” I answer him truthfully.
Jason goes to speak, but Alec cuts him off. “We are going off-topic.”
“Right,” I reply awkwardly while facing him.
“Back to the premonition you had.”
“Well, I thought it was a dream until Raven made me realize that it might just be a premonition,” I tell them. “I couldn’t see her face, but I knew her.”
“Okaaay,” Jason drags the words, seeming confused by where I was going with this.
“Like I said, I couldn’t see her face, but I could see her wings. They were like mine, only hers were black.”
Their confused looks turned into shock as I delivered the last part. Alec's eyes were glued to me. His hands clenched and lips slightly parted.
Raven sat quietly as she seemed lost in thought. Knowing her, she was trying to unravel the mystery of everything that has been happening.
“So, you dreamed of the same woman that has been making hybrids?” Micah asks, as if he is trying to make sense of everything.
“Yes”
“I get why it could have caught you off guard when you realized the woman you dreamed of turned out to be the one making hybrids, but I don’t see how that makes it a premonition when it just revealed a truth,” Alec says, before adding, “And it isn’t that bad”
I glare at him before continuing. “It wasn’t bad until she drove a dagger right through my fucking heart. Not to mention the blood-soaked ground and dead bodies I saw before she killed me.”
There is silence, their eyes going wide.
“You saw yourself d-die?” Alec stammers the words as the weight of what I just told them settles heavily in the air.
Something like fear crosses his eyes and face, but the emotion is gone before I can decipher what it was. Within seconds, he was composed, and his emotions closed off.
I don’t give them time to mull over what I told them. Instead, I tell them everything. Laying everything on the table.
When I am done, Alec is leaning back in his chair, Micah and Raven are seated, and Jason is pacing.
“You didn’t tell me about Nyx revealing that she has a twin.” Raven's eyes shoot daggers at me, betrayal written clear in them.
“I got the memory yesterday and confronted Nyx this morning,” I explain to her. “With everything that has happened since I woke up, I haven’t really gotten time to tell you.”
She nods her head in understanding and I breathe a sigh of relief.
“There is a lot to unpack,” Micha comments, but doesn’t go any further.
The room is shrouded in silence. It isn’t awkward but it is also not comforting, more like a bit tense.
Jason opens his mouth, but shuts it up quickly. He gives it two more tries but gives up when nothing comes out.
My eyes automatically move to Alec, and my stare remains on him as the look on his face catches my attention.
It’s a mix between shock and horror. I hate the look on his face. What I told them couldn’t be that horrific, right?
I frown. “Alec?”
His face is pale as he slowly turns to face me.
“What is it?” I ask, my heart pounding. I didn’t even understand why his reaction bothered me so much.
He’s quiet and just continues staring at me. There is conflict in his eyes. I can see the struggle there. As if he doesn’t know whether to believe whatever is in his mind or not.
I walk towards his desk. “Alec,” I snap my fingers near his face to bring back his attention.
He looks up at me, his green eyes shifting between mine with what I could tell is hesitancy.
I repeat my earlier questions. He takes a deep breath, his chest puffing, as if he’s preparing himself for battle.
Maybe I shouldn’t have asked, because his question leaves me frozen from the inside out.
“Has it crossed your mind that the woman with black wings might just be Nyx’s twin sister?”
