Alec
I step aside but don’t go far. I could feel the charged air around us, but that wasn’t my main concern. No. It was the woman curled into a ball, looking like her whole world had been upended.
I hated seeing her like this. I hated seeing the pain in her eyes. I wanted to do everything to help her. To ease her pain. To protect her.
It’s only been a few weeks since we found out we were mates, but she already has me wrapped around her pinky. She would never understand. Hell, I don’t understand it either. She would never believe me if I told her, but it was the damn truth.
My hands clench as I try to hold myself back from gathering her into my arms. I have to fight the need to be with her. To hold her. To comfort her.
Everything inside me was pushing me, begging me to go to her, but I knew she needed to do this on her own. She had to let go. To release whatever it was she was holding back.
I had this same problem when I first shifted. I always tried holding back. Always tried controlling Knox. The results weren’t pretty. My alpha powers would build up so much that when I finally couldn’t hold back anymore, I would lose control of both myself and my wolf. I had to come to terms with the powerhouse that was my wolf. Only then did I finally gain control.
“I hate this,” Knox growled, his pacing giving me a damn headache.
“I know,” I replied, keeping my eyes on my mate. “We both know she needs this.”
He grumbles but doesn’t say a thing.
“Have you been able to reach Nyx?” I asked, folding my arms across my chest. My eyes were completely focused on Sadie.
“Nope. She’s blocked me.”
Inhuman sounds come from Sadie, almost as if she were physically in pain. She sounded like a wounded animal, and in a way she was.
“Do you think she’ll be okay?” a soft voice said beside me. It was only then that I realized that Raven and the rest had joined us.
I don’t take my eyes off Sadie when I reply with a simple yes. My focus was on her. Only she mattered at this time.
I continue watching her. Seeing her struggle to hold it all inside. Rain came pouring down in torrents as the winds raged, thunder rolled and lightning struck all around us. Looking at it, watching what was happening, it almost felt like the goddess was angry. Like the entire heaven was weeping with Sadie.
Her back arching is the only warning we get before a powerful energy burst is released from the center of her chest. It sounded like a mighty explosion.
We were all thrown back, and I hit the ground hard. I lay there for a while as I tried to get my mind back on track, as the hit had disoriented me a little bit.
As quickly as everything happened, everything stopped. The rain, the thunder and the lightning. The sky clears, and the sun shines as if nothing had happened.
I jumped to my feet and momentarily stopped in my tracks as I looked around us.
“Damn,” Micah murmured behind me.
I gave him a fleeting look, noting the surprise in his face before I turned back to the scene in front of me.
Every tree lay on the ground. Some were uprooted while others were broken in half. The only place that remained untouched was where Sadie was.
I stand in awe of my mate. In awe of her powers. In awe of her ability to hold all that power inside without letting it consume her.
Shaking myself from the stupor, I sprinted towards Sadie. She lay unconscious in the middle of what used to be part of a large forest.
“Sadie,” I call her, shaking her, hoping to wake her up, but she doesn’t open her eyes.
“Come on, Baby, open those beautiful eyes.” I still got nothing, so I just picked her up and rushed to the pack clinic.
As my awe faded, panic started to set in. She is okay, right? She has to be okay… but releasing that much power can’t be good for her. The fact that she was even holding it all in couldn’t have been healthy.
I ignored the dozens of confused and panicked wolves who were outside. They had probably witnessed the sudden weather switch. They also couldn’t have missed the blast of power.
“Jason, you and Micah are on calming the pack members,” I mindlinked him as I entered the clinic.
My sole focus was my mate, but that didn’t mean that I was about to abandon my pack when they were clearly in a panic.
“On it,” they both respond, right before I shut the link with them.
“Get me the doctor on call,” I commanded one of the nurses.
“Yes, Alpha,” she bowed and then led me to a room before rushing out to get a doctor.
Gently, I laid Sadie on the bed and then took the seat next to the bed. I hold her hand, feeling the softness of it. The bond sparks to life, filling me with warmth. I’ve never held her hands and now that I have, I don’t feel like ever letting go.
The door opens and Doctor John walks in and bows before asking. “What seems to be the problem, Alpha?”
“She fainted,” I muttered, not taking my eyes from her face.
He walks further into the room, then takes off the stethoscope from around his neck. He examines her. All the while, my heart is in my throat.
After a couple of minutes, he steps back and turns to me. “You don’t have to worry. There is nothing wrong with her. She just seems exhausted.”
“Are you sure?”
“Positive,” he replied. “Try not to wake her up. She really does need the rest.”
I nod my head. After another bow, he leaves the room.
I’m left with a suffocating silence. My thumb caresses her hand before placing a kiss on the back of her hand. I needed skin contact. I craved it with everything that I was.
“We were idiots, don’t you think?” For the first time since I shifted, Knox’s voice was soft, and it lacked its usual arrogance and self-assurance.
I never thought that my mate would bring me to my knees, but here I was. I would crawl on the ground if it meant she’d give me a second chance. A chance to prove just how much I want her.
“We were blind,” I muttered, my heart heavy. "We had this idea of what our mate should be. When Sadie didn’t tick all the boxes, we dismissed her. We should have realized that something was wrong sooner. Maybe then we wouldn’t be where we are now.”
I get closer and trail my finger down her cheek. They are so soft and for a moment I was tempted to peck her.
The scar catches my attention like it always does. I marked her, thinking I was punishing her, but now it has become my burden to bear. It has become a symbol of my guilt.
Right there and then, I vow to be the one to protect her instead of the one to hurt her. I vowed to be what she needed because she was what I wanted and needed.
I wanted it all. I wanted my mate and my daughter with me. I wanted the soft kisses and little touches. I wanted a future with her where we would grow old together and have a bunch of mini us.
The more I thought about it, the more convinced I was. It wasn’t about her powers. It wasn’t about what she could help my pack with. It was about her. I wanted her love. I wanted her to look at me like she used to. Like I’d hung the moon. I want her to love me like before because I think I am falling in love with her.
