“Dylan!” I called, happily.
He smiled from where he stood. He had grown even older, or maybe it was because I haven't seen him for so long.
He was 6 feet tall and has always been taller than me, with a face that can only be identified as ‘handsome’.
Gosh, I've missed him so much. Without thinking, I rushed forward and ended up in his embrace. He hugged me back, patting my back slightly like he used to do.
He pulled back after some minutes. “How have you been? You look good actually, except a few cheeks are missing,” he joked and pulled at my cheeks playfully.
I laughed at this.
“We will get the maids to you tomorrow through Mercury,” Frederick said suddenly, pulling me back to look at him.
I nodded once. “Good. We have a new target on hand. I want you to monitor one of Xavier's Alphas so closely.”
“And who is that?”
“His name is Philip. I want you to report everything he does and everyone he meets to me.”
“We will do that,” he responded, bowed slightly with the rest of the Alpha and walked away, leaving me alone with Dylan.
“I thought you were dead,” Drey said suddenly.
“I thought the same of you until I saw Aunt June recently. I'm so happy you're fine,” I said honestly, a smile still playing on my face.
“We have a lot to catch up with. It feels like I've missed years with you.”
I and Dylan were so close that I told him everything and vice versa. I know it will stop when he finds his mate, but that hasn't happened so far. My mother used to think we found our company good because neither of us had found their mate. We were hopeless then. Maybe we were truly lonely.
But I cherished our friendship.
“What have you been doing?” I asked him as we settled on the chairs in the hut.
“Nothing big. After we were taken, I was locked. Until recently, the Alpha decided to release us. I was forced to join the guards. And that's what I have been doing. Nothing special, just a daily routine.”
While my life has been ups and downs.
“I had lost hope actually,” he muttered suddenly.
I looked at him for a moment. “We are getting out of here, I promise.”
He looked at me and smiled softly. “Mum said you have a plan.”
I nodded once. “I do.”
"Good, because I can't wait to be out of here.”
I smiled again.
He sighed and looked away.
Silence descended on us.
Though it wasn't like us not to have something to say. As far as I'm concerned, Dylan has a lot to say, but maybe he doesn't know how to start.
“You should return to your room,” he said suddenly, shocking me. It suddenly felt like he was avoiding conversation concerning my mate. There's no way Aunt June wouldn't have told him about Xavier.
Or maybe he's waiting for me to bring it up.
I looked away. “I've found my mate.”
“Mum told me,” he said softly, like it wasn't a big deal. “I didn't think you would find a mate before me though,” he added quickly, teasingly.
I found myself laughing.
I sighed almost immediately. I was sober.
“But you are not having a fate like mine. Your mate isn't your enemy.”
“You shouldn't be so sure. I haven't found her yet.”
I smiled again and looked up at him. He wasn't looking at me. He has this distant look on his face. I wonder what he's thinking of.
“Are you really going to kill the Alpha King?”
I nodded once. “I have no choice.”
“Of course you do,” he said and looked at me, locking my gaze for a moment. “You shouldn't be the one to kill your mate.”
I swallowed hard on the pain. “It's my fate.”
He shook his head briefly. “No one should be allowed to bear such fate. You are going to reject your mate; you shouldn't be the one to kill him. It will be too much for you to handle.”
He's right. I haven't thought of the aftermath.
I sucked hard. “It has to be done, Dylan. It's the only option. I have none. If anyone will kill the Alpha, it has to be me. No one is powerful enough to face him. Only my silver wolf will be strong enough to face him,” I explained, hoping he would understand.
He stared at me but didn't say anything in response.
“Do you understand?” I helplessly demanded.
He tried to smile but failed. “I understand. You should return now.”
I nodded once and stood. “I will see you some other time then.”
He didn't stand up, even as I walked out of the hut.
I moved inside the hallway quickly and released a sigh. I stopped suddenly when I saw Mercury walking towards me.
“Autumn,” she called, with worries written all over her. “The King has lost consciousness.“
What!
My heart made a sudden thud in my chest.
Before I could even register what was happening, I realised I was racing towards Xavier's room.
There were more guards standing guard in front of Xavier's room, and my heart skipped a beat at this. Was Xavier dead?
I didn't even let Mercury finish what she was saying.
But I was in front of Xavier's room now. I should find the answer on my own.
The guards moved aside for me but blocked the way as Mercury rushed to follow me inside.
I stepped inside the bedroom and saw Xavier lying on the bed, lifelessly.
“Luna!” A thick voice reached my ears.
I looked up at Augustine and Philip. I lingered more on Philip until they were both out of the room.
“Is he dead?” I asked the moment they were out.
“He is still breathing if that's what you are asking,” Rick muttered.
I regarded Xavier for a moment. He looked cold and almost out of breath. What could have made the Alpha lose consciousness? “What happened?”
“I should be asking. Aren't you happy now that the Alpha's breathing is faint?” He said it sarcastically.
I was shocked beyond my bone marrow. I turned to look at him. “What are you implying?”
“Who will want to kill the king if not you?”
I scoffed at his accusation. The fact that I'm here worrying about someone who I am going to kill is actually very funny.
And now I'm accused again of something I didn't do.
Autumn! Think right!
“Tell me,” I started suddenly. “What would you have done if you were in my shoes?” I was suddenly angry. “If you were the one accused wrongly and punished for what you didn't do.”
He stared but didn't say anything. So, I continued.
“If I try to murder the king, I'm not wrong because I have the right to. Xavier deserves it! You and him took my pack members after killing half of them, and now we are forced to stay here over what we didn't even do!” I snapped at him.
“Then why do you pretend you care?”
“Because Xavier isn't supposed to die now. To everyone, I'm still Gwen. If he dies now, what will happen to me? Xavier has to be alive till he finds Gwen.”
Rick huffed. “So, you do plan on getting revenge?”
I regarded him for a moment. “You think I won't?” I laughed. “Keep living in Delulu." Everyone must pay for their sins. You and the Alpha will have to pay.”
RIck sighed. “He was poisoned.”
What!
“Poisoned?”
“Yes. We discovered this some days ago, actually. The doctor said he would be fine if he didn't take more of it,” he explained.
“That means he took it recently.”
Rick nodded once. “I've been keeping watch of his food and drinks, but I have no idea how this happened.”
I turned to look at Xavier, lying lifelessly on the bed. “Everyone in the kitchen should be arrested. They will be questioned.”
“What!”
“Arrest them!” I repeated.
