We used to be more than this, but unfortunately, Xavier killed half of us.
But maybe Rick was right, somehow. When I killed that maid, I was very sad. It was a mistake alright, but I really killed her.
Besides, would I have been able to get my wolf if Xavier hadn't taken me and forced me to pretend to be Gwen?
On a normal day, Xavier wouldn't want to have anything to do with me. That means I would have been wolfless for life.
On a side note, I felt grateful to him, but that doesn't mean I would forgive him for all he has done. That would never happen.
“You seem so lost in thought,” Mercury asked suddenly, jerking me out of my thoughts.
I looked at her. “I've got a lot going on in my head,” I confessed.
She nodded once. “Me too,” she said softly and looked away. “But I'm glad we won this race.”
I released a ragged sigh. “Mercury, I couldn't kill him.”
I knew that was one thing everyone wanted to know. At a certain point, I thought Frederick was going to ask me, but I was grateful he didn't in front of everyone.
Mercury pulled to a stop to look at me. “What?”
I nodded once and stopped walking as well. “I couldn't kill Rick and Xavier.”
She regarded me for a moment and resumed walking. “It was very difficult, right?”
I nodded once, admitting it to her for the first time. “But I've rejected him,” I added quickly and continued walking as well.
“I've rejected Rick too,” she confessed.
It was my turn to be shocked.
“What! When?”
Mercury looked away. “It has been a while though. I just didn't want it to disturb your plan, which is why I didn't talk about it at all. But I'm glad. I mean, we don't necessarily have to kill them now since they let us go without a fight.”
It was at that moment it hit me. Mercury doesn't want Rick to die. If I had killed him, it would have hurt her greatly.
I pulled her into a bear hug. She deserved it. I do as well for being so tough. I think I did a great job.
“Let's start a new life, Mercury,” I said against her shoulders.
She pulled back with a short nod. The tears were slipping out of her eyes, and she was doing her best to wipe them off, but more replaced them.
I was moved to tears as well. “As my beta, you are supposed to limit how you cry.”
She nodded quickly and finally used her clothes to wipe the tears off. Suddenly, she froze. She gently looked up at me; her eyes went wide with shock.
“What? Beta?”
I thought as much. She didn't realise what I had said initially. It looked like her brain just processed it.
“Yes,” I said with a short nod. “You are my beta. That's your title.”
“Oh my!” She exclaimed softly and pulled me into another hug. She was overjoyed. I could see that.
When she pulled back again, she suddenly went on one knee. “I promised to protect you with my life.”
I know she will. She loves me to heart; I can feel that. I didn't even need to doubt her.
I gently pull her up. “I know; you have always protected me anyways.”
She laughed, and tears started to slip out of her eyes again. “I don't really know why this is happening.”
I laughed.
The rest of the journey went on silently.
It's surprising we didn't encounter any attacks on the way. Or didn't Augustine know we are leaving? Oh, I remember! His son has been captured. Perhaps Rowan took him along.
Augustine wouldn't have time for us now.
Because of the energy and renewed strength, the people were walking very fast. Everyone was chanting, talking, smiling, and laughing as we neared our pack territory. It was, in fact, faster than I thought.
“Stop!” Someone yelled.
I released a sigh of relief. We are finally here. We have finally arrived.
But surprisingly, the men weren't moving anymore. It felt like something was happening at the front.
“Alpha!” One of the guards called and moved closer to me.
“Yes, what's it?”
“We have a problem. It feels like someone has taken over our pack territory already,” he revealed.
What!
“Lead the way!” I ordered.
“Pave the way for the Alpha!” The voice yelled.
Then, everyone parted slightly, giving me a path to pass through. I walked through with Mercury beside me.
Soon, I joined Dylan at the front.
There were six people standing in front of us, preventing us from moving further. They were three women and three men.
My gaze searched around me. The ruins have been occupied now. There were different huts here and there. The people were already settling down. How can they settle on someone's land?
“This is our Alpha,” Rowan introduced.
One of the men leading chuckled. “Your Alpha?”
“This was our territory. We want to take over. I'm sorry you are already settling down, but you have to leave now.”
They all regarded me for a moment before they burst into laughter as if I just cracked a joke.
I don't get what was so funny in what I have just said.
“I'm sorry, but we can't leave. We don't even know if this place truly belongs to you,” a woman said.
“Yes,” another man chimed in. “We came here first. We didn't meet anyone when we came. So, you can't claim it was yours.”
“It's all lies. They are just going to own it like we did. See them. They are looking for lands to own.”
“Besides,” the one who looks like the leader started again and looked at Dylan, “You thought we would be shaken if we saw your Alpha?”
Dylan scoffed. “Actually, you should be, and you will be.”
They all burst out laughing as hard as they could.
Mercury started forward, but I stopped her with a gesture of my hand.
“You know something?” I started suddenly as I moved closer. “People tend to make grievous mistakes, mistakes you could have avoided if you had just shut your mouth,” I said softly as I stopped in front of the leader.
I had a smile on my lips as I arched my neck and felt the white fur start to cover my body quickly.
I saw the shocked look on their faces as I finally shifted.
I let out a howl before I took the leader off the ground and threw him away, not bothering to check where he would land.
I turned to the rest, angry now. I was ready to pick them up one after the other and do to them what I have done to their leader.
But I was shocked when they all went on their knees. What!
