I blinked once, then severally. It was as if my senses had been robbed of me.
“I think that serves him right,” one of the Alpha said but my mind was too cloudy to check who it was.
“Anthony should have been killed instead but it's fun to watch how it feels when someone loses a beloved one which was what he would have done to the Alpha,” another Alpha supported.
At that moment, it looked like I couldn't breathe properly. My heart itched. What! My mother would be killed?
“Yes, that serves him right!” Gwen's mother joined in.
I looked over at her and slowly shook my head. “This isn't right, mum. Lisbeth doesn't have to die.”
The words were out of my mouth before I could stop them.
“Is the Luna feeling pity for the people that would have killed her?” One of the Alpha commented.
Xavier didn't say a word from where he was, but I could feel his gaze on me.
I decided to continue what I had started. Perhaps, I could make them change their mind.
“Well, they don't have to die to pay for the sins they've committed.”
“No punishment would suffice what they did to you, Gwen,” Father said suddenly, looking at me. “They tried to harm you. Both husband and wife should be killed.”
“That's right,” Xavier added suddenly, and my heart skipped another beat. “Anthony and his wife should be killed. And that little daughter of theirs. The three of them should be killed.”
I couldn't stop the shiver at this point. My body was shuddering and I couldn't even control it.
Gwen's mother looked up at me. “A_are you alright? What's happening?” she noticed.
I swallowed harder and tried to steady my hard breathing. How could I be all right when I'm sitting here while people decide my fate?
As if life wasn't enough. My parents would be killed too? Over something we didn't even commit.
“Are you trying to give them a chance?” Gwen's father's gaze on me hardened. “Have you gone soft?”
“I admit my Luna has changed,” Xavier released a wry laugh.
It was as if they were pushing me. No, it looks like Gwen wasn't who I thought she was. Who was Gwen actually?
“Gwen,” Gwen's father called.
I closed my eyes for a moment and tried to steady my heavy breathing. I didn't know what to say, or what to do.
When I opened my eyes, they were all looking at me, expecting my answers, my decision.
“Anthony and his wife should be killed,” I started suddenly, shocking myself as well.
No, I knew I had to be careful. And the only way to do that was to declare my death.
“But not tomorrow,” I muttered and glanced at Xavier. His expression didn't change and he was in fact, still watching me. “They have to be killed with their only daughter whenever she's found.”
My heart broke at the decisions I had made. I have just signed my death warrant. As far as I'm concerned, Xavier might kill me today.
I looked over at Xavier and caught the smirk on his face.
“Exactly! That's my daughter!” Gwen's father said happily.
Gwen's mother gently massaged my hand, a wide smile on her face before she turned to Xavier.
I didn't hear what she said because I zoomed out.
There's no way I can prove my father's innocence. I can't find the writer of the note. Does this not look like the end?
“Really?” Gwen's mother said suddenly and turned towards me. Her voice penetrated my thoughts when nothing else could. “You made these cakes?”
I was confused. I looked at Xavier for answers. It was as if I was half gone.
“She baked all night,” Xavier supplied on my behalf.
I looked over at the woman again and made a short nod of my head. “I d_did.”
Then I remembered something.
“When are you leaving, mom?”
“Tomorrow,” Gwen's mother responded.
That's so short. Xavier might decide to kill me when they leave. What else am I supposed to do?
“Is something wrong?”
I shook my head briefly and faked a smile. “Nothing. I was just curious. How is the cake by the way?”
“Delicious,” she muttered.
I nodded once. “I can give you the recipe.”
Gwen's mother looked up at me, her eyes twinkling. “No, you will bake some more when you come around. Then you can hand over the recipe,” she suggested.
“That's nice,” I replied with a short nod.
That is if I'm able to last that long.
“Gwen,” a soft voice called suddenly. It seemed distant, yet so near.
I stabbed my fork into the cake in front of me, angrily actually. My mind wandered far away.
“Gwen,” that same voice called again.
I pushed the fork into my mouth unconsciously, a slight hiss escaping me.
“Gwen!” The voice was firm now and sounded very familiar.
My head whipped towards Xavier and my eyes widened when I realized he had been the one calling out to me.
A dangerous scowl was suddenly on his face but it disappeared as fast as it had appeared.
But I knew I was in trouble already. My name is Autumn. How am I supposed to get used to ‘Gwen?’
“Here,” he said softly and patted the chair close to him.
I understood what he was saying immediately.
I released a ragged sigh and stood. But I had barely taken a step when I felt a rush of dizziness.
And suddenly, I was falling into a pit of darkness.
“Gwen!”
I heard screams before I blacked out.
