The door opened anyway and Elixir stepped inside.
I released a sigh of relief. “It's you, Elixir.”
“Yes,” she hesitated. “Were you expecting someone else?”
“Well,” I stressed and looked down at what I was doing. I quickly pulled my father's note into the others.
It wasn't that I didn't trust Elixir but I felt it wasn't yet the time for her to know. Call it instinct or because I simply don't want to disturb her.
“What are you doing? You should be asleep now.”
“Well, I'm about to. I just wanted to make sure these are arranged,” I lied.
Elixir moved nearer. “What are these?”
“Well, the ingredients for cakes. I'm giving them to the chef because I want them to make them for me regularly. I have my recipe,” I explained, hoping she would swallow the explanation.
She hesitated briefly and nodded her head. “Alright. You should sleep now.”
I pushed the notes together. “Yes, you are right. I'm feeling sleepy already.”
“Or should I lend you a hand?”
I shook my head briefly. “That won't be necessary. It's ok. Besides, we all have to sleep earlier and wake up earlier. Tomorrow is a big day.”
Elixir nodded in response. “You are right. I will see you tomorrow morning then.”
I nodded, feigned a yawn, and climbed on the bed while Elixir moved towards the door.
I let her walk out of the room before I jumped out of bed to continue what I was initially doing.
I started comparing the notes but none of the handwriting was similar.
A yawn escaped me as I dropped the last note and discovered that none of the handwriting on the note actually matched the one on the note that my father gave me.
At that point, it seemed like I was never going to find the person who wrote the note. I mean there are a lot of maids in the palace.
Besides, how do I get the rest to write something down so I can find out if they are the writer or not?
When I finally decided to sleep, a lot of things went through my mind. I reminisced about the events that took place earlier today.
Then, I remembered the images I saw in the hall.
Wait a moment, what were those for? They don't even look like mine. Aside, that was my first time having something like that.
And I didn't have anything like it again. Maybe there's something with the maid. Which means I have to find her and check what it's all about.
Till tomorrow then.
But isn't it all looking like a dead end? Like there's nothing else for me to do to escape this torture.
That this is my fate and it's sealed.
I woke up suddenly. I was sweating profusely.
I had the same dream again. I don't think that has a plan of stopping. I mean it's not supposed to.
I should be reminded of this torture. I should be punished for being too weak to protect my pack.
My gaze searched around for the wall clock. It was a few minutes after 7. The maids will be here any moment from now to get me ready.
I sobbed quietly. I feel overwhelmed.
There was a slight knock on the door.
The maids must be here already. It's time to pretend to be Gwen. The moment they walk in, I will be Gwen and not Autumn.
The door opened without waiting for my orders and one of my maids stepped inside. She's one of the maids that has been stuck with me since yesterday.
“Luna, someone wants to meet you.”
My heart skipped a beat. Who could it be?
“Let her in.”
She bowed and stepped out of the room.
The door opened almost immediately and a girl walked inside. She bowed immediately, so I wasn't able to see her face at first.
But when she looked up, I recognized her all right.
“You are the girl that I bumped into at the hall yesterday,” I said with excitement.
I was going to find her anyways
But why is she here in the first place?
“Is something wrong? Why are you here?”
She regarded me for a moment. “You don't remember this face at all? Aside from bumping into me, I feel we know each other,” she explained.
I got off the bed and advanced towards her slowly while still staring at her. I don't know what she's planning but I must admit that she does look familiar.
But could it be like she knows Gwen? Well, I'm not Gwen.
I stopped suddenly. “If you have anything to report, you can do it. If not, leave,” I muttered thickly, trying my best to act strong even though I was shivering inside.
She snickered. “You don't need to be like that, Autumn. I know who you are.”
My heart nearly exploded. What! How?
“Look at me very well. Mercury hasn't really changed.”
The words forced me to look up at her again and I didn't miss the smirk on her face. She was trying so hard not to laugh.
Then, the images started kicking in.
I met Mercury when I was ten. She was lost and confused and didn't even remember anything about herself.
“What! Mercury?” I couldn't believe it.
Mercury nodded once, the smile still playing on her face. “I can't believe it's you after all these years.”
I rushed forward and ended up in her embrace.
“I can't believe it yet.”
“But what happened?” Mercury pulled back to look at me. “Why are you pretending to be Gwen?”
“It's a long story, Mercury but how did you know I'm not Gwen?”
If everyone I come across can easily discover I'm not Gwen, then how do I convince Gwen's parents?
“Well,” she started but stopped immediately and looked at me. “I saw you being tortured,” she whispered.
My heart took on a fast beat.
“I've helped you inside this room twice,” she revealed.
Now I know why I have always been finding myself back inside this room.
“And you had to wait till today before you show yourself,” I queried her and pulled her into another hug.
She laughed. “I'm sorry. I had to be sure it was you or I could have my head off.”
I laughed at this.
She pulled back again, to look me directly in the eyes. “I can't stay for long. I just came to check on you. I have to leave now.”
“B_but why? I just met you and there's a lot I want to tell you.”
She nodded once. “I will come to you soon but we have to be careful. This palace is full of people, both the good and the bad. You can't trust anyone, not even your maids. Anyone can be working against you.”
I was taken aback. Anyone?
She nodded again. “Anyone.”
