“Alright!” Rick responded and eventually walked out of the room. He probably didn't expect me to say that.
I found myself moving closer to Xavier.
I should be happy, actually, that Xavier was sick, but I'm not at all close to that. Is it because he's my mate?
Damn!! The stupid mate bond will keep getting in the way until I'm able to reject him.
But who could have poisoned him? Philip? Everything was happening so fast. Philip must be tired of playing the games and want to end it.
Then I'm not safe as well. If Xavier can be poisoned, then I'm the next. Or maybe I've been getting poisoned as well.
The thought of it made my heart skip a beat. If Philip really kidnapped Gwen, and the purpose was to get her out of the way. Then, I'm affecting him as well. He would be planning on getting me out of the way as well.
I really need to shift as fast as possible.
The door opened behind me, and I looked back to see who it was.
The man bowed slightly. “I'm the doctor, your majesty.”
I nodded once. “Do all you have to do.”
The man nodded once and moved closer to Xavier with liquid in a small cup. He tried to make Xavier drink it, but it slipped out of his mouth.
He glanced at me helplessly, then looked back at Xavier. Then he did it again and sighed.
“You have to take the drugs, your majesty, if you want to get well,” he panicked.
I released a sigh. I don't want to do this, but I seriously have to.
“Give it to me!”
He looked back at me with a confused look. “What did you say, my Queen?”
“You want him to drink it, right? I will make sure he does.”
The doctor nodded once and handed the cup over to me. I moved closer to Xavier before I poured the content in my mouth, then proceeded to kiss Xavier, thereby pouring the content in his mouth.
I did it twice before I eventually backed away.
The door opened again, and this time, it was Rick that walked inside.
“All the maids have been imprisoned,” he announced.
I nodded once. “We will fish out who has poisoned the king by interrogating them.”
“And has the Alpha responded?”
The doctor released a sigh, and I'm forced to look at him.
“I'm sorry,” he said softly.
“What do you mean by'sorry?”
“Yes, what's happening?”
“The Alpha isn't responding to the drug I gave him. At this point, we can only save him using the correct remedy.”
“Then find the correct remedy and save the king!” I said with urgency my words.
The doctor went quiet for what seemed like an eternity. “We can't get it.”
“Why not?”
“Because only the witches have the antidote,” Rick said suddenly. “And the herbs could have been destroyed years back when Xavier's father massacred the witches,” he explained.
“So, it's a poison common to the witches?”
“Yes.”
I felt something caught in my throat. Now I get why Rick suspected me at first.
“Without the antidote. How long does the Alpha have?”
The doctor looked at Rick, as if seeking permission from him. He looked at me again. “The king's father died 48 hours after he was like this. But he has to take the antidote between 24 hours, or he might not make it even if he later took the antidote. His wolf would be too weak to handle the process,” he explained.
I felt confused for a moment.
“Are you saying Xavier's father was killed with the same poison?”
He nodded once.
What!
I looked up at Rick, then back at the doctor again. “And now, the King has just 24 hours to live?”
He hesitated briefly, then nodded slowly.
What!
My parents didn't tell me this. They didn't tell me anything about the poison. Could they have poisoned Xavier?
My breathing was coming out hard. But would they do something without informing me?
“You are dismissed,” I heard Rick say, even though it sounded so far away.
The doctor bowed slightly and walked out of the room.
“Autumn, i_” Rick started suddenly.
I stood and looked up at him. “What are you about to say? You think I used the poison on him?”
He sighed. “I know you didn't. But I need to tell you this,” he muttered.
His expression was blank, and I couldn't really read it.
“Gather your people and leave tonight. If the Alpha really dies, you will be the next one to be targeted, especially since you aren't Gwen. Whoever poisoned Xavier must know you aren't Gwen.”
I sucked in breath. Everything was happening so suddenly. And it made my head reel. A serious headache has suddenly set in, and it was affecting my whole system.
“So, you are going to let the Alpha die?”
He regarded me for a moment. “I didn't say I was going to give up on the Alpha. I'm going to leave now, and I'm going to look for the antidote. Until it's the end, I won't give up.”
I closed my eyes for a moment, then reopened. “Why are you letting me go?”
“I'm not letting you go, Autumn,” he said between clenched teeth. It was as if he was being forced. “This is Xavier's promise to you. I'm only fulfilling that.”
My heart was beating faster now. I couldn't think clearly as I exited Xavier's room.
I hesitated in front of the door, thinking over and over what Rick had told me.
This was to my advantage, wasn't it? I wanted Xavier dead, and now he's about to die. He's going to die without me killing him.
But as much as I wanted it, why am I feeling restless? Why am I so sad about it?
My heart suddenly felt heavy as I walked back to my room.
“Is everything OK with the Alpha?” Mercury asked the moment we were inside the room.
I collapsed on the bed and slowly shook my head. “The Alpha has 24 hours to live.”
“You seem sad. Isn't that what you want?”
I closed my eyes again. It's truly what I want. But maybe I would feel better if I had rejected him before now.
How could I survive my mate dying like this? The thought alone is killing me.
But I have to do what I have to do.
I opened my eyes and looked at Mercury. “Get a word to the elders. Tell them to get everyone ready. We are leaving tonight.”
Mercury nodded once, bowed slightly, and stepped out.
This is for the best; Xavier needs to die for us to live. My feelings don't matter in this.
Do you also think Xavier deserves to die?
