Rick came to get me after the Alphas had assembled in the meeting room.
I couldn't stop my heart from beating faster as I and Rick walked towards the meeting room.
Philip’s words kept echoing in my ears. Even though Rick refused to say it I knew he wasn't satisfied by my decision. We needed all the hands we could get, especially in a war like this that it's not even certain we would win.
In a case like this, I was, in fact, supposed to ask Rowan for help, but then, I was already certain that I was going to be rejected. Rowan would still be upset about Gwen. No, it would be very wrong to even ask for help.
But I would never have anything to do with someone like Philip. Why should I? Who knows? Perhaps he was still working with Augustine. Having an inner enemy would not only let us lose, it would make it easier.
The soldiers opened the door and I stepped inside with Rick.
Leo and Oliver had a strong expression on their faces as I neared them.
I released a sigh. “Augustine had waged war on us,” I said suddenly, to secure their attention.
They both looked at me.
“Where is Philip?” Leo asked.
I looked elsewhere, ignoring the question.
“He left,” Rick answered for me.
“What! Left!” Oliver exclaimed softly
I regarded them for a moment. Even though I was not able to read their minds, I knew they were obviously thinking about the outcome of the war. They were scared already like I was. The only difference was that I was ready to fight to the end.
I cleared my throat meaningfully. “The war_”
“Is it sure we would win?” Leo cut in quickly.
I looked at him. “We can't,” I said as a matter of fact. “But we will not run away as cowards. We will fight till the end.”
Leo cleared his throat but didn't say anything.
I saw the hesitation and scoffed. I knew it was going to come to this anyway. But I don't blame them. It was normal for the Alpha to pull back. Not everyone would be like me that was determined to fight to the end.
But then, I merely thought it was the only way to win. If I have nothing to lose, I will fight like it's my last.
“If there's anyone that wants to leave, they can,” I said suddenly, shocking everyone. “No one will blame you for leaving.”
There were a few minutes of silence before Leo looked up at me. “I'm sorry, Alpha but I don't think I can stay. I really need to protect my mate and family. If Philip was here, we could be certain we would win, but now, I’m more scared than ever.”
I nodded slightly. “You can leave then.”
“What!” Rick exclaimed behind me.
“Thank you so much!” Leo uttered and hurried out of the meeting room.
It was as if he couldn't wait, as if he had already been regretting not leaving with Augustine. But then, I don't blame him at all.
All this was my fault to begin with. If I had been very careful and conscious, we wouldn't be in this kind of position.
Rick moved closer. “But Alpha_”
“There will be no more discussion on it,” I said quickly, shutting him off.
Rick might want me to beg the Alpha so they can at least help me out, but that won't be the case, not this time.
I turned to look at Oliver, shocked that he was still standing. I waited for a few minutes, hoping he would talk but he didn't say anything.
“Are you not leaving, Oliver?”
Oliver looked up at me. He was a middle-aged man the last time I checked, but now, it looked like he had suddenly aged several years more.
“I'm not going anywhere,” he said, shocking me for the second time in that room.
I was fascinated.
“Why?”
“I would like to fight with you. You are a strong wolf, we can still win this war.”
I like Oliver. He's being optimistic but this time around, we should all look at the real aspect of the whole thing.
“Well, looking at the odds. Oliver,” I hesitated slightly. “We will likely not win this war. You should leave with Leo.”
“Well, Ocean Howl pack is my pack; I will not forsake it because I'm scared of dying.”
“But_”
“Well, I'm an old man. I think I'm done with life already. I don't need to worry if I will die or not. I have my life to own to you anyway. I would be dead anyway if it wasn't for you. So, just see this as a payback,” he muttered.
I felt moved to tears.
I nodded slightly. “Good but we will do something. I want you to gather your household. Rick will escort them to safety until this war is over. Augustine merely wants to own Ocean Howl. So, he wouldn't kill the people but your family and Rick’s own might be in danger.”
Oliver regarded me for a moment and I wondered what he was thinking of.
“Alright. I will do that immediately.”
“Yes, do that quickly and get back to Rick. I will work on the plan.”
Oliver nodded once, a smile suddenly playing on his face. “I'm still certain we can win this war.”
I reciprocated his smile. I didn't want to sound too pessimistic. But then, I knew this war was nothing to write home about.
As I watched Oliver walk out of the meeting room, I couldn't handle my aching heart.
Ocean Howl Pack has a total of eleven packs under them but now, only one pack is ready to fight for it.
“We shouldn't have let Leo leave,” Rick complained like I knew he would.
“Well, it was two. It was either he leaves now, or he goes against us on the battlefield. At least we know where we stand now. It's better than getting stabbed in the back.”
Rick eventually nodded.
“Do what I asked you to, while I plan how we will attack.”
Rick nodded again and moved to the door. He stopped suddenly and turned to look at me.
“We will win this war, right?”
