What can Xavier be doing at this time?
I stared at the dark sky for a moment. There were not enough stars tonight. It looked like it might rain soon or maybe it was just the clouds. It felt like a reflection of my emotions.
I released a ragged sigh. I wondered why Xavier's thoughts couldn't seem to leave my mind.
Maybe it's still the rejection. Why, then, am I bothered about the war? I’ve been silently hoping I was at least able to avoid the war between Rowan and Xavier.
But then, if that had worked, what about the one with Augustine? Xavier didn't let me say a word. So, it would definitely catch him unawares.
But even at that, Xavier should be able to take him down easily. He has over ten Alpha under him anyway. If Augustine left, there would still be many of them who could fight against Augustine.
“Give that to me!” A soft voice yelled and a group of children hurried past me.
Their voices seemed to have jerked me out of my thoughts and returned me to the mundane world.
“This is really delicious! I didn't know June could cook so well,” Diamond said suddenly and everyone burst into laughter.
“Well, don't underestimate my mother's skill. After the Alpha's mom, she's the next,” Dylan joked.
Everyone burst into laughter again.
Everyone was enjoying themselves. Mom and Dad were in a corner, eating and whispering some words to themselves.
I watched them for a moment and didn't realize how much I was so lost in my thoughts again until someone cleared their throat above me.
I looked up at Mercury. “How is it going?”
Mercury's gaze searched around quickly. I followed her path for a moment at the people eating and drinking. They looked happy like they were where they were supposed to be.
“It looks like people are enjoying themselves,” Mercury uttered. “But_” she looked at me. “You seemed so lost in thought earlier.”
I cracked into laughter. “Isn't that normal? I'm the Alpha now. I need to think.”
Mercury cleared her throat meaningfully and started to devour the food on her plates. I watched her for another moment.
I don't even feel like eating. I don't even have the strength.
Before Xavier attacked us, I had always looked forward to two things. I couldn't wait to find my mate. The reason was palpably clear then. Apparently, I was after getting my power so I would be able to rule the people. The majority of the elders thought I was just a useless omega.
But now, I don't even know how I was supposed to think.
I can't seem to be able to get Xavier out of my mind, even though that was something I desperately wanted at this moment.
“You are not going to talk to me?”
I released a sigh and looked away. “It felt like I have a heavy weight on my chest and well, on my head,” I confessed.
Mercury regarded me for a moment. “Is this about sparing his life?”
“No, actually. It's just_”
“The rejection,” Mercury cut in quickly. “Have you forgotten you and Xavier have severe bonds? You must be feeling pains in your heart as a result of it.”
I nodded slightly. That was it actually. But then, I had already forgotten that I wasn't the only one passing through something like that. Mercury also had to reject Rick.
“How are you holding on?”
Mercury smiled. “I'm trying my best.”
I looked away and eventually forced some steak into my mouth. Chewing it was a problem on its own.
“Do you think Xavier might plan to attack us?”
I smiled at this. “He can't. There are a lot of factors on the ground already.”
“Which is?” Mercury probed.
“Well, if Xavier doesn't go to war with Rowan, he would definitely go with Augustine. He's half doomed and he didn't even know about it.”
“Maybe if he does, he would have asked for death.”
I chuckled, for the first time that night. “He did ask for it though. I was the one that refused to grant his request.”
“But why didn't you kill Alpha Xavier? You were so determined about this.”
“I don't know. Maybe because I thought he doesn't really deserve to die.”
Mercury went quiet afterward. The only thing I could hear now was the background voices of the children playing and the people talking and laughing as they had their dinner.
The people look happy alright. It felt like I was the only sad one.
“Maybe he doesn't,” Mercury said eventually. “There should be second chances actually.”
I looked at her. “What? You want me to forgive him?”
“Maybe not! But then, I support your decision. And don't worry, your secrets are safe with me,” she muttered and stared at the elders for a moment.
I scoffed. “What secret?”
“That you love Xavier.”
“You better stop!” I feigned annoyance.
“You seem to be forgetting something, Alpha. We've been together for a while. I can read you like an open book.”
I laughed, unable to hold it any longer. “You sure know a lot about me.”
Mercury looked at me, a soft smile on her face. “Now this is the Autumn I know.”
I sobered quickly.
“So, my twins_ mom said we looked alike. Maybe we still do,” I held her gaze for a moment. “I want to find her.”
Mercury nodded several times. “You should. Who knows, she might still be alive.”
I believe so.
“But_ something is surprising. I can't stop thinking about her,” she looked at me again. “No matter how hard I tried.”
I raised skeptical brows at her. “Who?”
“Gwen.”
As much as that sounds, I couldn't hide the fact that I already thought in that direction. I have seen Gwen close and I can confidently say we look so much alike.”
“But that's not possible.”
“Why not? Has your mom seen her?”
I shook my head briefly. “Not yet.”
“Well, something tells me there's more to it. What if Gwen is your twin sister?”
Can that be? What if she was? No, it doesn't even make any sense.
“No! I don't agree!”
“Why do you think so? It's rare for people to know someone who looks so much like them. When have you seen someone that looks like me? Don't talk as if it's something normal.”
But I still don't want to believe that. It felt so surreal.
“But Gwen is from the North. She's a princess Alpha. Are you saying Rowan lied about his sister?”
“I have no idea but I will find out,” she swore.
That doesn't make any sense though. We might look alike, but we can't be twins.
It's not possible.
