I got up suddenly, my legs moving on their own accord. At first, I didn't know where I was going. Then, I remembered that I needed to let my parents know that we are leaving tonight. I also wanted to ask them if they poisoned the king. If the first poisoning was done by them, then it could be them this time around too.
They should get prepared as well. We will be free tonight.
I stopped once and confirmed no one was following me before I changed direction.
My mind was still clouded. I know I should be straight, but I can't stop thinking about it.
“Mom!” I called the moment she opened the door, and I ended up in her arms. I think I really need it.
My mom patted me lightly. “Is everything alright?”
I pulled back to look at her. Then, I slowly shook my head.
My father walked out and moved closer to us. “Is everything alright?”
I sucked in breath and tried to think of how best it was to phrase the question. I released a sigh of frustration and looked up at my mother again.
“Did you poison the king?”
My mother's eyes widened with shock. “What?”
I read her expression quickly and got the answer I wasn't expecting. “Don't tell me it wasn't you.”
“Did someone poison the king?”
I nodded once. “The King is on the brink of death. He will die in less than 24 hours.”
My heart ached at the realisation.
My parents exchanged gazes.
My mom released a sigh. “Does he think we are responsible?”
“Well, the King is unconscious. So, no one is accusing us.”
My father turned away, “Who could have poisoned him?”
“My thoughts exactly. I actually thought it was you guys. And the doctor said it was the same poison that was used to kill the King's father.”
My father looked up at me. “Someone is targeting the Alpha. It must be someone that has been in the kingdom during the days of the King’s father,” he suggested.
That makes sense. Well, Philip ruled with Xavier’s father.
“So, what happens to us when the King dies?”
I regarded my father for a moment. My heart felt heavy again, but I knew I had to make the decision. “We will leave tonight!” I decided.
My father watched me for another moment, as if reading my thoughts. “Is that truly what you've decided?”
I nodded once. “My wolf is getting stronger day by day. I will be able to protect the pack,” I explained.
He sighed. “Alright, I will get prepared,“ he muttered and walked inside.
My hands started to shake on their own. I can't believe I'm panicking!
“Autumn,” my mom called softly, pulling me out of the void I almost pushed myself to.
I looked at her and said, "Yes, mom.”
She reached out to me and took my hands in hers. She massaged it slightly. “Do you want to save the Alpha?”
“Well, there's nothing to do. The antidote is no more.”
“If!” She stressed suddenly. “If the herbs still exist, will you save him?”
I thought hard about it. “He doesn't deserve to be alive. He has to die for us to be free.”
“But he already freed us.”
I went quiet for a moment. If Rick hadn't told me to leave, that it was Xavier’s promise, I would have called him a liar. I would have said he would kill us after he finds Gwen. But that doesn't seem like the case.
“He has,” I whispered.
“And what does your heart truly want?”
I sucked in breath as I stared at my mother. I didn't need to think about it deeply. I know what my heart wants.
“Tell me, Autumn,” my mother probed in.
I released a sigh. “I want to save the king and then leave. But he deserves to die.”
She seemed pleased with the response I gave her. A smile curled up at the tip of her mouth.
“Then we can do that. We can go with what your heart says.”
I started to shake my head. “He deserves to die for all he has done to us. This is my chance to kill him. It feels like I'm being weak.”
Her gaze was unwavering. “Is that what you think?”
I released another sigh, maybe for the umpteenth time that day.
“I want to reject him and kill him. But letting him die will mean I evaded the prophecy. I mean, its a chance to let him die without me killing him,” I said in a determined voice as if to convince my mother, but it felt like I was merely trying to convince myself.
The Alpha has to die. It doesn't matter how.
My mom shook her head briefly. “Just because we have our fate sealed already doesn't mean we deserve it. But I will go with whatever you say. I just want you to know that you are wise. Whatever decision you make, it will be the best,” she finished. She let go of my hands and smiled softly. “I will go and pack then.”
Just because we have our fate sealed already doesn't mean we deserve it.
But my fate is to kill Xavier, and not him dying like this.
“Mum!” I called suddenly before she would walk out.
She stopped immediately to look at me. “Yes?”
“If there's any way I can save the Alpha now, I will.”
She smiled. “I have the herbs in my vases. I took some with me when I left, and I have made a lot out of it,” she explained.
My eyes widened with shock. “Those flowers you cherished?”
“Yes,” she nodded once. “It's the herbs that the king needs.”
I closed my eyes as I thought of what I was about to say. When I reopened it, I was determined.
“Wait for me. I will be back soon. When I give them the herbs, we will leave,” I assured and started out of the room.
Just before I turned, I saw my mother's happy face. If I'm not wrong, she doesn't even want the king to die. But he has to. It's just not now. And it's not going to be like this.
