ALPHA JASON'S MATE - Chapter 49: Chapter 49

Jason POV
Max got up and hugged me and made me once again wish that was my elder brother.
"Ever thought of having a younger brother?" I asked and he laughed.
It was something that I usually say to him whenever we were joking.
"My mother is old and my father is dead," he laughed. "However, you can be."
I laughed and we spoke about other things.
When the day was getting sunny, I decided to go on a walk with Max as we kept discussing. I couldn't afford to stay out late with Max because he just recovered from a terrible illness.
"Let's go," I said to him.
Excited, Max walked with me out as we explored the pack once again.
"I would have loved it if Catherine was here with me," he said.
I held his hands and smiled. From someone who has grown to love his mate, it was good. I also like my mate, but I had never thought of loving her, maybe because I don't want to settle for anyone who doesn't love me.
From the look of things, Bella liked me because I was the Alpha or maybe because I was her mate, and there was no reason to fall in love with someone like that.
"I won't be able to love anyone because I have found my mate," I told myself.
It was necessary for me to love my mate, but I wanted her to love me, or, should I say, show me love. I would perform all my duties to her both as her husband and mate.
I didn't know that Max was speaking to me until I heard him laugh.
"Were you speaking?" I asked.
"Yes, I was," he replied.
He asked if I wasn't listening and I nodded.
"Thinking of Bella," he said laughing.
I smiled, nodding my head. That was the truth, I wasn't thinking of her the way he thought.
He suggested that we call both Catherine and Bella to join us but I refused. I knew that they would be together and we shouldn't disturb them.
"Let them be," I said and he nodded.
We continued walking and stopped by a painting; it was so good. Max chose to get it for Catherine as a way of thanking her for the care she has shown him.
"Catherine is going to like it," he said.
The seller looked at me and smiled making me think he could recognize the face under the mask.
Max and I left with the picture, and all of a sudden, Max stopped.
"Why did you stop?" I asked.
"Did he recognize you? If he did, everyone is going to know," Max said and I assured him that no one saw my face.
Here, I didn't like showing myself to sellers because they get overjoyed. At a time when I used to show my face to everyone in the Pack, they thought I could solve all their problem.
"I don't feel free in my pack anymore," I said.
Max began to laugh hard and told me not to worry as my mate was free to move in the pack.
We decided to go back to the pack house after some minutes and met our mate by the way.
Max and Catherine looked at each other with admiration while I gave a side glance at Bella who remained neutral.
"Bella!" I called stretching my hand to her. I haven't forgotten what she told me in the room although it still felt like a threat to me.
Maybe she wants me to act romantic to her so that we would know if we love each other. That was such a good plan.
"Tonight, we would receive the evidence," she said, and I nodded, remembering Samantha.
I walked into the pack house with my arm across her neck.
The people were happy to see this romantic gesture from me.
Immediately we got into the house, I took off my mask and went up to change into a special wear. I locked the door immediately I got into the room as I didn't want Bella to come in while I am still dressing.
Walking down, I looked at Bella who was talking to Catherine. The sun was already going down and I was eager to get the result of the test.
I knew that the Omelette was poisoned but decided to carry out the test because of Bella.
"What time would he come?" Max asked, and I shook my head, meaning that I didn't know when he would come.
Although, I was sure of the time he would come but I knew that he would.
Bella went up to change her clothes and we ate like a family.
While eating, we were informed that the lab technologist had come. I was excited that I would be able to rebuke Bella.
I thanked the technologist and he left.
"Now, let's see the result," Bella said smiling.
Catherine was also excited to see it but Max wasn't.
I slowly tore the environment and smiled when I saw the result. I showed Bella, and her expression changed from an eager one to a sad one.
"The next question is who did it?" Bella asked, and I shared my thoughts with them.
"I know that she can't but why do you also believe this?" She asked.
I thought of all the times she asked questions that I could not answer and I couldn't answer this.
Instead of replying, I began to deliberate on how to get the Criminal.
"Whoever it is, remember my judgment," I said.
"What judgment?" Catherine asked.
Bella informed her that whoever the Criminal was found to be, I was going to let them be killed.
Catherine took her eyes off Bella and looked to Max and Max laughed.
It seemed like he wasn't interested in the discussion so I chose to change the topic.
Hours later, we separated and I moved away from Bella. No one was near to witness these.
