Rick has never been so determined. Seriously, I know we've come a long way, and we have been together for some years now.
But I'm still sceptical as to his recent actions. It felt like I didn't know this Rick.
Rick stepped out eventually. He was still in shorts, and he needed to get changed. He put up some fights, and he must have been exhausted.
After he left, I walked to the window and stared out at nothing in particular.
I felt a lot better now, and I was almost healed up. It just felt like I needed to rest a bit more, and I would feel better.
I wonder how Autumn is currently doing. Thinking about her hurt me so much.
I wonder if I would have been able to avoid fate if I hadn't blamed the moon goddess for the misfortune that befell me.
I could have looked for my mate, found her, and mated her. Then, I would have realised she was in fact a silver wolf that the wolves have ever known.
Autumn possesses a strong power now that if she decides to attack me, I might not be able to survive it. Though, it still bothers me, the reason why she infact spared me.
She could have taken the men.
For someone with a powerful wolf like me, thirty-three was a fair one for me. I could take them down in a go. Not to say judging by the strength of the silver wolf, dealing with them would have been very easy.
Why then, did she spare me? Why did she stop the war between me and Rowan?
And that reminds me, Rowan was talking about Lucas. That name sounds foreign to my ears. Who could he be?
A soft knock sounded on the door. The door opened almost immediately, and Brown walked inside.
“Alpha, we have a situation.”
I turned to look at him. “Report on everything!”
He hesitated for a moment as if he didn't know how to start. “The moon-like pack has left.”
I know that. Autumn wouldn't wait another moment. And well, this time around, they will be able to get to their territory unscathed, now that Autumn has finally shifted.
“Continue.”
“We were under a minor attack while we were at your chamber. The prison was raided, and a lot of people escaped,” he revealed.
Rowan personally told me he was leaving and he wasn't going to wage war on me. If it wasn't Rowan, then who could it have been?
Then, I remembered something.
“And Lucas, who is he?”
“He is Augustine’s son.”
What!
I stared for a moment, dumbfounded. No way!
“Lucas is Augustine’s only son that stays in the city.”
For a moment, I couldn't think. It felt like my whole brain was clogged. The traitor, Lucas, was Augustine’s son? How was that even possible?
Augustine would never betray me. Even though I struggled with the fact that I didn't let him know what was happening with me even though he had always supported me in all ways.
How then could his son be involved in this conspiracy?
I started out of the room, without thinking twice. If anyone can explain this better, then it was Augustine.
The hunt festival just ended, so he should still be in the pack house. So, I started towards his room.
Brown followed me quickly, but he didn't try to stop me.
I barged into one of the rooms, hoping to see him, but all I'm met with is emptiness. My gaze searched around for a moment before I turned to Brown.
“Where is Augustine?”
Brown went still. It felt like he had something else to say, but he just didn't want to say it.
“Where is he!” I yelled, forcing the Alpha aura on him.
“He left,” he said quickly. “He left with Lucas and some of the elders.”
I was still sceptical.
“What do you mean he left?”
“Brown isn't in the right position to explain this,I am,” a deep, familiar voice said suddenly, just as Brown opened his mouth to talk.
Rick stepped inside, clad in a black trouser and a grey top. He looked very clean now.
“Then start talking,” I was anxious.
“Leave, Brown,” Rick’s eyes were still on me as he said.
Brown hesitated briefly, bowed, and eventually walked out.
“What is this whole thing about? Lucas betrayed me? Lucas is Augustine's son, the—.”
“_one you trust,” Rick completed for me.
I nodded once. “Start talking, Rick.”
“Well, there's nothing more to say, Xavier. Lucas was the person we had been looking for. He kidnapped Gwen, and it turns out that Augustine was in on it with him.”
What! No way!
“While we were in your room, with the other business, Augustine attacked us and took his son. That's not all; he left with some of the elders.”
How could this have happened?
It felt like my life just flashed across my eyes. I couldn't breathe for a moment.
It wouldn't have been Augustine. It shouldn't have been him.
Augustine surrendered to my father. He was one of those Alphas that took the easiest way out. And though he and my father later fought over something I had no idea of, he left and I found a way to bring him back.
But we had gotten even closer before he left. I just knew he was the one I needed. He was one of those people I needed to keep my pack.
I can't believe I was betrayed.
“As we speak, Augustine is waging war on us with the rest of the Pack Alpha,” Rick was saying. “He left with Marcus, Ingeus, Levi, Cindy, and then three Alphas from the right side: Owen, Mateo, and Sebastian.”
I turned away suddenly as Rick’s voice suddenly sounded far from me. My head reeled.
Augustine betrayed me? Why?
“Xavier!” Rick called but I ignored him.
How could Augustine do this to me? I have even blamed myself for not letting him know about Gwen. I can't believe he was, in fact, the main culprit.
How could this happen?
Why would Augustine kidnap Gwen? He should know that with Gwen gone, Rowan would definitely wage war on us. Why then would he want to do it? Or was he_?
“Xavier!” Rick snapped and forced me out of my void.
I turned to look at him again. He had this dark frown on his face.
“Listen to me, Xavier! This is not the time for this. We are under an attack. We will die if we don't do anything!”
I couldn't think properly.
“We will have to develop a strategy. We don't even have enough soldiers. A lot of them were killed already. And we are outnumbered. Augustine, with the other elders, are seven, and we are just four. Besides, it seemed like Augustine had suddenly increased his army. One of our neighbouring towns is down already.”
I staggered backward unconsciously. My heart was racing so fast and I was having a difficult job to steady it.
“What do we do?”
I felt hot tears sliding down my eyes as I shook my head briefly. “I am not your Alpha again, Rick.”
“Fuck that!” Rick yelled. “We need you!”
“No! I've failed everyone!”
Rick took a step closer. “We can start from the beginning, Xavier. Don't let us give up like this.”
I shook my head again. Even Rick knows it's over.
“We are outnumbered, and we don't have the time. Augustine must have been planning this for a while.”
“Xavier that I know isn't scared. You aren't supposed to be scared now. We can bring down anyone we want to.”
I don't think that applies to me anymore. Right now, it feels like I can't even think straight.
How could Augustine betray me?
“Xavier!” Rick snapped again.
I looked up at him for a moment. “It's over, Rick. We are going to lose this war.”
And that was the truth.
“But_”
“There's no but!” For the first time that day, I found myself yelling as well. “What else should I cleave onto? Gwen is gone! Augustine betrayed me! And my elders have turned their backs on me!”
Rick’s expression softened immediately. “But there should still be something we can do.”
I started to shake my head. “You and I know that it's hopeless. Ocean Howl Pack will soon be no more. It's the end!”
“Oh no!” Rick cried and turned around to punch the wall behind him. “This can't seriously be the end!”
It is. It's over.
“What do we do now?”
I had no idea that Augustine would in fact be the traitor. I merely thought it was Philip. It was supposed to be Philip, and Rick was supposed to be able to deal with him when I was gone. I thought the only war I was supposed to avoid was the one with Rowan. How could I have failed so much? Now, I would put my pack members in trouble.
“We die fighting! I will not be remembered as the Alpha that ran away in trouble.”
“Is that seriously what you have to think about that?”
I swallowed hard. “It's the only solution,” I smiled. “Send a note to your parents. They should leave. You should also leave with them. This is my fight, and I will fight alone.”

But I'm still sceptical as to his recent actions. It felt like I didn't know this Rick.
