“More whips!” A thick voice ordered suddenly.
A boy of just eight years was tied against a pole in the training room.
Just as the whip made contact with his skin, the boy yelled out in pain.
“Again!” He ordered.
And more cries filled the room.
“Dad, I'm so sorry. Please, forgive me. It will never happen again!”
A flash of anger flickered across the man's face at the words. “I am not your father!” He snapped. “When I'm in here, I'm your Alpha! And you will do anything I want!”
The boy sucked in his breath and nodded quickly. “I will do that. Please, let me go, Alpha.”
The man hesitated as he regarded him for a moment.
“You are so weak. You can't be my son. My son will never be this weak!” He spat out in disgust. “You annoy me, Xavier and you will not leave this room until you do as I've asked. I don't even care if you die in this same room. Dying is better than having a weak heir!”
My eyes snapped open suddenly. I was breathing heavily and beads of perspiration had started to tickle down my face.
My gaze searched around me quickly. It suddenly felt like I had my father's spirit around me.
And these dreams have been coming in more often now. I can't believe all this is happening.
We are finally going to war.
Maybe I should have stopped Rick and made sure Autumn killed me. If she had, I wouldn't have been able to witness all these. But now, it's too late.
Killing myself would be considered as being a coward.
I pushed out of bed and moved to the library to drink some water. As I gulped it down, the door opened and Rick walked inside.
“There's someone here to see you.”
I looked at him for a moment. “Who?”
“Philip.”
What does he want?
“He didn't leave with Augustine?”
Rick nodded once. “I was shocked as well when I discovered.”
That doesn't even make any sense. All these while, I've been thinking Philip was the main culprit. He was obviously working with Augustine, so why didn't he leave with him?
“Let him in,” I ordered.
Rick bowed slightly and stepped out. He returned immediately,with Philip right behind him. Rick didn't leave afterward; perhaps he thought Philip might try to hurt me.
I looked at Philip for a moment. “Why are you here?”
Philip shook his head briefly with some kind of pity. “You aren't at all fit to be the Alpha. You messed everything up.”
I scoffed and looked away.
“Augustine was able to betray you and leave with some of your Alphas. Aren't you ashamed? You should have poisoned yourself or not bother waking up the next day.”
“Watch what you say!” Rick snapped and moved closer to him.
“Or what? What will you do now? Kill me?”
Rick reached for his neck and squeezed. “Say one more word and I will kill you! I promise!”
I gulped down the rest of the water and laughed, shocking myself at my level of patience.
No, that wasn't patience. That was pain.
“Rick,” I called softly.
Rick understood and stepped back.
I looked at Philip. “Are you here to mock me?”
Philip spat out. “Of course I am. How could this have happened to you? A lot of people are counting on you, but you've let them down. Augustine has taken down two villages already. Your people have become his.”
I took some steps closer slowly. “And what do you have to say to that?”
“That you were careless! The only thing you cared about was yourself and no one else!”
I scoffed again. “And who betrayed me with him? You worked with Augustine!”
He went stiff for a moment. “You must be kidding me. What do you mean by that?”
I regarded him for a moment. “Why don't you explain to me. You were working with Augustine and now that he left, you want me to think you aren't working together?”
There was a flicker of something in his eyes. It was very fast, so I couldn't really identify it.
“So, you are here to mock me? After betraying the Ocean Howl pack!”
Philip looked away for a moment. “I don't know what you are saying but I have never done anything wrong. I might hate you but I will never betray the Ocean Howl pack.”
I turned away. “Hurting me is hurting Ocean pack, Philip. I'm the Alpha but you tried to kill me. You worked with Augustine to bring me down. Though, one thing I'm confused about is why you are still here.”
“Don't accuse me wrongly, Xavier. I have nothing to do with whatever Augustine had done. So, don't fucking pin them on me because you don't want to accept your mistakes!” He yelled behind me.
“You will be careful of how you speak to the King!” Rick flared up.
“King?” Philip seemed to have found something funny in that word. “A king without his queen is what? You couldn't even protect your queen. A king without his people is what? Your people will soon be Augustine’s people. So, are you still a king? Ask yourself that.”
“King Xavier will fight this war_” Rick started.
“And win?” Philip completed it for him. “You think you can win? We are outnumbered. Augustine is with Marcus, Ingeus, Cindy, Levi, Mateo, Sebastian, and Owen. And the last time I checked, Augustine has increased greatly in army size. It's you against millions.”
That was right though. I had already thought about that several times before I fell asleep yesterday. I know I'm going to lose this war.
“And you have to rub it on my face!” I turned to him and yelled at his face, for the first time that morning.
“Because you need someone to do it. Rick is too much into you to tell you the truth. You need someone who will step across the line!”
I huffed. “You said we? Who said you are wanted in this pack?”
His eyes widened slightly,with shock. “What?”
“I know I might lose this war but there's no way I will be fighting with a traitor.”
“What do you_”
“Leave, Philip!” I yelled, cutting him off of whatever he was saying. “Before I'm forced to start off with you.”
Philip clenched his teeth in anger. “You will let go of the pair of hands you could use to win the war?”
“Yes! If the pair of hands are all traitors. But then, in the next few minutes, I might actually decide to cut the pair of hands off. So, you better leave before that!” I muttered and turned to look at Rick. “Call the rest of the Alpha for a meeting.”
Rick bowed slightly but he didn't leave immediately maybe because Philip was still in the room as well.
“You will lose this war, Xavier. Even with me, it's only the goddess intervention that will make you win. And with me gone, you will definitely lose.”
