“Xavier's father heard the prophecy. A powerful witch will be born. She will be the one to clear his pack off the earth. To prevent this, he decided to frame them and kill them. He spared one anyway, just one. Your mother.”
“But what if he had killed your mother? You wouldn't have been and Xavier wouldn't have had a mate.”
“Not that he cares about his mate. Do you think you will live? Do you think he will spare you after finding his mate?”
“Xavier has always hated your father. And seeing that he has threatened him just a bit, he wouldn't keep them alive.”
“But he kept them safe now,” I fought back, trying hard to convince myself.
It looks like I was the one saying everything. Dropping a statement and attacking myself about it.
“No! He did that to confuse you. He did that to make you agree with his plan. Because he needed you. He desperately does.”
I was suddenly heating up. It looked like I was sitting so close to fire.
I opened my eyes suddenly, gasping for air as more words echoed in my ears.
My eyes widened almost immediately as I stared at the mess in front of me. I slowly surveyed my surroundings, shock taking the best of me.
Candles were standing in the air, around me, burning.
My heartbeat accelerated. Fear entered my features. I adjusted back suddenly.
The light on each candle went off and it dropped to the floor.
I was still heating up, and beads of perspiration started to tickle down my face.
What's happening to me? I looked down at myself. I'm naked. My gaze searched around. There were several of my clothes around, including Xavier's coat, which was resting on one of the chairs.
Then I remembered the marking. Xavier marked me yesterday.
Unconsciously, I reached for my neck.
Mirror! I need a mirror.
And suddenly, a small-sized mirror was in the air in front of me.
My heart nearly stopped beating.
I got out of bed, grabbed Xavier's coat, and ran out of the house. The breeze that met me cooled my body instantly.
But I was still shivering. I was still scared and couldn't quite put my mind to what had really happened.
How was I supposed to explain candles over my head? That wasn't even the only thing; the candle was lit, and it was making me heat up from my dream.
Witchcraft has to work somewhere.
And then, realization hits in. Have I forgotten so far?
That I'm not only going to be the silver wolf the world has ever known. I'm also a witch. My mother is a witch.
I put on the coat.
Even though my mind was searching for the answers, I couldn't quite comprehend them.
“Are you ok?” A deep voice asked suddenly.
It suddenly felt like the whole world stopped suddenly as a mint scent filled the air around me.
And I could literally feel my wolf dancing inside me.
What!
“Autumn,” that same deep voice called again.
I didn't respond. Maybe I was too scared, or I was shocked.
Has Xavier unlocked my wolf?
“Yes!” Riley muttered in reply.
I jerked backward, suddenly and missed my steps. I saw myself going down but that was the least of my concern.
But suddenly, I stopped as strong hands wrapped around me and steadied me.
I felt a rush of adrenaline. The mate bond was doing its stupid thing again.
I wriggled out of his hold and adjusted backward giving us a space in between.
“Are you alright?” He asked, with worries written all over him. “I heard you scream.”
Did I? I must have when I saw the candles.
Damn! I nearly thought someone was performing witchcraft on me.
My throat felt dry and patchy suddenly. I nodded instead.
“Are you sure?” He was suddenly standing so close. His hand reached for my head. I adjusted again but he placed his palm on my forehead nonetheless. “You are burning!” He noted darkly.
I nodded once. “But I'm fine.”
“No,” he protested and took me off the ground before I could say more.
My heartbeat increased and I hated it. The feeling of being vulnerable. I don't want to feel it again.
My mission is clear now. I'm not going to find Gwen. I am going to rescue my family, and my pack from Xavier. And I'm going to get my revenge when my wolf fully matures.
But that mission is so close now that my wolf has been unlocked. I will not let the mate bond get in the way this time like it has always done.
Xavier stopped in his tracks suddenly. “What the heck happened here?”
I looked around, at the shattered mirror and then the candles.
“I_” I started, even though I had no idea of what to say.
He walked over to the bed and gently placed me on it. He didn't say any words and instead started getting everywhere neat.
When he was done with that, he brought a wet napkin and placed it on my head.
But I started to feel better the moment I was back on the bed. I could feel the efficiency of my wolf. I needed no one to tell me she was active already.
He sat beside me on the bed and looked at me. “Will you have some cakes? Rick bought some from the palace.”
Rick. That reminds me.
“Rick is here?”
“No, but he's coming back soon. You should be fit to go back to the palace by then. I just hope you've healed up,” he muttered and reached forward again.
Why does he like doing that?
He pulled down the collar of the coat so that he was able to see the markings.
His eyes widened slightly. “You are healed?” He sounded shocked. “How?” He looked back at me.
I shrugged slightly, feigning ignorance. He must not know about my wolf now until it has fully matured.
He hesitated as if thinking about it. Then, he pulled back.
“Ok then, you will be going back to the palace this afternoon and I want us to discuss that.”
“Yes_” I responded without looking at him.
“Elixir must be convinced you are Gwen.”
I looked at him. “I failed the first time. How do you expect me to do it this time?”
He shrugged briefly and looked away as if in thought. “I'm sure you will find a way. Even from Elixir, you should have found out how Gwen truly is.”
“Why don't you tell me?”
He looked at me. “What?”
“You didn't believe what I told you about Gwen. Actually, I heard it from Elixir. If you don't believe that. How am I sure she's right about her behavior too?”
He held my gaze for a moment, clenched his teeth, and stood up.
“Gwen is strict. She punishes the maids for all offenses, no matter how small it is. She doesn't forgive. I've fired a lot of maids since we got married,” he explained.
So, Elixir was right about her.
“That's who she is. She will never stoop so low to do all that you've said about her,” he finished and walked out.
He looked angry. Well, not that I care.
