They were all staring at me now. My words hung in the air like a dense fog, the weight of my suspicion pressing down on everyone in the room. I could see it in their eyes—confusion, shock, and a hesitant flicker of understanding starting to form.
Before anyone could speak, Raven's voice cut in, calm but urgent. Her eyes flicking to Brian. “Let’s move this to somewhere more private. This isn’t a conversation for the dungeon.”
No one argued.
Alec gave a nod, already stepping away from Brian’s cell. I followed him, Raven close at my side. Jason and Micah flanked the rear, and the elders murmured among themselves as they moved as a group. The air shifted, heavy with unease.
We returned to the conference room. The moment the door closed behind us, Alec turned to me. “Why do you think Xena is trying to break Kaden out?”
I didn’t answer immediately. I looked down at my hands, feeling the pulse of the bond that tethered me to Alec. “Because it makes sense,” I said quietly.
Raven crossed her arms, as I explained. “Remember? Nyx said they took something from her. I could feel it—her rage, her heartbreak. They didn’t just wrong her. They destroyed something she loved. And if Nyx of all people, wants revenge, then this is personal.”
I looked up at them, my voice gaining strength. “That kind of hatred doesn’t exist without deep roots. Xena and Kaden… they’re connected. I don’t know how, but it’s real. I can feel it. And if she’s building an army of hybrids, it’s not just for power—it’s for war.”
One of the elders, a silver-haired man, frowned deeply. “Even if this… Xena is as powerful as you claim, why would she need an army? If she is anything like you, Alpha Sadie, couldn’t she free Kaden herself?”
There was a moment of silence. Even Micah and Jason looked to me for the answer.
I exhaled slowly. “Because I don’t think she knows how to do it. Not yet. The spell containing Kaden isn’t something anyone can just undo. It’s ancient, like Raven said. I don’t think just anyone can undo it.”
Raven nodded. “It’s a very powerful spell. This isn’t a spell you break with a simple chant. It’s laced with a kind of magic I have never encountered.” She paused, eyes narrowing in thought. “I felt the same signature when I looked into Brian’s memory. The magic used to wipe his mind… it was laced with the same darkness I felt inside Kaden’s confinement. That’s not a coincidence.”
That got everyone's attention.
I froze. “Are you saying that Xena and Kaden share the same kind of magical aura?”
“Yes,” Raven said simply. “The aura doesn’t lie. It’s the same. Dark, evil, twisted.”
I stood there lost in thought. Nyx was so pure, even in her anger and hate. I have never felt anything dark from her. So why is her sister’s aura evil? Why is Xena’s aura dark?
“Oh, shit.” I whispered, my heart hammering in my chest. “This cannot be happening.”
“What?” Everyone asks me, their eyes curious.
“What if the reason why Xena and Kaden’s auras are so similar is because they are bonded?” I whispered, shaken to the core.
“Impossible,” someone muttered, but I didn’t pay any attention. My mind was racing as the idea started to take root.
“Think about it,” I said through clenched teeth. “What happens when a werewolf marks their mate and completes the bonding ceremony?”
There is a beat of silence before Alec answered, his jaw clenched and fist folded. “They become one.”
I nodded my head. “Exactly. They are no longer two separate beings, but one. Their aura, their scents, their minds… everything about them becomes one.”
“Fuck,” Alec cursed and he wasn’t the only one. There is a string of curses from all around the room as it finally sinks in.
The room descends into silence. The air around us is charged with so much uncertainty now that this piece of the puzzle has been put in place.
Another elder, a tall, hawk-eyed woman, breaks the silence. “You still haven’t answered the most important question—why all the secrecy? Why go to such lengths to hide her identity and purpose? If she’s planning to free Kaden, wouldn’t revealing herself as a threat give her more power, more fear to feed off of?”
Micah was the one to respond this time, arms crossed over his chest. “That’s the point, isn’t it? Keep everyone in the dark long enough to move undetected. She probably knew we’d catch on eventually, so she built this army as a distraction. A shield. While we’re too busy fighting off her hybrids, she makes her move.”
Alec nodded, his face grim. “Exactly. She probably wanted to unleash her army when she was ready to free Kaden. While everyone else is still reeling from the appearance of a new species and fighting to stop them, there wouldn’t be anyone to stop her from freeing Kaden.”
My heart beat faster at the name. The fear I’d buried began to creep back to the surface. Kaden wasn’t just powerful—he was beyond any of us. A demigod. And the fact that Xena was tied to him made everything a thousand times worse.
“I don’t think we can afford to underestimate her,” I said. “She is smart and calculated. If I am right and Kaden is her mate, then she’s not only powerful but really dangerous. We all know the lengths people go to for their mates.”
I didn’t mean to, but my eyes move to Alec. I remember very clearly the lengths he went to when he thought I’d cost him Lola. Guilt flashes in his eyes. I guess he was thinking the same thing.
I pulled my eyes from Alec and turned them to Raven, voice steadier than I felt. “We need to fix this. We need to find a way to stop the confinement spell from draining the pack without breaking it or weakening it. After that’s done, we find a way to reinforce it and make it stronger so Kaden will never get out.” I took a deep breath. “I don’t care what it takes, Raven. We can’t afford to mess this up.”
She gave me a grim nod, and I knew she understood.
Jason leaned against the edge of the table. “What do we do with Brian?”
“He’s healed now,” Micah noted. “Stronger. He could’ve escaped by now if he wanted to. But he hasn’t.”
“He wants something,” Alec muttered. “Maybe to gain our trust. Maybe to redeem himself.”
“We’ll arrange for him to be taken to the council,” Corra said. “They need to know about hybrids and he is the proof we need to convince them that they are real.”
“No,” Alec said, sharp. “That’s a mistake. If we parade Brian around, they’ll want to dissect him, lock him away, and make him disappear. That doesn’t help us. What helps us is preparing for what’s coming.”
Orion frowned. “You want to use him?”
“Yes,” Alec said. “Our warriors have never gone up against hybrids. They don’t know how they move, how they think. Brian does. We’ll train. We’ll get stronger and we’ll use him to our advantage.”
I nodded slowly, liking the idea more by the second. “I’ll have my warriors join the training too. My warriors have gone against them. They’ve hunted and killed hybrids. They know how to fight them. Let them help train yours. Let Brian help too. He may not have his memories, but he’s still a weapon. We use that.”
Micah cracked a knuckle. “I’m in.”
“Same,” Jason said. “The more we prepare, the better.”
The elders still looked unsure, but none of them argued. They didn’t have better answers. They remained silent, clearly uneasy and shaken. Good. They needed to be.
“I’ll speak with my warriors,” I said. “Alec, you coordinate with yours. We need to be ready.”
Raven stood. “I’ll do what I can about the spell. I won’t lie—it’s going to be hard. But if there’s even a sliver of hope, I’ll find it.”
The elders exchanged quiet words among themselves, then rose as one. “We’ll continue our search,” One said. “For answers. For anything on Kaden… Do what you must; we won’t stand in your way.”
They left the room with heavy steps, their skepticism slowly eroding under the weight of truth.
Jason and Micah stood as well.
“We’ll gather the warriors,” Jason said.
“I’ll brief them myself,” Micah added. “They’ll be ready.”
When they were gone, the room fell into a hush again. Just Alec and me.
Alone.
