Xavier
“Will he be alright?” Rowan asked as I struggled with my breathing.
“He will be,” Albert assured. “In fact, he's all better now. He's an Alpha anyways.”
He had successfully pushed my heart back in, but I was still in pain. At this stage, it was in fact very difficult to trace the origin of the pain. It felt like my heart was going to be ripped open.
I've heard always of rejection pain but I didn't know how it made people feel since I never had such experience. I guess now I can share from it.
“Good. That's good to hear,” Rick said with a smile.
Albert smiled as well, bowed, and eventually stepped out.
I wasn't happy that I was alive. In fact, I was upset that Rick had interfered. If he hadn't, I would have been dead, and everything would have ended once and for all.
Rick turned to leave as well.
“Rick,” I called softly.
He stopped in his tracks but didn't turn to look at me.
“What did you do there?”
I was sceptical. How did he know to come to my room at that time? I didn't send for him, and well, he wasn't even supposed to show up until the next morning.
I had it all planned out. Autumn was supposed to kill me without any hindrance.
There was a few minutes of hesitation before he eventually turned to look at me. A dark frown was on his face, but even at that, I could easily read him.
“I didn't know—” he started suddenly, his voice soft and filled with a lot of emotion. “I thought you were looking for a solution.”
“It's a solution,” I responded. “The easiest one,” I added quickly.
He huffed and looked away for a moment. “The easiest? Getting yourself killed was the easiest? So—” he was forced to a sudden stop as he sucked on his breath. “What will happen to the rest of us when you leave?”
I stared for a moment, shocked. Was that a change in tone?
“Tell me, Xavier!” He yelled and looked back at me. His face was suddenly red, and I could see the tears coming out of his eyes.
This was the first time. Rick has never cried, not in front of me.
“What were you thinking? What do you think will happen to me?”
“Rick, I_”
“You have absolutely no right!” He snapped, cutting me off abruptly. “You didn't have any right to make that decision.”
I looked away and swallowed the pain eating me up.
“You told me to see you in the morning. You were going to make me see your cold body? You were going to make me announce you! Xavier, how can you do that!”
Rick seemed to be very angry. It was my first time seeing him like this. He looked as if he was totally out of control.
Even though we were friends, he has always respected me. And he has never stayed so angry at me, not to the point of yelling like this.
“You don't understand, Rick,” I muttered and sat up. “It's the only way I could make amends. It's the only option I had.”
Rick shook his head briefly. “It shouldn't be like that. You are the Alpha of the great Ocean Howl Pack. You shouldn't be the one to give in like that.”
I regarded Rick for a moment. “I'm not an Alpha, Rick, not anymore. I relinquished the position the moment I decided to let Autumn kill me.”
I felt something flicker across Rick’s eyes. He seemed to have gotten even angrier.
“What!”
I looked away. “I'm not worthy of it, Rick. The only thing I have ever done was make mistakes. I'm not even able to fix my mistakes.”
“So, because of that, you have to leave the pack? Like that? How would the Ocean Howl Pack survive without you?”
I released a ragged sigh and looked up at him again. “You will. You will become the new Alpha, and everything will go smoothly. Autumn promised not to touch my people, and Rowan wouldn't be able to do anything when I'm dead. It was a nice way.”
“Why?”
“My sins are unforgivable, Rick. Even the moon goddess wouldn't think twice about it. I've sinned, and my punishment was death.”
Rick closed his eyes for a moment as if battling with an inner feeling. “I will never be the new Alpha. I will never be the one to replace you.”
I shook my head briefly. “We don't have a choice. When I'm gone, you will be able to make the right decision.”
“When are you gone?” Rick's eyes seemed to go wide with shock.
“You seem to be missing something. I haven't entirely escaped my punishment. I've made mistakes. I've offended people and, most especially, the moon goddess. I underestimated her power.”
Rick wiped off the tears with one palm. “You are the one that seems to be missing something here,” his voice was suddenly low. “You can make mistakes. Why can't you? You are not some deities. You are just like us. What makes you special? It's not like you were created specially. Fine, you have a special wolf, but that doesn't mean you wouldn't make mistakes.”
What!
“If there's still any punishment somewhere, it's definitely not for you. Gwen is gone. It's not even certain she's going to wake up. And the fact that the Moon goddess already arranged for Autumn to kill you is_”
“What do you mean by that?” I asked quickly, cutting through his sentence.
He sighed and looked away, unwilling to talk.
His actions got me further intrigued.
“What were you babbling about?”
No response.
I got up. “Rick, tell me!”
He nodded several times and looked at me again. “My father told me about a prophecy. It was what your father received, and he made up his mind to train you to be strong.”
“Yes, what prophecy is that?” I probed further in.
He held my gaze for a moment. “Your mate would kill you.”
Wait a moment! I was dumbfounded for a moment.
“Autumn has been destined to kill you before she was even born. At first, it wasn't clear. But when she came to this world, it got even clearer. That was why the witches were annihilated,” he explained.
I stared at him, still confused.
“So, Autumn isn't punishing you for what you did. The moon goddess was probably punishing you for something your father did. This pack was supposed to be in ruins, and that would have been the case if Autumn hadn't interfered. Rowan would have waged war on us or maybe even supported Autumn. But it doesn't change the fact that your death has been signed even before you took the position. So, it wasn't even what you did,” he revealed.
Shock kept me motionless for what felt like hours even though it was just for a few seconds.
A prophecy?
If it was a prophecy, then I was fated to die. Then, everything happened because it had already been written down.
“Then, I should be dead already. If I were fated to die, I shouldn't still be alive now.”
Rick shrugged. “I have no idea, but one thing I'm sure of is that I will not let anything happen to you. If the moon goddess is against this, then a lot of werewolves will have to rebel.”
